This guy makes some of the most divided fans. While it's cool right now to hate him because of Crybaby, let's have a proper discussion on his works. Do you hate him or love him?

I don't really like how westerners discuss "star" creators. It's either worship or revilement. That said, out of what I've seen, I love The Tatami Galaxy and Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome, they have great atmosphere and visuals. I enjoyed Crybaby as I watched it but in retrospect I don't feel it does the original work justice. It also clings to it too hard to be seen as another thing entirely.

I have really enjoyed everything of Yuasa's that I have watched. Tatami Galaxy is great and I enjoyed Devilman Crybaby too, even if it fell apart a bit in the second half. I can see why OP would call him divisive though, since I think a lot of people could look at this works as pretentious. In any case Yuasa seems to create excellent visuals and atmosphere in his shows. They are artistic treats to watch.

I recently watched Kaiba for the first time and it was terrific. I really really loved it. Kind of surprised I don't hear people talk about it more often, but I guess it gets overshadowed by Yuasa's other works. Looking forward to working through his older stuff.

One of my favorites for sure.

I don't think I've watched anything of his that I didn't at least enjoy watching. Crybaby was a bit disappointing compared to what I expected but it wasn't bad overall.

Kaiba, Kemonozume, Ping Pong, and Tatami Galaxy are all favorites of mine. The episode he directed of Space Dandy was one of the best episodes of the whole series if not the best. I look forward to anything he's worked on.

Kaiba is easily my favorite of his though. Of all of his surrealist approaches to story telling Kaiba is the most convincing. I started watching the series in a chair. After about 5 episodes I found myself lying on the ground turning the music up all the way while I drifted away into a lucid dream about giving up my life to lay in the sunlight until I dehydrated and died. It fucked me up man.

The pretension criticism is one I've seen with Tatami Galaxy. I think it comes when people sees the visuals and the style of the show and it makes them feel that the story is trying to seem more philosophical and smarter than what it really is.

Didn't this author do the Wakfu lore short about Nox?

I don't understand Kaiba's ending yet. Is everyone brainless now as Kaiba's plant ate everything and exploded?

Yeah. It's really just Yuasa's style to do interesting things with animation.

Love him. He's a great animator that thinks outside the box. One of my biggest draws to anime is seeing just that, amazing visuals that are unique from the rest. People tend to mention his newer work but my first exposure to his work was his 2004 film Mind Game during an acid trip, I was instantly hooked and wanted to see more. Kaiba and Tatami Galaxy were great, I enjoyed the hell out of TNISWOG. Crybaby was a letdown when it comes to it's story but visually it was very satisfying. He's a fantastic animator and offers up a style no one else in the industry is replicating at the moment, one that has clear demand if people are willing to pay for a 10 min short through kickstarter.

>why does no one talk about kaiba?

Why don't you start a thread about it?

Wut are you talking about nigga. Everybody watched it with low expectations cause Netflix and it was a pleasant surprise, especially considering the low budget and short time it was made in. Did some weeb youtuber contrarian start shitting on it now or something?

No, from what I know all gay youtubers like it, making shit newfag anons want to be contrarian and shit on it at every opportunity.

Personally, I'm with you. I thought it was neat, but really it's a sequel to the manga which you should have already read at this point, Devilman being the highest selling manga ever. The whole contrarian attitude stems from being salty that the full Devilman story was never adapted to anime until now but Crybaby is really a sequel. Faggy youtubers and normalfags have never known the full story and so now that the whole thing was told (on Netflix and not through a manga they have to put in effort to read), they hail Crybaby as some sort of masterpiece like cattle. And like more cattle, some anons have to shit on it to stick it to the "mainstream".

I remember way back when, The Devilman OVA was being shit on by faggy youtubers who never read the manga so they didn't know what the fuck was happening.

Or the fags who shit on it are the "All new anime is shit" crowd who just wanted to go back in time and fund the rest of the OVA. Pic related.
