Wouldn't it be in the villager's best interest to keep the shrine maiden well-fed? No Reimu means no incidents being resolved, and no incidents being resolved usually results in anything from Gensokyo being bathed in nuclear hellfire to the seasons going out of whack to a crazy vampire brat permanently hiding the sun and thus enacting a slow extinction event.
Hells, you would think they would respect her - and the Hakurei bloodline as a whole - quite a bit more.

I like to entertain the thought the villagers normally are rather indifferent or even fearful of Reimu, but will defend her to the death if she's in serious trouble. The Hakurei bloodline has protected the village for quite a while, after all
