>It just makes me think that Showa idols are superior to the group idols nowadays.
I don't know a lot about idols and I prefer Showa ones that new ones, but this isn't a simple question. In Showa era the media as heavy centralized. It means you would have a few options with a high-value product on those options. They choose the "best ones" to turn them on idols. They are right way be an idol, a big and bright star.
This new generation comes from a decentralized model. They don't have the money or the support to become great was the Showa era idols but they are the "my way" to be an idol. They are n't big or hadn't long lifespan as the older stars but they nearly of public as our sun is near to their public. Their objective isn't to bring a smile for a whole generation but to put a smile in face of niche public.

As was predicted in the Dead Sea Scrolls. She's also Misato.
It's a nice full circle. She's the one who started the thing where seiyuu act as idols during Sailor Moon. Toei and their managers didn't like it when they did stuff like this and tried to convince them not to. They weren't allowed to use the name "Sailor Moon" in their name so they went as "Peach Hips" and put on shows for their fans during Christmas and such, against the will of the producers. It ended up doing so well that anime studios started to see the profits and now they push all seiyuu out to act like idols anytime there's a sufficiently popular anime. Kotono just wanted to take a break from regular work have fun with the Sailor Moon fans.

"Idol Wars", called "Idol Sengoku Jidai" in Japan, are a thing happening right now. It started in 2010 with the beginning of the Tokyo Idol Festival and it's helped propel and form several idol units through the years.

All of our many idol anime since 2010 are a product of it. It's really just a meme used to try to keep idols in a boom period, and it's worked surprisingly well. Love Live and the whole idol anime genre owes it all to this meme used to promote the Tokyo Idol Festival, as well as many idol units, seiyuu promotional events, and so on.
An actual Idol War anime would be nice, but the "Idol Sengoku Jidai" in anime is common. Love Live is the perfect example, with the whole competition idea and what it became in Sunshine. Then there's WUG, which showed the whole thing to us up and close.

She's the kind of cool woman character I really like. She's calm and somewhat aloof, like when she needs to have a smoke alone, she has admitted to accept things as they are even if she's in a completely different world compared to the other girls, but she has a truly caring warm side, more obvious with Lilly in this last episode. And there's certainly something comedic about her still acting like an oiran during these events, first the shamisen and now this.
I'd be a bit bummed if she broke down in her focus episode, I'd prefer it if she did remember and died a traumatic death, but she remained as calm as ever. ``A powerful politician had me beheaded. It sucks but these were very violent times, not much I could do about it.``, and just asks to have a smoke alone. I hope she has a descendant or something to that effect.

This whole episode was spectacular. Manager gave a great idol talk to Junko. Somehow I was reminded of mganon in this scene. Truck-kun returns, Lilys heart, and Tae being Tae were excellent humor to quell the drama. Anons were posting about dying by lighting strike on stage as being metal, but getting hit by lighting, not burning to a crisp, getting autotuned voices (excellent usage of autotune), finger lasers, and a nice glow is far more metal. Ive never been so entertained by a non-typical idol anime. Given the Junko art posted, she seems to have sealed the deal for most popular in Japan.

I wrote a post expressing something similar before, but the automod fucked my shit up. Here's a take 2.
I was also let down somewhat by this episode, it's not even that I dislike idol performances, but the drama as you say is dull.
It's hard to take it seriously when they switch back and forth every episode between parodying idol shows and trying to get real.
And the CGI was pretty bad like episode 3. It's disappointing that they can afford to give Iron Frill nice 2D animation, but not Franchouchou.
I also think it's criminal how little screen time is given to Yuugiri and Lily. Their dynamic shines and they are crying out for more attention.
We just crossed the halfway point, so there is still plenty of time left for them to right these wrongs. I'm holding out hope.
