Until this thread hits the bump limit, I will aim to post one denpa song per day. I will try to make it a webm every time, but I may have to resort to hook/youtube or something if I don't make it.

Denpa is a broad type of music that had it's start when VNs and anime were making music that sounded like the idol pop hits of the day, just with the connotation that it's particularly made for Otaku or otherwise has a "strange" or "denpa" tint to it. As a result, most of that "classic sounding" anime and VN music you love sounds like it's stuck in that era. So, don't throw a fit if I post something you don't consider to be "denpa enough".

Denpa as a japanese term is a reference to a murderer who told the police he heard radio waves, or "denpa" in his head telling him to do it. It's now used in casual conversation as a word meaning "bizarre", "strange", "out of place" and so on. The anime "Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko" aimed to be entirely Denpa.

For starters, here's the 2D denpa idol unit, Shaking Pink. This entire album is fantastic if you can get your hands on it. I posted a link to it in the first music thread we had when I found it, but it's been a long time and I don't remember where I found it. I looked for it for quite a while.

I don't speak enough moon to understand everything that goes on, but it seems to me the album tells a story about a sheltered loli who goes into the outside world and gets full of herself because people start calling her cute.

I feel like the classics today, so here's Momoi Haruko AKA "Halko".

Halko is an idol who began with studying computers at an early age, bizarrely enough. As such, she naturally fell in with the Otaku scene. She sang and danced to anisongs around Akihabara at a time when it was still only known as the "electronics district", making her the first ever Akiba Idol. Eventually, she produced this video with her original song, GURA GURA, in 1997, making her one of the first actual Denpa artists. You could say that this video was the birth of Akihabara as we know it today, and Halko was the mother.

Because her subsequent songs were used in eroge, her producers wouldn't let her use her real name for the credits, spurning her to make an idol unit with another girl called "Under17", which she would make Denpa songs under. She began voice acting soon after and continues to sing anisongs to this day.

If anyone has a better version of this video, you are the hero of the internet. Also, if anyone can translate this song, you are also a hero, because apparently it's full of Otaku references.

Okay, now that I've slept off my hangover from last night, It's time for something a little more soothing than usual because I'm not sure posting something like Shaking Pink would be beneficial to anons' heads right now.

This is Yellow Magic Orchestra's Kimi ni Mune Kyun, which you all probably know already. It's probably going to be the most popular song I'll post here.

YMO was a pioneering electronic group in the same vein as Kraftwerk, and became the grandfather of the technopop sound in Citypop, chiptunes, Denpa, and beyond. They have inspired pretty much every piece of music to come out of Japan for decades.

In 1983, they decided to make something completely different. As a joke, they decided to try and get a #1 single because they were bored of being the progenitor of musical experimentation for an entire nation. To make it even more of a joke, they decided to sing it themselves, make a lazy music video where they dance lazily themselves, and make the lyrics super cutesy so everyone would watch these three middle age men act cute.

Because they knew so much about the music scene, people's tastes, the industry, and about making good sounding tunes themselves, they were able to pull off a #2 slot in the rankings.

It's also a good song.

Later, Maria Holic used a remake of the song for their ED, which I don't like as much as the original because it plays the joke straight.

Okay, I stayed up all night to put together a surprise for you all I'll show you at a later date.

For now, since it's technically Monday, here's the first song in a multi-day series about one of the first ever big Denpa artists, before Halko and after YMO.

This is Rumi Shishido AKA RunRun. At this time, Rumi is 16 years old and signed with Sony to become an idol. She was an only child and was in the baton twirling club in school. Her hero growing up was a famous actress, Etsuko Ichihara.

This is 1990, an era of the idol industry where they at least tried to produce songs that matched with the character of the idol, unlike nowadays where to be an idol you are pushed to become a product of your producer's design. This was an era of true idols, where each was different and unique, and to be on stage is to present at least an aspect of your true self. Idols were produced to let their selves shine.

As such, Rumi's songs were a bit, well, strange. Her catchphrase at the time was 「ルンルンはミニが好き」 "RunRun likes Mini". No, I don't know what this is supposed to mean. Strange-sounding idols were not such an uncommon thing, as there was Jun Togawa, the "Bug Woman" in the 80's (I'll probably post some of her stuff at a later date), but Sony would continue to force certain behaviors on young Rumi, wouldn't let her "speak out of turn" or make friends with idols from rival companies. In any case, her sound was highly praised. Using heavy electronic technopop, she has been called the "Original Techno Idol".

There's so much in this album that I want to post, and I might do so at a later date, but I think this makes the best introduction. This is 「好き」 off of Rumi Shishido's first album, 「ド・レ・ミ・ファ・ソ・ラ・シ・ド・シ・シ・ド・ル・ミ」.

You might recognize her voice as the voice of Puririn in Welcome to the NHK.

I used to dismiss idols as well. Now I spend days on end studying them.

Most people think of idols as just stale 3DPD waifu bait for the unfortunate Otaku, someone who is produced as a product to smile, look nice, and sell records. The current state of the industry with the AKB48 soulless units everywhere doesn't help things. I started getting into idols when I saw how different things used to be back in the 80's and 90's with all these unique idols and how much more alive they seemed than the modern soulless doll idol. You can see how much fun Halko is having in GURA GURA above and how much her personality is shining through.

With any luck, you can learn to appreciate true idols more through this thread and what you're going to see with RunRun in the coming days.

Okay, today I made three webms for you. Well, I made them last night before passing out. Today, I'm posting twice to give you all three of these webms of the same song.

The first two here are two different studio versions. This is because the original version you hear in this anime opening does not exist in it's full version anywhere on the internet as far as I know. If you happen to have it, post it and become a hero of the internet.

Now when we left off with Rumi-chan, it was 1990 and she was 16 years old in the Baton Twirling Club. It is now 1992 and she is 18. She was just scouted by an anime studio after hearing her voice work on her first album, 「ド・レ・ミ・ファ・ソ・ラ・シ・ド・シ・シ・ド・ル・ミ」. I haven't posted any of this, but I will in the future, and you can definitely hear the seiyuu potential in some of these tracks.

She got to voice a cute loli named Yuuni in the anime OVA series, K.O. Seiki Beast Sanjuushi (AKA K.O. Century Beast Warriors). She particularly liked doing the voice work, and she even got to sing the OP, which she will be singing on variety shows shortly.

Webm 1 is 「恋はマケラレネーション(New Remix)」 off of her second album with Sony, Punsuka.

Webm 2 is the OP for K.O. Seiki Beast Sanjuushi, 「恋はマケラレネーション」, which was probably only released as a single for the anime that nobody bought. I downloaded the only torrent of the anime on public trackers, but the idiots who put it together somehow made the second OP the OP for the entire series. So, this is a shitty Youtube rip of the proper OP. This is probably the only studio version of the original song you'll ever hear.

The single ranked #93.

>The one website that had an English translated interview with RunRun just went under.

Fucking hell, archive everything.

File: 05ad31e0a4d566c⋯.webm (15.14 MB, 640x480, 4:3, 恋はマケラレネーション.webm)

Now, this is one of the few performances during this time period you can find of RunRun.

At this time in her career, despite everything I said before about idols being produced to let their inner selves shine in this time period, Sony continues to try and mold her into an idol they they want her to be. This is 1992, afterall, and the bubble era is closing. As said before, she is not allowed to make friends with idols from rival companies and her new love of voice acting, putting her into contact with other girls who also love to voice act only exacerbates the issue. She was told to "not act out" and always smile.

At the end of this video you can see her "act out". In later versions of the same performance here, she does not do this again. The speakers comment in later shows, "Oh, no pantsu today?". Faxes were sent in talking about the idols on that day, "So-and-so is acting very idol-like, oh, and Rumi-chan is controlling herself today."

I don't know if she did that to rebel against Sony, or if it's something Sony wanted her to do, but the fact that she doesn't do it in later shows shows that there is a disconnect between her and what Sony wants her to be.

Here, you can see the beginning death throws of the Golden Age of the Idol Industry.

1992 would become an important year for 18 year old Rumi Shishido.

This was when she did something no other idol would do: She ended her contract with Sony and was kicked out of the industry. She wouldn't appear on television for another 20 years.

Sorry it's already tomorrow for some of you, but it's still Wednesday in my time zone. I had to finish putting together that surprise for today's post. It's nothing big, but I hope you appreciate the effort.

"I didn't want to become the ballad the office was trying to make." was what Rumi-chan said about leaving Sony at age 18. Afterwards, she entered a rough period of her life. Sony actively sought to block all attempts at her re-entering into the industry at any level, forcing her to try and make a living off of pachinko and selling paintings she painted. This hopeless state of affairs lasted for three whole years until she persevered long enough to release an album on her own in 1995, entitled 「Set Me Free」. This is a landmark occasion because it's the first time an idol self-published anything, making Rumi Shishido the first ever independent idol. She did everything, public relations, management, accounting, etc.

This would be followed by an entire sub-industry known to fans as Chika Idols, or Underground Idols. Live Idols, Net Idols, and most Akiba Idols like Halko would all follow in Rumi-chan's footsteps. This sub-industry continues to this day and is only now finally breaking through the crushing stranglehold the mainstream industry has over idols.

In that album, RunRun released a track that was a love letter to her fans who supported her through her dark years. It's called 「1990 ~ALL THE YOUNG NERDS~」. Yes, the title is in English and she's talking to her Otaku. I painstakingly translated it by ear the best I could. If any of you are better at moon, please send help. This is the surprise I was working on for the past couple of days.

In the same year that Rumi-chan released her self-published 「Set Me Free」, she re-entered the anime and music industries as a freelance talent by voicing the lead role in Gokinjo Monogatari (Neighborhood Stories) and singing the accompanying OP, which was her first single since 「恋はマケテラレネーション」 from 1992 when she was still under Sony.

This is 「ヒ・ロ・イ・ン」, the OP to Gokinjo Monogatari, a shoujo anime about love and following your dreams. The MC is a cute classical tsundere.

I couldn't find the single anywhere online again, so we'll have to make due with this youtube rip. Also, as bonus material, here's the self-produced CM she made to sell the single. That's her voice announcing over her singing. Don't You Know is the ED to Gokinjo Monogatari and was released in the same single. It's super cute if you want to look it up. I might post it later. Just watched the first episode, and damn. I didn't mention this before but Rumi's parents were also divorced. She was an only child of an old Samurai family, the grand daughter of a monk, but she went to live with her mom in Hiroshima after the divorce happened. I wonder what her family life was like.

Oh shoot, I almost missed my deadline.

This is 「井の頭にて 」off of Rumi-chan's 7th album, 「Cherbourg→Brighton」, released in 2011. This is the first album she produced since 2003 and was in essence her come back to music since then. It was the first in a three-part series of albums she released in the following years, 「Cherbourg→Brighton」, 「女」, 「Ruminescence」. This was made after her fans put together the "Rumi Shishido support project" to celebrate her 20th anniversary of her debut with Sony. There was an event with her on UStream during this time that gave the site it's most views in it's history. Her return to music probably wouldn't have happened if not for her fans during this time.

After the three-part project was finished, she was invited onto 「1番ソングSHOW・あなたが今一番見たい幻のアイドル大捜索SP.」, a television program that translates out to "Number 1 SHOW, the Phantom Idol you all want to see the most Special" in 2013, after the final album in the three-part series. This would be the first time in 20 years that she appeared on television.

Hope you enjoy. I really like the song and the video.

Well, that depends.

There was Jun Togawa back in the 80's who stubbornly went against idol conventions made her image and music to one of her liking back when the mainstream industry still allowed it, despite the unpopularity it gave her.

Then there's Kamen Joshi who is still working to crash the mainstream industry with no survivors by becoming the first Chika Idol unit to make a #1 hit, which they've done twice in a row now, as revenge against what the mainstream industry has become and the illicit practices it holds such as forcing sexual favors and extorting money out of idols, many of who are now Kamen Joshi members.

But has anyone ever flipped the script so hard and went from shunned talent on the streets to the phantom idol seiyuu we know now all because they wouldn't let her be who she wanted to be? No, never. Hers is a tale that directly reflects the time she appeared. The bubble era was closing and the economy was crashing hard, making the idol production houses panic and try to sell a refined product rather than an individual girl's charm.

Similarly, her return is reflects the reactionary sentiment many girls would have in the coming years, and shows what true idols were to become. Namely, Chika Idols. In this case, the disease was followed immediately by the cure, reflected in the life of a single girl.

As you can tell, I am an idolfag who has zero respect for the current mainstream industry

I knew someone was going to bring up Perfume.

They are an unique unit themselves who funnily enough share a lot of similarities with RunRun, from being from Hiroshima to being the continuation of Rumi-chan's "Techno Idol" image. Okite Porsche, a famous Idol Otaku and lead of Japan's New Wave band, Roman Porsche, who famously supported Perfume in their Independent/Chika years used to religiously follow Rumi-chan.

Technically, they started out as Chika Idols themselves, being Local Idols to Hiroshima and later becoming Akiba Idols like Halko. They even performed Halko's Akihabara Love during this time, with Halko appearing on stage as "DJ Momo-i" who produced the song for Perfume.

Then they were consumed by the mainstream industry and I lost a lot of respect for what they became. Now, they just go on stage to play a part and no longer act like idols from what I've seen. They are just dolls used to sell Yasutaka's music at this point and have no personality themselves.

So, I liked them when they were Chika Idols back when they wore the retro techno future outfits, but no longer hold them in such a high regard. I haven't been wow'd by any of their performances since they started all their autotune shit. If you can change my mind, please do. I really do like their previous selves. Whenever I see them perform one of their older songs, they seem to always have so much more fun than when they do any of the newer robot performances.

That's not to say that idols built around a robot-doll like image is bad, as that was what WINK was and they were great as the idols who don't smile, but it doesn't fit Perfume's actual personality. Rumi's songs were Denpa and technopop because she was kind of Denpa and that was her soul become sound. Halko's songs were Denpa and anisong covers because she is the goddess of Akihabara and loved the Otaku scene, an Otaku who grew up with computers herself. When you watch Perfume on stage just talking and having a good time, they have nothing in common with Yasutaka's music and their play-acting as dancing robots of his design.

Because I'm talking about it, today's song will be Akihabara Love, produced by Momoi Haruko for Perfume. Look at how much fun they have here and compare it to what you know of Perfume today to see what I mean and why I'm so harsh on current Perfume.

Again, any studio version of Halko's version is impossible to find and the single of Perfume's version was only sold at events and some online shops to promote Uchimizu events in Akihabara where everyone would throw water on the ground to cool off the air, making it pretty rare.

Yes, Halko loves her hometown of Akihabara so much she put together promotion events to take care of the heat in the city in the traditional Japanese way, producing a love song for Akiba in the process. That is a true idol.

First up is Momoi Haruko's performance.

Sorry for the late reply. I needed to encode these videos.

I don't feel particularly well today, so let's drop all the deep lore today and go for something more familiar, but still a bit novel.

During the huge Haruhi boom most of you probably remember, these three seiyuu were becoming somewhat of an idol unit all their own with their own original songs and everything. During the whole Haruhi era, they would often do live performances together and make singles as their characters before the Haruhi franchise crashed with no survivors except the bassist.

This is one of them, made for the Haruhi no Gekido Wii rhythm game in 2009. The album has an original song made for each of the three girls, and this, the fourth track, is the song released with all of them together as a unit.

This is 「BE BE BEAT!!」 off of the Haruhi no Gekido album.

I think I leveled up my understanding of these sort of events a little: That performance looks like so much fun!

All the shows or concerts I've been to have never seemed like this much fun. Leaving the performer aside, I'm talking about the unity of the crowd. There's all synchronized. They're all on the same page. That must be amazing. That must be like being at a show in a room full of anons. Like if there was a big, real-life r/a/dio bash and every anon was invited. That's something I think I only ever felt once with this random dude at a rave who was also on ecstasy.

Is your secret plan to turn all anons into indolfags? Because it might be working.

Now you are beginning to understand. Idols aren't there to be tryhards who just get a routine down.

They're there to hang out with fans as themselves, to bring their best, most true selves to light and become goddesses for the evening. You aren't there for THEM. They are there for YOU. They are there to foster a community between all fans. Their personalities are there to bring out the love in the fans and attract everyone together. If they dance like robots who have no soul, there's not going to be a whole lot of hot-blooded love in the crowd.

What the crowd is doing is Wotagei, which is a culture like Otaku who come up with specific dances and cues for the crowd to do while the idol is singing. They are the heart of all idolfaggotry. Idols are there specifically to extract that passion from the crowd and inspire more still. It's like moe which is there to instill a longing to protect and give headpats.

It's not about the performance, which is what the mainstream industry gets so wrong. They focus too much on making each dance perfect and having girls show off singing in tune when they're really just supposed to be hanging out and having fun. If the girl is dead inside but has perfect steps, it does nothing for me and I don't have fun. The only way a girl can have fun is through being themselves, not as a product.

That's what makes a live so great.

Included in Wotagei is something called MIX, which goes like this:

TIGER

FIRE

CYBER

FIBER

DIVER

VIBER

JAA JAA

Which you've probably heard at one point or another. The crowd spontaneously erupts into this chant because it's the closest way they can add their own passion for the idol to the performance. The man responsible for making this a Wotagei thing produced a Chika Idol unit called Jewel Kiss, who's aim is to be a Local Idol unit forever.

This is 「ミラクル☆初デート」 "Miracle First Date" by Jewel Kiss. The thing the wotas do for this song is RUN. FUCKING RUN.

I wasn't able to make a workable webm in time, so I'm resorting to links this time around. This is the only MV or PV or anything that isn't their one album I've seen.

I don't have much to day about the particular song or album, but Momobako is a major veteran in denpa. She's done a lot of stuff over the years and consistently works with great composers. Notable is the duo ちぃむdmp☆ with Aihara Kaori which produced a lot of good stuff, a couple of releases with the well-known Nanahira and as of recent, she's in a duo with miko, which has collabed with Yunomi a couple times now.

She's also on the Petit Rhythm series, a great series of albums by Poyacchio that brings together some great denpa talent. Which is what I love about Petit rhythm -finale-, one of my favourite denpa albums.

>>833240

A lot of people feel this way but, denpa isn't a general term for anime music. Music is denpa when it has denpa-kei. The more familiar with denpa you become, the easier it is to spot. So though there's plenty of anime music that is denpa, there's more denpa that isn't anime music.

>>834514

>>835178

On one hand, I can't help but agree since I find that is ruining a lot of good groups. Current AKB most prominently, sickens me in that sense of being oriented towards pretty performance over audience appeals.

But on the other hand, CAPSULE's songs have all been great songs with a lot of legitimacy as music outside of Akiba appeal. They've carved out an aesthetic that is interesting and enjoyable, just in a completely different sense than their past work. While they still show a lot of their techno roots in ways, the appreciation for current Perfume is in their role as performers in general, not as idols first. I think what's different about Perfume to AKB that makes it fine is that they aren't just trying cash in on a more marketable aesthetic, they have become legimately great performers with a strong music producer.

While it is enjoyable, you're right, if you're looking for the 'idol factor' in them, you won't find it. Most groups who ditch their idol factor never find anything that can succeed in its place, but I believe Perfume did.

Oh, I didn't know she collaborated with Nanahira. That's pretty cool.

Thanks for chiming in. I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows these things. AKB represents everything I hate about the industry. They are even trying to steal MIX as their own thing because the mainstream industry just can't not consume everything around it. This is why we need Kamen Joshi.

The thing is the mainstream industry claims to represent the idol industry but they don't even have talent with that idol factor anymore. It's been stripped from them like the antagonists from Wake Up Girls.

If you can see Perfume as your standard performers, they're not bad, but they are not idols, not anymore. When I watch them, I can't help but be sour about what they could have been as dance choreography-focused idols like they once were and how the mainstream industry is squeezing all talent into being like them and not about being like actual idols, not to mention their scummy practices which inadvertently created Kamen Joshi as a reactionary idol unit, and probably many more.

Like I said, Perfume is just there to sell Yasutaka's music at this point. That's not to say Yasutaka doesn't make good music. I quite like the songs, but Perfume is just pretty faces to sell the music, like all mainstream idols are. Perfume just has the benefit of having a good music producer, that's the only reason they stand out.

Today's song is Sweet Donuts by Perfume. It's the first song they released with Yasutaka, who went on to become their #1 music producer. Sweet Donuts has the proper synergy of his music as well as fitting in with Perfume's actual character.

I should thank you, you're doing international wota a service by getting people onto idols and showing the real reason to like them instead of k-pop stuff. I don't get to be as much of the wota I used to be now, but there's a shortage of us and this thread put a smile on my face.

Yeah. I enjoy them for what they are, but I know what they are isn't idols (Though I'm sure they still have it in them). I can respect why you'd be frustrated and I know that if I were more invested in Perfume then I'd probably feel the same way.

It really is interesting the growing divide between the presentation of the music and the heart of idol groups. Songs were complementary to the idol's personality and needed their character but also exemplified the best parts of it. Together with the idol's performance they were worth more than the sum of their parts. Now they are separate entities that are just to get people in the door with flashiness and not personality and that's a shame.

I can see that and what you mean in the Sweet Donuts vid. It's a simple choreography, and that lets them be themselves and inject that into the performance. The complex choreographies give no chance for that to happen, too much is going on at once.

***

I'll go a bit into denpa-kei for those who don't know yet so that the difference is a little clearer since it's usually a little blurry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KojImrovhKE

Take this lolicore song. It really carries the ethos of denpa-kei in it. How do you present those feelings, the disconnection from reality and society, the otaku delusion and anime allusion in a package that doesn't break from the fantasy of anime and moe?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkFjyMfAR9o

This is the answer. MilliRobo.beta is well-regarded as "true denpa". The translation is important here btw so read as you listen. The lyrics are logically of the same framework as anime songs, but are clearly 'off': the narrator of the song is lonely and psychotic. The composition, while containing all the kinds of synths, sounds and voices that you'd expect from anime music is written under that same lens and has syncopated rhythms and ominous synth lines overlayed by cheerful singing to capture that disordered thought. It's the gap you feel when you've been home alone and can't leave your house while at the same time you're immersed in the cheerful lives of high school girls.

This is why denpa isn't just anime music. It feeds you the anime while telling you you're gluttonous. First and foremost it's about that disconnected-ness and weirdness that makes denpa-kei.

>and showing the real reason to like them instead of k-pop stuff

See, this is what I hate. k-pop is a copy of the bastardization of the nip mainstream idol industry I've spent so much time shitting on. The people who get into k-pop are the shit eaters among shit eaters and there are so god damn many of them. At this point it even feels like the nip industry is trying to copy their copy.

The only place True Idols exist anymore is in the Chika scene.

>I don't get to be as much of the wota I used to be now

I'm a frustrated idolfag. I'm going to see Aqours when they go to LA next month because I need to wota. If I ever say anything that isn't true about wotagei, please keep me honest. You're most likely the senpai here.

Yeah, we are so very few, but there will be more of us in time.

>(Though I'm sure they still have it in them)

This is the worst part about Perfume. They were Chika Idols and definitely had talent but the they are now, they don't get to express themselves or have fun with the fans anymore except for rare times they get to perform one of their older songs like in that video.

>Those links

Ah yeah, that's pure, perfect denpa. Thanks, anon.

And thanks for explaining it so well. This is why Rumi-chan's music is Denpa, and why she can be a true Denpa Idol. She's one of the few idols that I feel can actually pull it off to the degree she does. It's because of who she is and the shit she went through.

Even though the Gokinjo Monogatari OP is in the end hopeful and looking forward, there's a disconnect in how RunRun sings, making you at once also feel grounded in reality. The disconnect here is between the romance of ideals and the grounded way she sings about it, somehow making me feel like reality will swallow that romance, too. The fact that it's the first single for her come back doesn't help.

1990 ~ALL THE YOUNG NERDS~ is a hopeful and nice song for her fans, but you can't help but feel sad as fuck listening to it because of how she sings and the lyrics tearing you up inside when they're supposed to be uplifting. She sings with all the pain she built up in her life. 君が暗いと僕は辛いよ always gets me.

This is why she was perfect as Puririn in NHK. The entire point of that character was to portray this disconnect between fantasy and reality. Rumi-chan herself wanted to be an idol and acts like one as much as she can, but her actual situation is the reality.

Funny story: When asked to sing Nth color in Pretty Rhythm, the director scolded her for singing the way she usually does and had to give her supplementary voice lessens for the type of singing he wanted for the character, and Rumi got embarrassed because she's suppposed to be the Senpai in the studio.

I tend to think Denpa music has to do with expressing the feelings of and making it for a precise audience, namely the disassociated anon-types, which is why most animu and VN music is inherently denpa.

Yeah. That's generally what I find frustrating too. I find it hilarious and baffling that the moment k-pop got a few of the aspects of idols right in the form of Produce 101, people had their minds blown as if idols that you truly paid attention to for the idols hadn't existed until then. The copy their copy thing was already transparent in the form of E-girls (still enjoyable but it's clear what they're going for) but completely shameless with Produce48, which in the worst case scenario will create a sizable k-pop oriented fanbase that forces the industry to turn further away from their roots in response.

Unfortunately there's no good way to be involved in the chika scene without having enough Japanese and that's something I have to work on.

Nothing wrong with that ahah, I don't mind anime idol groups myself it only bothers me when their fans don't know 3D idols exist. You've gotten to a lot of depth that I didn't get to, especially when it comes to the history so I wouldn't see myself as the senpai here.

That happens to also be one of my major gripes about k-pop. Their fans hardly want to see their favourite idols have fun. The performance comes first and that's a toxic mindset.

>Puririn

That's pretty salient, it's a great example of early/proto denpa. I think I'll be looking more into her work. An anon elsewhere wrote:

"I would like to note 2006's 'Welcome to the NHK' insert song 'Fushigi Purupuru Pururin Rin!'. In the anime, a young otaku is seen entranced by the song, devoutly playing it every day at the same hour. The song describes Pururin, a magical girl, or perhaps a normal young girl, and her efforts to use her powers to appease a fellow boy. It is not reminiscent of denpa music of the time in composition, but the method through which the situation is conveyed fits well into the sheltered otaku mindset, of a magical girl bringing salvation to the supposedly lonesome, desolate man. The hikkikomori, in this case, going well with the theme of the show.

It is reminiscent of moe denpa in that there is a character behind the singing which prompts a soothing, warm, cute feeling within the listener, perhaps more so than modern moe denpa iterations, and this is back in 2006! This is before the scopes of activity of the many moe vocalists of today."

It's common for denpa artists to be working on the OP/ED of VNs and on occasion anime to. Denpa has self-awareness and that's pretty common to be the case for a lot of anime/VN music especially now. It makes the difference pretty subtle.

This is Camellia, (Spelt かめりあ not カメリア. I thought it was funny he made such a distinction. Also known as Cametek.), a big name in the denpa scene today. Born in 1992 in Hokkaido, he began composing at the age of 10 on his mother's PC.

He got his start with Vocaloid and his favorite to work with is Miku. He then became a DJ and made remixes of anisongs, going on to making music for Etotama.

His most famous Miku song is "Systematic Love", which was used in the Project DIVA Future Tone arcade game. This is the video.

Here's the live performance from Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekisou, which was a pretty cool event in 2007 with all the voice actors from the anime making an appearance, performing live skits along with performances of all the songs.

Watching this reminds me of just how great Aya in particular was back then. She was the first idol I ever got into and she really was the biggest up and coming star in this era before she neglected the bassist.

Haruhi and Aya were inseparable and the popularity of each fed the popularity the other. It's hard to convey just how monstrously big Haruhi got during this time if you weren't there.

Today I'll share the beginnings of Nanahira.

Nanahira got her start as an Utaite, which is someone who covers songs and uploads them to NicoNico. She got known for her bratty loli-like voice and later on went to become big in the Denpa scene. This is 「物凄い狂っとるフランちゃんが物凄いうた」, "Sugoi Crazy Flan-chan's Sugoi Song". This was back in 2010, when she was just starting to get noticed and she got to sing this Sugoi Denpa touhou uta.

This is the MMD version someone made, and the song is popular on Osu. I like just how much she can pull of a bratty, crazy loli. Notice she says "Denpa" in it.

Well it's many weeks late but here's some info about 桃箱. I've noticed that many of my favorite singers have names that start with an M, and もも fits the bill. I find her to be one of the more cute and energetic singers. Her voice is pretty unique and has a sense of smugness to it. She's really fun to listen to because it feels like she's having fun too. Like my favorite album from her, the general character she plays is a 箱入り娘 which is basically a sheltered girl. I believe that she shines the most by herself since she gets overshadowed by other singers, but she does a lot of collaborative songs. Most people probably know her as モモ as part of Shaking Pink which is in the OP (or pomme'tto which is a new group that consists of the same members ナナ、モモ、ココ). Her other well known works are probably the ちむdmp albums that she does with miko who I don't like very much. As with many similar artists, you can find her doing work with other popular circles like プヤッチオ and IOSYS. They have the ラブチュ series of albums and there's also ラブリッコト。 ななひら and ココ play a queen from the future リコリス and some other character I haven't figured out 琴乃 respectively. The goal of these two is to bring love and peace to the world through singing.

Speaking of Momobako, today we will be looking at her beginnings.

An Utaite herself, she joined forced with another Utaite, Aihara Kaori, to create 「ちぃむdmp☆」, the same Denpa duo who would go on to make the album referenced here >>832387

Before this holy union, however, the first song she ever released was on a collaboration album. It was a cover of Cagayake!Girls, the OP to K-On!, alongside Nanahira, setting the precedent of them working together. Most of what she does is under 「ちぃむdmp☆」, but she often goes back to work alongside her Senpai, Nanahira. Unfortunately, this album and this cover is lost to the bowels of the internet and I cannot find it.

Instead, here's 「専属メイド☆宣言」 "Exclusive Maid☆ Declaration", in which they sing about being your meido and moe moe kyun. This is from ちぃむdmp☆'s first album 「電波っぽいのっ!」. This album was released only a few months after her appearance on the aforementioned Utaite collaboration album.

Unlike Nanahira, right off the bat we see her usual image: peach/pink twintails tied with blue bows. Also unlike Nanahira, while also seen as loli, her voice is more light and fuwa fuwa, with often airheaded baka boke lines.

The blue-haired twintail loli is Aihara Kaori, and I really was never able to find out much about her other than she works with Momobako in ちいむdmp☆.

>Metal Passion featuring 桃箱

You can expect this to be a great album because of 桃箱 so I won't say much about it. Despite the second track being called 100 Eggs, I'm pretty sure she says たまご more than 100 times.

>Strawberry Hunter featuring 未々子

I don't know that much about 未々子 since I could only find a single song by her in my whole library. If anyone knows more about her, do tell. She reminds me of a rougher version of 山本椛 mixed together with ちょこ which is definitely a good thing.

>Sakura Congratulation featuring きゃらめる

I was pretty surprised to see きゃらめる as the utaite for this one. She has a pretty generic voice that's not that great but it's still recognizable to me anyways. The songs I've heard her in are generally hit or miss. This album is the weakest of the three in my opinion, but it's still a pretty decent listen. I've seen her mainly in two circles, the first being Maple Sugar where she sings with 野々宮めぷ and the second being うさみみりぼん where she sings with 雨音。Both circles have a few songs that I like but, like this album, it's nothing super amazing.

I can fill in posting songs but I don't really know the history/background on all the utaite I listen to. At best I can describe them, related circles/utaite, and small tidbits I know.

For now have some ちょこ. I don't know anything about her except that she's really cute. She does some alright moe-pop songs but also great denpa songs. Her voice is surprisingly flexible and she can do a variety of tones when she needs to. I didn't know the max file-size was 16MB, so have two songs. The first one is from 「ちょこっと配信ちゅう!」 while the second one is from CandyPopParty. Both albums are great; the latter album is entirely composed by 立秋 if you're a fan. By herself the circle she goes by is called ちょこっとだけ while her other main circle is twinkle where she sings with みるく (which means they're ちょこ みるく). You can also find her doing other work once in a while with other circles like プヤッチオ.

>Wow, this is a great song

The circle is called Mamyukka and the album is King Piglot. Each album has a unique sound to go with the theme/setting, but they generally have a orchestral/symphonic/gothic fantasy/musical feeling. I personally consider it more fantasy than denpa, but some people might classify it as denpa. They use a few different talented utaite like 愛原圭織 and 後藤ハルキ, but the main one they use is まめこ。まめこ and 愛原 both have done denpa, but not 後藤ハルキ from what I can tell. まめこ uses both her moe voice and her normal voice for a lot of songs, but I like her moe voice a lot more. Her normal voice leaves a bit to be desired, but it's still alright to listen to. I love all their albums because of the fantasy/musical feeling it has which does remind me of denpa a little. Anyways, you can get King Piglot here: https://mega.nz/#!61QnkY7D!I39G8lozIsLXG3rpLydqbClIvaCwH5o6kTdD-Ad78es

Alright, posting below (copied and pasted from the public bans list):

ちぃむdmp is with Aihara Kaori not miko by the way. The unit doesn't really have a name and the works with miko are usually just listed as 桃箱 & miko. Though I'd agree that miko is one of the weaker denpa singers out there, since it's not really her domain, she has good chemistry with MMBK, which I think you see well here on ぷちもも: ###Link-Removed### I love this song, it's hilarious. とろ美 and ちょこ. I love ちょこ for, despite being one of the newer artists on the scene, being able to straddle the line between moe denpa and true denpa well. The thread would benefit a lot with both. Non-denpa is good too though it'd probably be helpful to say it's non-denpa when you do. It really is harder to find true denpa and I admittedly don't know that many either. I know きゅん×2カーニバル had some good true denpa releases though they're a little difficult to find.

>>838021

I was just thinking about linking this. It has some nice fanservice and scripted bits as well as the videos for some of her songs. Her MvCI stream was fun.

>>838032

>>838140

This is one of my favourite ちぃむdmp☆ songs. NanosizeMir brings the best out of both singers here. It's a shame we don't see more of Aihara Kaori as I think she has one of my favourite voices. I miss the duo, they had such a great body of work. Kaori has been active since ちぃむdmp☆ but spread out across a lot of places. She did a few songs for the Taiko games and some songs for various circles like wih ピコロニーノーツ5.Though it came out in August for C92 she's been active since then. She recently had a song on SYNC.ART'S' 0と1の円環論理, which came out in December for C93. Her page on Production GIW's site, which she works under, has her listed as currently under medical care and this likely explains her disappearance during 2018. Hopefully she recovers and we can hear her voice again in C94.

>>838138

I like this a lot. I don't think I would have found this so thanks for that.

>>838466

Those are both great. As far as I can tell Choko was part of IOSYS as one of the more recent members before going off to create her circle, ちょこっとだけ. Also notable is her duo twinkle.

Coincidentally my internet died while OP is dead. Have some とろ美. I don't know anything about her so I'll keep it short. She can sing, voice act, and draw (some of her album art is drawn by her). I don't really know what circles/utaite/artists she mostly associates with so some other anon can fill in for me. The first track 「壱.寺ズッキュン!愛の了法寺!」is とろ美xARM and comes from the album 「寺ズッキュン!愛の了法寺」 while 「しずる」 comes from 「PROTOROTYPE VER.0.3」 which I'll probably upload tomorrow when my internet is better. Since OP is dead for another day, I might do some non-denpa stuff tomorrow.

>>838742

The 高等遊民 character is one of the things I dislike. In this one and the other tracks with this character, miko definitely tries too hard to fit in this role/use this voice that doesn't fit her. 桃箱 definitely saves the drama tracks because she can play the imouto role so well. Miko's singing isn't too bad either, I listen to and like a lot of things she's in, but she's a bit boring compared to other utaite. Miko is alright, but something about her voice isn't fun or cute to me.

This album was made in 2012 and is the first time Nanahira and Momobako would work together since that aforementioned Utaite collaboration album when they sung Cagayake! Girls together, before Nanamix where they would sing only one song together here >>838432

The entire album is credited to both of them and if they created a joint circle from here, I don't think anyone would complain. This album has to be one of my favorites from either of them, and it would lead to many more collaboration projects between them in the future.

>their odenpa gakuen album together

Anon please, it's not their album. They only did guest vocals on one track, and not even the one you posted. Take a look at the credits on the album's web page. You only see nana and momo under guest vocals and in the 4th track. Everywhere else you have the odenpa girls who don't even sound similar to nana/momo. I only keep bringing it up because you say it's one of your favorites but you give credit to the entirely wrong people. So to introduce each of the odenpa girls, here's their character bios on their website. My Japanese isn't actually the best so it might be inaccurate, but I'll try my best.

>ゆな voiced by なつき

She's a girl that wants to be a seiyuu. ゆな is one of those nice but air-headed girls, and she's always passionate or excited about something.

>みさき voiced by 津軽りんご

The childhood friend of ゆな、she's a tsundere. I'm not really sure what the last sentence means so I won't translate it.

>かなで voiced by ねこめ

The one I like the most. Her main job is being the managing director of the World Tsurupetta Society. She got transferred to Odenpa Studio, but she doesn't work. In the waiting room she watches anime and plays games. Basically she's an otaku.

>どみそ voiced by ほたる

She showed up from somewhere, どみそ is a clumsy magical girl.

Normally they sing together, but it's hard to figure out who's who. To help with that, have some solo songs by each of them. The first song is by ゆな(CV:なつき) called 「メインヒロイン(仮)」 from an album of the same name. The second song is by みさき(CV:津軽りんご) called 「きみにツンツン」 from the album 「キャッチン☆こたつ」。

I was planning to never repeat a circle/album twice (on different days), but that doesn't seem very sustainable. I'm still not close to running out of things to post, but I might just start picking a random song/utaite or two from my library to post instead, not worrying about double-dipping, but avoiding posting the same utaite within a small time-span unless someone requests something. This will also let me post other good songs from these circles/albums that I would not have originally. What do other anons think, any better suggestions /changes/comments on how to make better posts? OP originally wanted to post one webm a day but I'm just making small dumps at this point, am I posting too many songs at once now?

So far, most of the things in this thread have been standalone releases by individual circles, but you might find these circles/utaite/artists making songs for other media too. Today I will focus on rhythm games, specifically in iidx. There's probably a lot more in sdvx, but I haven't been able to play it as much so I don't know the library as well. If you have a good arcade nearby (or if know how to get a cracked version), give it a try since it's a lot of fun and it's nice seeing songs by artists you know. The songs I chose are all sung by 山本椛 who I associate with IOSYS/ARM. As these are songs designed for rhythm games, they are shorter than normal, but occasionally the artist releases a long version (usually labeled as such) in their album like 「突撃!ガラスのニーソ姫! - long ver. -」。No download today, but if I do more posts like this I'll put all the songs in a zip later.

It's me! The number 1 ななひら fan!

Man oh man, today I remembered this gem of a song. I really love it, it has put so much emotions into it and 楓璃夢 voice goes really well with ななひら loli-esque voice. It so "rough" and it reminds me alot to Alpaca from Kemono friends. For that reason it's so very endearing to me

OP here. I'm not going to be able to post every day anymore, but I'll still post here every once in a while.

I got into a car accident after going down to LA to be a wota. Yeah, I'm okay, but the cost is going to make me have to abandon my NEET life sooner than I had anticipated.

I asked a friend to tell you guys OP wasn't coming back soon and I didn't know if I ever was going to be at the time, so sorry if I scared anyone. I just don't have the stamina to post here like I used to after that because my body still needs time to heal. I'll be back in action in a few weeks, maybe.

I never once said my rabbits so maybe being alive at all is my luck after that crash. Everyone says I'm lucky. If I had said it, I might be dead right now.

This is the Gokinjo Monogatari ED by Rumi Shishido I said I'd post at some point, 「Don't You Know」. The lyrics are really cute and relatable to a lot of us, I'm sure.

A young girl was fat, ugly and bullied growing up. This fat, ugly school girl dreamed of being an actress. To train for her dream, she would often do speech practice and sit-up exercises on her school’s rooftop during middle and high school. She would eat for pleasure around this time as well, due to boredom and being bullied. She gained weight during school as a result. The fact that she is always compared to her sister doesn’t help. During primary school, she joined the Himawari Theatre Group with her younger sister.

Her sister, had a bright and cheery personality, and would often play roles that fit this. The two were always seen as contrasting and the drastic differences between them worried many around them.

A strict home, she was never allowed to go out on Sundays, until 1979 when she entered University. She had the sudden realization that it was possible to go out on Sundays at this time. She was off to see a movie and at Hibiya Park, happened to see the live of a punk band,「8 1/2」and immediately became a fan. When she went to see them a second time, she became an acquaintance with the group and from then on began to go out to Shibuya’s legendary rock cafe「NYLON100%」with them. Although she didn’t plan on becoming a musician as an actress, she liked「蘇州夜曲」, which she often sang at「NYLON100%」with those punk band members. This is how her band, Guernica, was formed.

This is the origin of one of the most foremost Denpa artists in history.

Here’s「銀輪は唄う/マロニエ読本」 by Jun Togawa. This is the first single she ever released alongside an album,「改造への躍動」with the band in 1982. A few months later her name became nationally known when during her acting career, she was cast in a commercial for the Washlette, a new product by TOTO. Here’s the CM. I think it speaks for itself. Let it be known that Jun Togawa started her career as the toilet lady.

After releasing her first album with Guernica, Togawa Jun was pressured into focusing more on her music by the industry, who felt that to be an entertainer, your music career had to come first. She, on the other hand, had always only wanted to be an actress and to her, her music project with Guernica was only something on the side to help her relieve stress.

She always loved acting, seeing it as a way to become someone else than herself. Similarily, she found that lives were a way to experience this desire to change herself with the outfits and performance. In this way, she found more enjoyment out of her music career.

The next thing she released is this album, under her own name and styling herself as the "Insect woman". Here, she was able to use being an idol as a platform for her acting and she began to have fun with it, bringing in her Punk influences as well.

In this video, she sings a cute normal-sounding cute song before the commercial, and then when she comes back, you see this. This is her acting on stage and it's beautiful.

This is 「玉姫様」 from the album of the same name.

Just before the release of 玉姫様 Togawa Jun formed a band with Saeki Kenzou, the vocalist of Pearl Kyoudai, which you all may know from their excellent work on the Welcome to the NHK soundtrack, including Youkoso! Hitori Bocchi and Dark Side Ni Tsuitekite, which are often played during the depression block in Saturday r/a/dio streams. It's quite fitting that so many people responsible for Denpa at all turned out to have such roles in Welcome to the NHK, don't you think? From Shishido Rumi to Pearl Brothers.

This band is to be called Togawa Jun and the Yapoos. Or just Yapoos. They added Togawa Jun's name in the front because she was starting to become an idol.

Separate from her solo work, Yapoos are known to be more collaborative projects with her other band members. Since she found this strange life where she's singing instead of acting, Togawa uses the music stage to act. The first thing they released was a live album featuring Tamahime-sama of Togawa's solo work along with a bunch of other songs all of Yapoos made together. One of these is 「電車でGO! 」 which you might have heard in the lead in to trainroll during Saturday r/a/dio some nights.

As far as I know, this was never released as a studio version so you get to see the excellent live performance of the song and get to appreciate Togawa Jun's denpa charm on stage. She came out wearing this. This is 「電車でGO! 」 off of 「裏玉姫」 and later 「蛹化(むし)の女~蜷川実花セレクション」 . This entire show is amazing and if you like what you're seeing of Togawa Jun these past few weeks, I hope you look for the whole thing.

"The charm of being a actress is that you can become someone else, likewise, the outfits I can wear during lives comes from this desire to be someone else."

"I find that there are multiple personalities within myself. Every character I play is inside of me, and who comes out depends on the situation and what costume is worn. Sometimes, it's even surprising to hear about what I do at other shooting sites."

These are extremely butchered quotes from Togawa Jun, but it gives you the idea of how she became an actress during her time as an idol.

A boke in more ways than one, she once slept with a cigarette in her mouth only to wake at it burning her, causing a widespread news story. She also has astigmatism, causing her to often seem like she's looking at the wall to the side when talking to someone. Because she is seen as a "mysterious girl" character, girls of that nature try to approach her, but she really dislikes that type of person, often claiming that she is only acting the part of a sick person. However, as we know from her style of acting, that type of person is indeed a part of her.

Speaking of a sick person, here's the famous 「好き好き大好き」 off of the album of the same name. Here, she plays the part of the Yandere and is joined by Susumu Hirasawa of Satoshi Kon film fame. He would often work with her after this.

Here's the song from the album, and the PV she made for the music video in which she plays up her role. You can see at the end where she apologizes to the cat. I think it's cute and shows what kind of an idol she is.

There's not really much else to say about the woman other than the fact that her sister, Togawa Keiko, died in 2002 at 37. Her sister was a proper idol and actress who, like I said in the beginning, was the opposite of Togawa Jun in many respects.

As if losing her foil made her into someone else, Togawa Jun has never been the same since.

This will be my last effort post in this thread. I'm going to migrate to the Idol Studies Club for any further posts so we can have a nice home for any discussion on music in general and because this thread is almost used up.
