Favorite skills and/or weapons in anime and manga.

I've always loved the idea of paper masters like Yomiko and the three sisters, it looks extremely versatile, cool and with a simple logical weakness.

I love characters who, among a cast of supernatural skills, legendary weapons or the arcane, they just have a good pair of legs and fists, even if they're stronger for common human standards. Extra points if they have a rowdy personality, loving to get into fights.

Similarly, Kaban was done in a great manner, where in a land of girls who were previously animals, she didn't have these fantastic innate abilities, Kaban had intelligence and perceptiveness. Not in a super genius way, she just saw a possible answer for the trouble they had.

I'm also a sucker for awesome attack names, so it didn't disappoint at all in that regard.

Not entirely related, but you know what kind of power I really dislike?

Using razor-wire to fight. I've always hated it.

It's usually just so visually bland, and downright lazy.

>>770090

I like it as an OH SHIT moment, but I get what you mean.

The best example of it, though it isn't really wire, was from one of the ninjas from Basilisk, where he used women's hair infused in oils to make it extremely resistant. It was cool to see him actually handle it, rather than never moving his fingers.

I like it when skills are made completely readable to the viewer. Swordskills? Never fought with swords can't relate to them. Martial arts? Nope. Magic, all that means to me is some pretty lights. Evangelion had these huge robots, the pinnacle of human achievement, but they used them just like a normal 14 year old who's business has never been to kill.

somewhat related, I liked in fate/zero how anything berserker grabs can be used as a weapon. I just realized that saito from zero no tsukima has a similar power, how he can use anything that is defined as a weapon like a trained professional.

The ability you're describing is a skill elevated into a Noble Phantasm as a result of the Berserker class. It is the skill:

> Knight of Owner: A Knight Does Not Die with Empty Hands.

Fate is full of cool shit, though.

Unlimited Blade Works is probably the coolest power, though. Even if it's not strictly the best one.

To extend it to visual novels, the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception hit the right balance of edgy and exploitable to me. Exploitable in the sense that there's lots of uses for them, Shiki doesn't always just use them to kill people. Also I like that for such a broken power they're counterbalanced in that using them starts to fry Shiki's brain. It's never a pleasant experience and the development of the power, the eeriness of the dots appear in addition to the lines, the toll it takes on him, and how it's going to eventually kill him, seem a proper tradeoff, elevate the power a bit out of the realm of adolescent edge-fantasy, gives a real sense of fate and human limitation.

I think my favorite powers are the ones that are very versatile and with some brainpower can be used in clever ways (I'm also a big fan of the ripple from Jojo), and aren't too overpowered or, if they are, come with limitations/consequences for using them.

Something as basic as Rakshasa, from a series like Rosario Vampire seems pretty good to me, I am not too fond of abilities centred around one skill such as flight, or pyrokinesis, but combination of bunch of them on the other hand is different stuff.

>a faker that can only copy weapons that will never be as strong as anything original

But there is no rule that says an imitation cannot defeat the original.

That aside, what makes UBW a cooler NP is its nature as a Reality Marble and how specific it is. The Gate of Babylon does more stuff, which makes it more powerful, but not as cool. There's also something inherently less impressive about acquisition than about craftsmanship.

>Magic door that teleports an infinite amount of original weapons from another dimension and wielding many of them at once them with his mind

No there is a limited amount of weapons, whereas UBW is unlimited.

And he doesn't control them with his mind he just fires them off like cannons where Archer can fire them off or use the weapon the way its meant to be used.

Pretty much this. I do appreciate an overblown choreographed chuuni attack when it's interesting but those are the norm, and you don't really see the more brutal, inelegant style of fighting as often. It's probably because they're not as visually interesting to depict, at least not without a lot of frames so you can capture the realism.

 No.770567

Its not a single weapon or skill but all of the magic and esper powers in the index series. I guess Kamachi would be the wielder of these. For magic its been described as bending religious and mythological practices to produce magic power. The better someone reproduces an event or item the more power they can wield. When Touma is not involved, which is rare, magical battles have little to do with magic itself and more to do with how much the players involved understand the religious basis of their enemies power. It ends up being a battle of how quickly the opponents figure out each others weaknesses than a competition of brute strength. The magic side stories are Touma free and really show off the more fun parts of magic battles.

The esper powers are largely similar. Instead of religion and mythology though, science and math take over. Non-Touma battles are big science experiments where the person who figures out a weakness wins in often a stalemate or long battle of attrition. This was demonstrated when Accelerator fought the guy who literally pulled punches to negate Accelerators reflection. The guy was a non-esper but managed to give accelerator a hard time just because he figured out a weakness in how reflection works. The Heavy Object series follows with the Academy city science side. The Objects are wonderful pieces of art and the main characters only survive by finding some weak point.

Note: Everything Kamachi writes has a thick layer of bullshit though, call it the fiction in science-fiction if you like. Its more obvious in esper powers than magic though since religious and mythology education is nowhere near as prevalent as science and math these days.

Trick attacks and techniques, especially if used to surprise the opponent or defeat them in an unconventional ways. Anything from a trick shot, to silly stuff like incapacitating enemies by cutting their clothes off.

Drunken fist. It is underutilized, but it's probably better. Drunken fist is something that can get old really quickly if used often.

Unconventional and gimmick weapons of any kind. Especially drills and hidden weapons.

Zenkichi pretty much.

>Utilizes the fact that he is terrified of big bad to sense his loser presence with his eyes closed.

>Turns his nervous trembling into power.

>Turned an ability that allows him to see from the opponents perspective into an ability that allows him to perfectly understand himself.

>Chose an ability that nullifies all coincidence and luck Devil Style

Old Naruto

>Recreates(Steals) other techniques though clever use of his double body technique.

>Tricks his opponents though multi-layered ruses with said clones/transformations.

I guess I like technician characters with disadvantages who find ways to operate in unfair circumstances. But I've still yet to see necromancers resurrecting fire.

Medaka Box got so insanely meta in the second half that it becomes hard to fully understand what the fuck is even going on at times. Even still, Zenkichi recognizing that he was effectively being pulled into Medaka's power and being sculpted into a protag character with unfair advantage and then choosing to fully negate that with another bullshit broken power that cancels out cliches and tropes so he could compete on his own is.. well, it's fucking amazing.

My favorite would be mechas, but done in a manner like Patlabor, where there are varying types, and most are easily destroyed and damaged. It just seems more realistic that not all mechs would be near indestructable, and that there would be different types of mechs, which would be different in design and how they attack.

>Allahu akbar it

>Make it fall in love with you, and then wait for it to suicide because you're such a weenie

On topic, I love when it's something rather mundane to the universe it's in, but at an absurd level. Like Roy Mustang in FMA. His power is controlling fire, big whoop. Except he dials it up all the way to fucking eleven, and it makes him the one of the most powerful and dangerous characters in the series. It was even better in the first anime, because there was no mystical "Flame Alchemy" that only he knew the secret to. No. The first anime implied that fucking anyone could use alchemy to create flames to a certain degree, but only Mustang was ever that good with it, because he's JUST THAT BADASS.

One problem I have with these overblown choreographed chuuni attacks is how they seem to lack oomph compared to more brutal, straightforward attacking. Another problem with lots of anime combat is it will involve these giant weapons that should by all rights be massively destructive like the Dragonslayer from Berserk. But when it's humans fighting humans with weapons of that caliber it would be too overpowered. So you get these giant weapons that aren't anywhere near as destructive as they ought to be, leaving them feeling like they lack any weight. It's like they're fighting each other with big foam swords, it robs them of impact.
