My first manga I read was Inio Asano's "A Girl on the Shore" a year ago, and I particularly liked it. On a whim, I recently decided to purchase the first two volumes of pic related to read (I know I can read it for free online, but I enjoy owning physical copies of media I enjoy). Holy shit am I torn up inside... Both for Punpun and Yuichi. I sincerely hope this story has an ending that's bittersweet at the very least, I wasn't emotionally prepared for the pain this has caused.
I just bought the next two volumes online, they'll be arriving soon. Anything else by this creator I should read?

You'll have a fun time getting to the end. You missed out on following along with /a/ threads as Hox live-scanlated them back in the day though, those were fun.
>Anything else by Asano?
All of his shit is pretty good and surreal. Punpun's weird fantasy elements are actually pretty toned down compared to his other works.

No kidding? I thought it was pretty wacky, but in a good way. I can only imagine what his other works must be like, in that case.

Punpun's ending is pretty much a bullet right to the soul, and the worst part is that too many people (including many on this very board) completely misinterpreted it because they are fucking stupid and couldn't even see the unmeasurable despair of it.

He sometimes gets compared with Oshimi (the page is from the first chapter of the manga 'Downfall'). He (Oshimi) seems to make all his characters introverted / socially awkward (or autistic if you like). I would recommend 'Boku wa Mari no naka' if you are interested.

The twist is that Sawa actually has schizophrenia, bro.

I like Oshimi's works a little better. I'd say his characters feel more distinct but that's definitely wrong since every manga he writes seems to have the same MC and MC's friends. I guess manga like Aku no Hana and Chi no Wadachi click with me on a deeper psychological level than Punpun, which I couldn't relate to as strongly.

I have insomnia due to social anxiety and chronic depression, I just finished binging the manga in 2 sleepess nights in a row today, I can relate to Punpun, his mom and Yuichi so much it hurts, from the little details and memories from childhood nobody else seems to remember to my unwillingness to relate to others, crippling my everyday life and life choices.
A pathetic selfish self pitying sexually repressed creature with no drive or ambition thats afraid to be hurt by others.
Can't even get the drive to better myself so I don't end up like Punpun

Punpun is a panzy kid and with his wimpy, weaky mind. He thought he stole something very special from yaguchi, while this was happening he totally lost his chance again with Aiko made her wait again forever. He got neglected from his stupidity. No wonder why he's in this bird form with his retarded family of retards, they are all regretful pieces of shit who tried to escape reality so the bird form hides their disgusting facade.
And that's why punpun is a secret murderer. Leaving her with this cultist mother
IT'S ALWAYS WAS PUNPUN'S FAULT NOT AIKO'S!

Did Aiko choose to go out with Yaguchi just so she could get closer to punpun again? just curious.

No.729358

I think it was an attempt to live a normal, happy life, which failed since she knew Yaguchi didn't need her the way she needed him. Recall how, much later on, she says she wants a happy normal life, with shopping and other boring things like that. I see her relationship with Yaguchi as trying to find this with a normal guy, but she realized that she wanted someone who could be as devoted to her as she would be to them. Aka Punpun.
No.729369
>>729358
Yeah, she might wanted that kind of normal life but she still was always the same Aiko. It's weird, from her elementary school days she wanted something crazy as going to kagoshima, since that day she still believes she would go there with that truly distant person. It's crazy because it looked for me as if she still tried to lure punpun. She did say she tried that with Yaguchi though, but it wasn't that special. Despite punpun defied her wish again, she kept waiting this long for him (maybe?), without even abandoning her mother yet. It's like she really just wanted punpun and especially only punpun.
It's just boggles me.

I have a question, when Punpuns uncle Yuuichi has his child, for a panel it shows him crouched down and drawn like a normal human but his son is drawn in the same style as him and punpun. What is this signifying? That Yuuichi is moving on or that he's just passing on himself into his kid. Sorry if its really obvious and I'm just an idiot.

There is an overall moral to the entire thing. There is a reason why nearly every character is shown and developed in depth the way they are. It's not just bad things happening for the sake of bad things happening for a depressing feeling. I really don't want to go into it when you haven't read the whole thing. Where Punpun is in a fucked up romance, Pegasus is in a fucked up battle shounen.
The thing they have in common is that they both are common MCs who have strong moral fiber (autism) that get them into lots of trouble. Pegasus attracts people while Punpun rejects people.
This is the pattern I'm seeing, but I don't quite get what it's trying to say. Granted I speed read the whole thing in a few days about a month ago.
