>Trainee Conductor at Puffing Billy Railway in Victoria, Australia

>conducting one day between Cockatoo and Gembrook

>see a black and white dog running along the embankment in the wilderness

>this has never happened before since Railway lines in Australia are fenced off by law

>shrug it off

>a few minutes pass

>pass a grave on the way to Gembrook

>it's the grave of a dog called Jerry

>think nothing of it

>finally get to Gembrook

>I am there for little under an hour

>I enter the station building to get a coffee and tuck in to my lunch

>start to have a look around

>there's little plaques and models of historically significant events

>Jerry the Dog has a little picture frame

>read the info first since I'm curious as to why Jerry was given an honoured burial

>Jerry was a dog who spent his life on the railway track between Upper Ferntree Gully and Gembrook, following the little mountain train its entire distance three or four times each week.

>He was a small black and white dog of doubtful origin and no home ties, radiating the joy of living. The trip was 18 miles of wandering 2 ft 6 in track. Although he often rode on the engine, for a good part of the trip he ran behind, cunningly taking short cuts through the bush when the train got ahead of him.

>I find this quite interesting and the story quite touching

>turns out Jerry died in 1934 in an accident

>look at the little snapshot of Jerry the Dog in the picture frame

>it's the little black and white dog I saw running along the embankment earlier
