Atlantis wasn't sunk. In fact, it probably rose quite a bit. It was destroyed by a spectacular tidal wave caused by a comet impacting the Atlantic ocean. The Eye of Africa, as it's known now, is still visible and fits basically ALL of Plato and Solon's definitions of the place.

Both Plato and the Egyptians agreed that Atlantis was in the Atlantic. I might be wrong, but I think the idea that there's an ancient civilisation hidden under the ice in Antarctica is very recent, it was first suggested in the 20th century. The ancients talked about the godly Hyperboreans, who lived near the North Pole, and the blessed islands, which supposedly were the now-famous tropical islands, but a far as I know they never spoke about Antarctica.

The interesting thing, which people always forget to mention, is that in Plato's story he said that the Atlantean empire had been stopped by the warriors of Athens. I really don't think so, he was probably thinking about the great flood and the antediluvian civilisation/patriarchs mentioned in Genesis. It's worth noting that there have been several floods throughout history, so the one described in the bible may or may not be the same one that sunk Atlantis. It could have been a more recent one that happened in historical times (around the time of Sumer).
