Starting with a good premise and going with the flow of popularity but not coming up with a way to end it satisfactory with all the time they had. A lot of manga suffer from this. Shonen is one of the big ones that falls into this trap. A good writer should plan their ending or have a general idea of the message they wanted to convey when it ends. If they get popular, they can add more character development and change the ending a little to fit better with the changes that haven't before that. Better to end short with a good ending, instead of drawn out with a terrible ending.
