I watched both P4 and Golden (and some of the alt OVA endings) and I found it dreadfully dull and terrible. Not sure if they fixed in the BD but they covered the Shadows, the true self, in darkness where you couldn't really see them well or their fights. Pacing was terrible. It makes sense in a game but why would you include the time skip mechanic in an anime. There were so many moments where it swells up for drama but then it skips to the calendar and maybe skip a week or more of where that previous scene left off and it kills any sense of tension you felt. It did things that were in the game but doesn't really make for an interesting watch for an anime. They just went through the motions and did it because it was in the game and not if it was good for the animated story. I would have preferred they took elements of the game and condensed into a 13 episode thriller.
Golden seemed promising by going in this new game plus route. Would have been interesting but it was really the Marie show, the new character for the updated rerelease of the game. Some scenes were entertaining but they ruined a lot of the better done scenes of Persona 4, all to praise how great or how much they love Marie is. It added the missing side mission arcs that were missing from the original anime which I enjoyed but as a story, if you only watch Golden, it doesn't stand on it's own. It requires you to watch the previous Persona 4 anime or play the game. It was a glorified special edition that was just the extra feature to a complete series that wasn't included. They better have done better than what Persona 4 turned out to be.

Futaba's awakening scene was recreated shot-for-shot, which is fine by me as there's really no way they could've improved it. Probably one of my favorite scenes from the game. Also the opening is making me wonder if the "big surprise" of the anime is that they're going to do away with Akechi being a psycho traitor altogether and have a different plot twist.

I would think it would get 1 more cour but they did do the multiple animated endings things for Persona 4 before but that had a more definitive conclusion in it's first run than 5 did that the multiple endings were treated as extras. Persona 5 does have more story to tell than 4 and had more effort put into it than 4's first and even golden adaptation.
They should have gotten it all done with in one go like how Jojo did it with part 4 because this ending point was very anticlimactic in presentation, even if everyone already knows how the rest of the story ends if you've played the game.
