First, some background info.
I've lived most of my life in Springfield, Missouri. It's often called a "small town", but only by people from St. Louis or KC. Springfield is small comparatively, but a fully-realized city nontheless. Certainly more country and Bible-belt-y than STL or KC, but still an urban area with plenty of crime and weird shit.
I was talking with a friend from out of town, telling her about the time some stoned edgelords convinced a teacher's daughter she was a vampire queen. She didn't believe me, so I went a researched a bit on it, and while I was at it, I learned about the Feeney case.
Here's what's for sure:
-Jon Feeney, a highschool science teacher went to a teaching conference 90 miles away. Whiel he was gone, his family was murdered.
-His 6-year-old son was strangled with drapery cord.
-His daughter and wife were beaten to death with a pipe.
-Bodies were hidden in the basement
-He got a huge-ass life insurance settlement, plus insurance on around 300(!) items that were stolen.
-His alibi was VERY fucking solid.
-The police were sure he did it, however they had no evidence. Their stay eyewitness was a gas station clerk who claimed to have sold gas to Feeney the night of the murder, but records show that he wasn't even working that night. Prosecution had to go for a character assault, with various women Feeney had affairs with testifying that he was a cheater.
-Unidentified hairs were found on Mrs. Feeney's nightgown
-Most disturbingly, his son had a sexually transmitted case of hepatitis B that did not come from anyone in his family.
A nutjob Evangelical prophesy blog did a piece on it, only noteworthy because of a hyperlink to a local criminal attorney's website that 404'd - Apparently, there were semen stains on Mr. & Mrs. Feeney's bed that did not belong to Mr Feeney.
There are a few unprovable, hearsay things I've gotten from article comments and forum posts from people who knew the guy or were in his class.
-He was 100% sperg. Narcissistic and maybe sociopathic according to a woman claiming to be his post-murder rebound chick
-Bought booze for and played Vampires: The Masquerade with his students.
-Before it happened (not sure on the supposed timeframe here) got weird about his family with his students, passed around photos of his wife and kids, talked about how good of a dad and husband he was, and made sure the whole class knew exactly where and when the teaching conference was.
-Since then, he's fucked off to Brazil (no extradition) and cut off ties.
Guys, I know this happened over 20 years ago, but something smells seriously fucking fishy about all of this. Among commenters claiming to have known the guy, the consensus is that if they guy didn't physically do it, he had some hand in it. His suspiciously perfect alibi, general sperginess, and sketchy insurance payoffs certainly make it seem likely, but what about the kid's hepatitis, and supposed semen stain? That makes me think it wasn't a hit. If any of you guys have any suggestions or moral support to offer I'd appreciate it, as I'm going to the library at some point to look through newspaper archives - pic related was all I could find before a pay-wall.
