The newest chapter of One Piece just dropped and the goal of this arc has been laid out. After coming through an arc where the crew failed to assassinate Big Mom and only succeeded in pissing her off, they now plan to assassinate the unkillable Kaidou. Historical and literature references are cast about with such speed that some scanlators are writing up extra pages just to help give more context.

It feels way too forced. An entire two page spread of the strawhats being humored and then moved to tears by Cuckden's story that we haven't even heard. But that's not all, even Whitebeard and Roger were Cuckden fanboys. Clearly Wano was barely isolated if both Whitebeard and Roger were so familiar with just a daimyo. We're supposed to sympathize with Cuckden to such an extent that he made the most remarkable figures of the pirate world sympathize with him too. Wano is a geographically isolated country but also a self-sufficient one. It had plenty of renewable resources so isolationism wasn't a bad thing for them, specially in a world where the world goverment/marine is corrupted to the core and violent pirates roam the seas. The current state of Wano isn't shit because their borders are closed but because the high treason from the country's government (selling their nation to Kaidou) turned Wano into Venezuela.
Open borders wouldn't have helped shit. Even if they had communications with the outside world, the marines wouldn't have moved an inch to help them. When it comes to the yonkou, nor the marines nor other countries will lend a hand. Dessrosa (under Kaidou) and Ryugu kingdom (under Big Mom) are proof of it.
>It used to be that Oda didn't whip out the crying faces unless they were actually necessary.
Yeah, usually Oda would put a flashback to make one care about the character before killing him off. But here Kinemon just says "he was punk but good-willed, reformed a bunch of criminals and everybody loved him but he got kill" and the waterworks start flowing.

Isolationist doesn't mean it is impossible to visit. Big surprise that PIRATES would break the rules and go where they want and make friends with a rowdy guy who shared their style of doing things.

Exaggerated reactions yes, serious crying faces were reserved for powerful scenes like Ace's death, Robin coming to terms that she wants to be with the strawhats, and so on. They were moments that the strawhats were experiencing in a very direct and intimate manner. I don't remember Luffy being this outwardly outraged even when Vivi told him the backstory of Alabasta.

So it's real life but stuck in a mixed bag of technology from 1300 to 1800 in such a way that anything enjoyable from that era is gone. No shit everyone's going to have a tragic backstory everyone in this timeline does so One Piece would just take it to the next level.

I've read the entire anti one piece thread on 5ch, and honestly it was surprising. I've never seen that much hate for it concentrated in one place before in the West.
They call the fans believers and call them a cult, call Oda "汚駄", they call one piece Chon piece(which is literally "Gook piece") because Oda talked about liking Korea before. I even saw some guy calling him honorary Korean(名誉朝鮮人). Though most of the complaints are about him being a hack who can't write shit.
Some of the hate feels somewhat excessive, but they have comments by Oda in the thread from interviews that I have never read translated before and Oda really is an arrogant piece of shit with autist level social awareness at times.
The thread has like 700 comments with heated discussion at points so I can't just talk about every fault of one piece here, but even though I didn't care about it that much before I now want one piece to just end as soon as possible and fuck off.

1) Oda is a huge autist. It's the only reason he's able to contain the entire clusterfuck plot of One Piece's entire world in his head.
2) He's insanely successful and One Piece is Japan's unofficial religion, on top of him working on the damned thing for over 20 years with fewer breaks and missed chapters than every other author in his weight class. He can have an ego. He's earned it.

But nice post faggot, it's not like I had a 180 change in my opinions. I had stopped caring much about the story after the time skip anyways, lately he's been especially annoying with the open border crap so I went to the anti thread when I saw it on the board.

1)I meant autistic as in socially, like sending an awkwardly cheerful support message to a city hit by a natural disaster, talking about how he can't go to the funerals of people he likes and how it was good that he met them before they died, or insulting a WW2 vet in volume 89 and having shuueisha apologize for his thoughtless comments.
2)On this point I think Japanese people make an interesting comment that we can't relate or care about.
A shounen series going for 20-30 years is not a good or admirable thing at all. Shounen series are better for readers when it starts and ends when they are young, Oda aims for 15yo range but someone who started reading at that time could have a kid in school reading one piece now with no end in sight. Salaryman buying jump just to read their childhood manga and then throwing it in the thrash might make money though.
Right now with Gintama gone apparently there're no 2000s manga in weekly jump while there are 2 series left from 90s, HxH and one piece.
Now I don't really think a series going over 1000 chapters is a bad thing, and Jojo for example has done it well by refreshing the story every few years. But personally I feel like OP is a slugfest that's unnecessarily complicated. Dressrosa was just an Alabasta 2 that took 2 years to finish, and we have too many fucking plot lines hanging, weevil, reverie, BB's attack on revolutionaries and their attack on reverie, smokers visit to vegapunk that's been fucking forgotten since punk hazard. I have a feeling that Oda will die before this shit even finishes, he's a fat chainsmoker with deteriorating vision.
3)Don't say that, the only reason you don't care is because you can't read shit.

I believe in Oda because in the past he has satisfyingly concluded plot threads that were hinted at, like Mantra eventually becoming Observation Haki, Big Mom and her kingdom, Fishman Island, Blackbeard's ascent from scheming deckhand to yonko, the growing importance of the Supernova.
The reason the story keeps getting longer is he keeps having new ideas. It was initially going to end with the Shichibukai, but then he came up with stronger enemies and wanted to expand on them.

Weevil will probably make an appearance either now in Wano or down the line in Black Beard's territory.
The reverie will probably end with the WG hearing about Kaido having the absolute shit slammed out of him and Luffy's harem cumming in their dresses or an even better ending Kaido goes batshit insane knowing Wano has been liberated, and the Straw Hats are a legitimate threat, absolutely assmad he could get btfo now he books it to the reverie, right as it ends, Dragon declares war on the WG, and CP0 probably steps in, Kaido slams in there, and the Straw Hats have to stop him there.
Vegapunk will probably be revealed when One Piece is around 75% done.

It could still be anything. One of Kaido's titles is "thousand beasts" so for all we know he could have a thousand zoan forms, or it could just refer to his army, or he could have some magic fruit that gives him a dragon form or any number of other things. Most simple explanation is that he has a mythical dragon zoan fruit but as Momo demonstrates there are multiple dragon zoan fruit. I'm not ready to rule anything out yet, but I think what Oda has shown us is that Zoans are all like wolverine so to speak and the stronger your will the better you are at it. The awakened guards in Impel Down all healed quickly after defeat. Jack's entire theme so far is getting the utter shit kicked out of him but then emerging unscathed. I mean of all his fights so far he only won two, one through poisoning the Minks and one after initially getting sliced up by a random bandit samurai. His other battles were crushing defeats. I'm betting Kaido has a similar deal where he simply recovers too quickly to defeat. In rpg terms, imagine an enemy with max defense that regenerates more damage than you can deal.

The unifying power of the Zoan DFs are that they allow the user to transform and drastically alter their bodies. Drastically altering skin and bone and generating complex new muscle structures in a matter of seconds is a power that is dramatically understated in One Piece. Chopper proves that with the right conditions and training, a zoan is no longer even restricted to the 3 states that are typical of basic Zoan powers. This draws a clear line to awakened Zoans having insane durability, strength, and recovery potential, but Chopper's "points" seem to hint that more complex transformations are possible.
Chances are, "Thousand Beast Kaidou" is a title that may refer to his army of freaks. However, I'm wildly guessing, with little evidence, that Kaidou possesses some ancient, mythical Zoan DF which he mastered to such an extent that he can transform into nearly any animal. Furthermore, his mastery of Zoan powers has led to him becoming immortal because his body has become able to reflexively adapt and rapidly heal even when he doesn't want to. This may mean that his fascination with creating a zoan army could be based in trying to find a means to overcome this flaw in his power. Getting bored and wanting to start a new world war is just plan B if Kaidou can't figure out a way to kill himself.

In general the image feels really flat and lifeless for some reason though, like this was something an editor insisted on or something. He's drawn way better all female spreads.
And Perona's not with Moriah anymore, she seems content to stay on Mihawk's island. Absalom also left the crew to be a photographer, he takes the wanted pictures now.
My personal theory is that Moriah stole Whitebeard's shadow and put it into that guy claiming to be his son. From what we know of him he imitates his fighting style but without the fruit, he's as dumb as a zombie and his body is covered in surgical scars.

Check out the movie Silence. It deals with how harshly Japan dealt with Christian missionaries at one point. Even if you're an atheist (unless you're the edgy kind) it is a brutal slog to watch what they did to those people. There's a scene where the Japanese governer or whatever gives the lead Catholic priest this speech about how if they allow one religion in all the others would show to fight over the country, and they had to be made an example.
I don't think it's so much an open borders thing since at the end of the day Kaido and his crew are still foreign invaders who killed their royalty. Also we know opening up Wano will have negative consequences.

How can Luffy beat Don Krieg? The ship is sinking, his weapons puncture Luffy's skin and he's spreading poison everywhere!
How can Luffy possibly beat Crocodile? He's literally untouchable can drain all his moisture and has a million incredibly powerful techniques.
How's he going to even touch Enel? He can see the future, teleport instantaneously and phase through everything.
How can they even stand a chance against CP9? They're completely outclassed and they just called in a buster call!

"Open borders" is referencing Japan being forced to open its borders to the West and developing out of a feudal society. That's the clear parallel here. Clearly "open borders" in that context was beneficial, so I don't think it means literally zero immigration control like the term is used in the West. Literally zero contact with outsiders let alone immigration would cause stagnation if you're feudal and everyone else has much better tech and economics.
On the flip side, if you invite in the wrong immigrants they can destroy your society, or if you invite in too many, you get more downside than upside, so it's very much about who you are opening the borders to, when and why, and not just whether or not it's "open". Open borders is a retarded idea taken literally, but I assume even though Oda probably doesn't mean it that way, he's still implicitly a leftist like 90% of all artists to pull a number out of my ass, but if you're enjoying escapist fiction, expect humanitarian idealism about how people just need to be freed from outside oppression like the state, nation, and capitalism, and then everyone will suddenly get along. For all its complex seeming world building, One Piece is still a story about punching the baddies in the face to free the noble masses.

Welp. So much for this arc being the one where Luffy is a little better at being responsible. I'm curious to see where they're going with this, though.. Because they didn't really address what happened to everyone who was hiding in Oden Castle when Kaidou nuked it. I think Luffy might stun the whole fucking country by KO'ing Drunk Kaidou, but it's hard to see how they are going to get back on track with the plan unless they can all scatter and regroup again. Most likely Shutenmaru is going to take the Strawhats and Kinemon's crew to his hideout.
No.873997
It would have been better if it didn't end like this, in my opinion. It gives off a totally wrong idea. Luffy's Elephant Gun shouldn't even register with Kaido, same as how Big Mom felt nothing from the same attack, or how Doflamingo blocked an Elephant Gun with one hand. Next chapter is probably going to show how Kaido isn't damaged at all and that'll be fine, but this last page went way too hard trying to hype Luffy up and it gave the wrong impression. I want Luffy to get captured, meet up with Kidd that way, and get a viewpoint from inside Kaido's stronghold.

Virgo has shown more raw fortitude than Kaido at this point, the only difference being that Virgo could get damaged and killed. I don't even know what would've happened if it had been Law cutting up Kaido instead of Luffy, because it doesn't matter if he can't die if he can't move his separated limbs, and if he gets slammed by a simple Elephant Gun then he shouldn't be able to block Law's devil fruit power either.

You're all ignoring the fact that Kaido didn't even have haki up, during the pummeling. He wasn't defending in the slightest, against the elephant gun, and all that happened was he got moved downward. If you need to have this explained, it's like if Kaido was in his human form, standing there, and got slammed by an elephant gun with Kaido not defending in the slightest. The momentum of Luffy's fist would shove him back, in that case, but not hurt him.
What happened is essentially an aerial version of the "anime skidback" thing, where a character gets slammed and then goes skidding back, only not even nearly as dramatic a reaction from Kaido. Think of like, firing a maximum caliber bullet, at some literally unbreakable cube of the hardest material imaginable.
The bullet would get crumpled and bounce off, but the force would be imparted on the cube. Now under anime logic, the cube would skid back a bit, but that's it.

To put it simply. Kaido has high HP, Attack, Defence, Special Attack, Special Defence, Speed. His favourite flavour is sour and he hates spicy food. He can be used as a staller, but his form change ability allows him to become a sweeper, so it's really down to the moves he's packing. You want to hit him with a move that'll cause constant damage or immobilise him. Personally I'd go for a burn/toxic inflict on him. Burn because if he's anything like most Big Mom builds, he'll be packing Sleep Talk and still hitting at full power. If you're going to run toxic, then you'll want to switch a wall of your own in as the poison takes effect. One on one, Kaido wins. Fortunately, Kaido teams can't give him much more support than he gives himself, so you've only got to build your strategy around him and quickly wipe the other fighters that get in the way.
I'm hoping he'll get banned from tourney play soon though, him and Big Mom are ruining the game. At least Big Moms have to pack leftovers if they want to keep the pain train running. Kaido can basically hold anything and have no problems. Fucking Gamefreak.

I think he's the closest person to the ideal of the Pirate King right now. He just does what he wants and enables his underlings to do what they want, as long as they have enough power to do it.

Luffy really does need to try harder to look like a pirate. Blackbeard's on his island surrounded by his allies, soldiers and women and has a cool as fuck beard and outfit. Meanwhile Luffy's running around with his musty old hat and sitting next to Kidd after both of them received near instant shit slappery.
I almost want Blackbeard to win with how god damn great he looks. He went from being some bum in a bandana, getting his giant ship wrecked in a storm to living the Yonkou life.

Sanji wants the clear fruit and Absalom is his villain so its fitting he fights him. My guess is that Burges gets the diamond fruit and Zorro fights him so they can finish the whole "now go cut diamond now" thing they set up in Alabasta. We always expect Zorro to fight the swordsman and Sanji to fight the martial arts guy so its a good twist

He was like a tertiary/quaternary plot going on during Fishman island. He ended up getting his shit stomped by Tamago and Pekoms and then he got a small cover page arc where he eventually escaped Jinbei and got captured by X Drake and then, as we've discovered, imprisoned in Wano.

I enjoyed how inconsequential he was to the Strawhats. He was his own villain with how badly he kept fucking his own shit up. It'll be fun to see what his swamp fruit can do to help out here. Unless he goes full Kehihihi and tries to fuck with Luffy, Kaidou and everyone around him again.

I had to go look it up to remember, but he actually ended up as a Revolutionary Army general by accident, so he might even come back as a sort of ally to the Strawhats when the RA comes back and is actually seen doing things against.

Luffy has become so strong that wearing seastone cuffs only nullifies his devil fruit and no longer exhausts him. I wouldn't mind this arc having Luffy fight without his devil fruit for a while. It'd make for an interesting challenge.

I thought that was because of his darkness fruit and how it makes it so he can't be immune to damage like other fruit users but makes it so he can nullify their powers if he grabs onto them.

For what it's worth, Shanks let a shark bite off his arm, even though he is likely so powerful that he could have Haki punch'd the thing so hard or just flexed Conqueror's haki to make the creature flee before it ever threatened Luffy. Shanks is a weird dude. He does strange things for reasons we can't figure out and seems to have no goal of his own. Could be partially chalked up to Oda not knowing exactly what to do with the character, but there's kind of a trend of him letting himself get fucked up for dumb reasons.

>This. A lot of people forget, but Shanks supposedly got a stalemate with Kaido and forced Kaido to retreat without so much as a scratch.
Shanks is weird as fuck, the others let him do what the fuck he wants but he doesn't seem that powerful.
He might just has well talked Kaido down somehow (got him drunk?) than fight him.

I always assumed that was just Oda not knowing how far he'll powerscale the characters. I feel like he always wanted Shanks to be super important, that's why it was him giving the strawhat to Luffy, but back then he probably didn't know about all the haki powerups he'd have to add in order to maintain the feeling of power progression.

It got bitten off and then he told the Sea King to fuck off. It was weird from the outset. Maybe his arm got taken in the process of rescuing Luffy, like he snatched him from the jaws but couldn't get his arm out in time. That's always been how I've seen at least.
No.884047

The early ideas for Haki were there in the first chapter, but I don't know if Oda purposefully had Shanks give up an arm for a reason that would come off as really foolish, or if he just didn't have the idea that people could will themselves to be tougher til much later. If Armament Haki was there from the earliest drafts, it's hard to imagine that Shanks's desire to keep his arm was not stronger than some shitty east blue shark's desire to eat a kid. If it wasn't, well, Oda just kind of wrote a weird thing later on that makes the early parts of the series something to handwave (wew) away because the stuff happening now is more important than whether or not Shanks needed to lose an arm.

So you are saying a Haki'd sword could cut through literally anything? Why did Zoro bother to train at all instead of just learning Haki and cutting the world in half since the first island? Zoro's Haki is already getting to the point where he's eventually going to be cutting diamond, Mihawk is lazy and has no ambition of taking a title like Yonkou, and Mr 1 wasn't all that strong, seeing as he was taken down by some low tier newbie like Zoro.

The implication was that Law had gotten much stronger or that Vergo was weakening, because part of the reason Law feared him at all was because he'd gotten curbstomped by Vergo several times before and was initially unable to use his "cut fucking anything" powers on the guy.

If Shanks just scared the thing away or tore it to pieces, it would have been a pointless moment. The significance of the scene was that he put his body in danger without hesitation for Luffy's sake, which is one of the reasons Luffy respects him deeply.
