Let's have a thread about the most retarded and lovely WSJ manga before it gets cancelled for being too european.

The premise is that Michelangelo's David, along with other works of art like Botticelli's Venus, the Mona Lisa and the Manneken Pis are Japanese high school students. Venus is the class' pretty girl and David, despite looking like the ideal of masculinity, is an awkward dipshit. The manga frequently features a spoof of a famous paiting or sculpture. It also features girls headpatting girls.

Gonna be a sad day when it gets culled for more generic shonen or isekai shit.

It's such a silly series, but I enjoy that things often turn out alright for David. He keeps doing dumb shit, but it pays off in the end, instead of being cringe comedy.

 No.882592

>>882471

Despite the silly premise, it's fairly clear the author has a lot of respect for Renaissance art. Bringing ridicule to all these highly dignified characters is a juxtaposition for comedic effect, but the manga takes great care to never go into straight mocking territory. In the end, all the antics so far are endearing and never cringeworthy, even Goliath is likeable. You can tell the mangaka is having a blast doing this.

The new chapter really took a turn.

I do like that, of all the pieces of art that have been adapted for this series, this is the one that makes the mangaka say "Fuck it, I give up. I'm just scanning this one in."

It's actually great how David, by meeting friends, is growing out of his immature horny teenager phase in a subtle manner. He is still an awkward nerd, but he has a sheer earnestness that shines through. He's already manlier than most romcom manga protagonists by chapter 13.

Also I find it funny how you can immediately tell a statue is exposed at the Louvre thanks to the lighting an the walls.

I had the same thought the other day. It could be used as complement to some other multimedia work like an anime for example, to some effect, but not as a standalone work of art.

 No.891234

Ehhh to be fair there usually aren't any art in jokes other than "name drop painting/sculpture." Art in jokes would be an old Greek statue going from colored to colorless or David's mom being Vittoria Colonna rather than Athena without being name dropped stuff like that that isn't overtly apparent.

 No.895683

>>891007

The nice thing about the art references is that they are plainly stated. They're not in-jokes only art enthusiasts get, it's more "hey, like that artstyle ? Check the original out".

>Le Sommeil (translated in English variously as The Sleepers and Sleep) is an erotic[1] oil painting on canvas by French artist Gustave Courbet[2] created in 1866.[3] The painting, which depicts lesbianism, is also known as the Two Friends (Les Deux Amies) and Indolence and Lust (Paresse et Luxure).

>The painting shows two naked women lying asleep on a bed entwined in an erotic embrace, resting after sexual intercourse.[2]

Poor David. He was barking up the wrong trees the whole time.

Finally a new chapter, in which spooky urban legends are bullied by bakas and bakas are bullied by moths, and Redon shows up again.

 No.901693

>>900242

This chapter made me curious, if this is a reference to the Mary of Japanese urban legend, shouldn't it be translated as 'It's Mary'/'This is Mary'? I'd need to check the raws to confirm that it wasn't specifically written as 'I am Mary' though. I mean unless other people start their phone calls with "I am anon. Please return my onahole already Steve you sad you'd bring it back Monday" and I'm the weirdo that would use it's/this is.

Generally the translation is really on point so I'm inclined to trust them but this seems like a pretty big oversight for a simple thing.
