Hey /x/, what's the last horror movie you watched? Tell us a little about it (no spoilers though!).

For me it's The Witch. I saw someone here on 8chan recommend it and the trailer looked interesting enough, so I decided to give it a try and for once I wasn't disappointed. This is one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen, and it made me understand why people used to be afraid of witches.

Basically it's about a family of devout Christians who are forced to move out of the town and to a rural part of the country, in the middle of nowhere. They're decent, hard-working people but unfortunately for them there's a witch living in the forest not far from their house, and she won't leave them alone.

It's a simple plot but very well executed. I guess you could say it's a character-centric movie because it focuses on how the characters try their best to deal with a shitty situation, and the actors are great. The witch never says anything and we rarely see her, and in my opinion that's part of what makes her feel so menacing. She feels genuinely evil, completely devoid of any humanity. You'll see what I mean when she makes her first appearance.

This isn't a "horror movie" to watch with your family. It's disturbing in more ways than one. At times it feels like the director wanted you to believe that this really happened, or could have happened, and no other movie has made me feel like that before (except maybe for a couple of scenes in "The entity").

I agree, The Witch was one of the better movies last year. You could tell they really tried hard to get good child actors, which is really rare. The movie could have been ruined if the kids were the typical shit that most movies/TV Shows get.

I think the last horror movie I saw was the new Blair Witch. It's about the brother of the girl from the first one going into the woods when what looks like her footage appears on YouTube. He goes with his girlfriend, their two token black friends, and two redneck stereotypes to try and find her. The movie is fairly typical for modern horror movies with a simple plot and found footage shaky-cam. I found it pretty boring, not much happens, and the ending is very unsatisfying and predictable. There weren't any risks taken in the making of this movie, and it really shows. It won't offend anybody, but it won't entertain them either.

If you want good, recent, horror movies try The Witch and It Follows. Also, Arrival, while not horror, is another good movie I think /x/ would enjoy.

Just watched it since was in the mood for a movie. It was pretty cool, but the only thing off was how casual they all seemed about everything. I know people back then were more used to death and stuff, but still, they were void of emotions too much.

Movie title reminded me to watch Season of the Witch. I heard that was good so I'll soon see.

Got on netflix after reading this post last night and watched The Witch.

It really was fantastic. Refreshing.

After I finished watching it I was searching all over for something similar because I didn't want the movie to end basically, and now I just want more of the same.

If anyone knows of something similar, please share it.

Even any wiki articles about protestant and puritan witchery and beliefs would be good.

I'm not having any luck. Just finding articles discussing the different kinds of witches and shit, but I'm more interested in the beliefs and folklore of the folk of the 1600's.

Ok here are some good ones:

Under the Shadow

The Wailing

Shelley

Southbound

Always Shine

They Look Like People

The Monster

The Invitation

These are the only good ones I could find from 2016, apart from Witch, which was already mentioned

Just watched "As Above So Below" on Netflix.

I expected it to be a shitty B movie ripping off Descent. Was pleasantly surprised.

Rise of the Tomb Raider completely ripped this movie off. [The following are not spoilers, they only touch on the backstory that comes up in the first 20 minutes of the movie and the game both.]

>Young britbong girl that speaks like 6 languages, 2 of them dead languages

>Also martial arts

>Her father was an archeologist or some shit that killed himself after losing it from years of obsessive searching for….

>You guessed it… a mythical key to immortality.

>Daughter becomes, you guessed it… a tomb raider.

>Girl is fearless and determined and bull-in-a-china-shop in her pursuit of whatever she might be after

>Blindly drags close friends and strangers alike into dangerous situations in order to get what she wants

The actress in As Above So Below, Perdita Weeks, is so similar in appearance, voice, and accent to Lara in Rise of the Tomb Raider, I was convinced for the entire movie that she WAS the same actress used in the game. I googled after and couldn't believe she wasn't.

Anyways, if you liked the version of Lara in Tomb Raider games that came out between 2000-2010 you'll probably like this movie (The girl in the movie looks and sounds just like the most recent TR game but is written more like the older versions of Lara).

I've just finished watching The Monster. The main characters are a young girl and her alcoholic, chain smoking mother. Much of the movie focuses on their difficult relationship, which is both a strength and a weakness. A strength, because they're both good actresses (especially the girl) and the relationship is believable. Sometimes with horror movies, the characters are so poorly developed you don't really know who they are, but that's not the case here. A weakness, because it feels like the director just wanted to make a movie about a mother-daughter relationship and only added the monster as a subplot.

The monster itself is kind of cool. There's no CGI here, it's all made with old-school practical effects, and it works pretty well.

The main flaw of this movie in my opinion is that it's a little bit slow. I don't mind slow movies if they have interesting dialogues, but there are no memorable quotes here. It probably could have been a little faster.

Overall, I give it 6/10. Nothing special, but fans of monster movies will appreciate it.

Okay, so today I've rewatched Dark Water.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382628/

Pros: It's a slow, dark, rainy, comfy movie. Jennifer Connelly is a fantastic actress, and also she's absolutely beautiful and her character's interactions with her daughter are very cute. The acting in general is good, the characters are interesting, the music is appropriate, and it's a visually appealing movie. There's a strong psychological component that gives it a depth that most horror movies don't have.

Cons: For a horror movie, it's not very scary. To be fair, it doesn't try very hard to scare you like most horror movies tend to do. Not much happens. But I just don't find ghost movies scary, so maybe it's just me.

Overall, it's a solid movie, although it probably won't become your favourite. I would rate it 8/10.

I saw a few movies recommended on /tv/ yesterday, so I downloaded the ones that seemed most interesting and watched them.

#1: 'Hidden'. A family has been hiding in a bunker for a year, because the surface world is haunted by the 'breathers', mysterious creatures that hate humans and kill them mercilessly. Sounds good? Well, too bad, because this is one of the most boring movies I've ever watched. Almost nothing happens for entire duration of the movie, I couldn't care less about watching a family trying to survive in a bunker, and the ending could have been written by M. Night Shyamalan. So it was a disappointment. I only recommend it if you like movies about bunkers.

#2: 'The House of the Devil'. It's set in the 80s, and the music/style tries to emulate movies of that era. A girl who needs money fast accepts a job as a babysitter. But when she arrives at the house, the owner tells her that actually she'll have to watch his old mother while he's away… except she doesn't, and she gets $400 just for spending a few hours alone in the house. The guy is creepy but she accepts anyway. Oh and there's going to be a total lunar eclipse that night, but don't worry about that. So you can see where this is going (the movie tells you right at the beginning that it's about satanic cults murdering random people). The problem is that this movie is even more boring than the first. It's so fucking slow and the dialogue is not interesting at all. There's very little action, and even that is boring and predictable. I only recommend this movie if you like watching girls do nothing for 90 minutes or if you're a fan of this type of movies.

#3: 'The Innkeepers'. A guy and a girl work in a old hotel that's about to be closed down. A woman killed herself in the basement of the hotel a century ago and the owners tried to hide it because it would be bad publicity. The guy and the girl are interested in paranormal phenomena and ghost hunting. The girl is really cute, the guy is a nerd (eww, gross!) but somehow they're friends. The hotel surprisingly gets a few guests, some strange things happen, the girl gets scared a lot. And this is one of the problems with this movie. I love watching cute girls getting scared, but not in a horror movie. It ruins the mood. Cute and creepy don't mix very well. The scary parts are not scary at all, but the main characters are kinda interesting, which makes the movie enjoyable. The ending caught me off guard, I wasn't expecting that. Overall this is the best of the 3 and the only movie I can recommend to anyone.

I've watched Kong: Skull Island today. Technically not a horror movie, but still, it's a monster movie. Unfortunately, this movie sucks. Kong himself is cool, but the other monsters are not interesting at all. None of the monsters are scary, or make you feel small (like the kaijus from Pacific Rim).

There are too many human characters, it's like they decided to waste time by giving every actor a small part instead of having a few strong, well-developed characters. As a result, the characters feel shallow and you feel nothing for them. This means that scenes that are supposed to be emotional, are actually quite boring. There are too many 'emotional' scenes for an action movie.

The music lacks a strong theme. The plot is extremely simple. The dialogue is nothing special. I regret wasting 2 hours of my life watching this piece of crap.

Trailers can be deceiving. It definitely has potential, but there's also the risk that they turned Pennywise into just another generic scary clown. The original was creepy as hell, this one looks like it's aiming for OMG SUPER SCARY DID YOU SEE THAT, with jumpscares and all that. If I had to guess, I'd say it will be a success, but it won't make a lasting impression like the original did. Twenty years from now, there won't be adults talking about how this movie traumatised them as a kid.

Yesterday I finally found a streaming of Evolution on https://gomovies.to/ so I watched it.

It's a French film (with English subtitles) from 2016. The story is about a group of boys who live on an island with their 'mothers'. Supposedly the boys are sick and they need constant medical attention. One of the boys, Nicolas, doesn't believe what his 'mother' tells him and starts to investigate.

I won't spoil the rest, and even if I wanted to, I couldn't, because this is one those films that leaves many questions unanswered. So if you like films where everything is explained at the end, this isn't for you. There's very little dialogue, just the bare minimum. It's not a film for dumb people.

Although it's not based on Lovecraft, and it's not a story about cosmic horror, the atmosphere is very lovecraftian, so I would recommed it to anyone who likes that sort of thing. It's also a visually beautiful and comfy film and the acting is good. I would give it a 8/10.

This will probably end up being one of the best horror movies of the year. The alien is different from anything we have seen so far, and IMHO it's scarier (although less iconic) than the xenomorphs, because it's pretty much unstoppable, it's smarter and feels more 'alien' due to its shape-shifting capabilities.

I finally watched Romero's Dawn of the Dead last night.

it goes without saying that some of the effects in it (especially towards the ending) are amazing, but other than that and it's iconic shopping mall setting i thought it was kinda mediocre.

the beginning was pretty alright, the eviction scene did a pretty good job at capturing the insanity and mass hysteria that a zombie apocalypse would entail the pablo escobar lookin guy who kept going on about killing niggers was kinda weird but it was cool seeing him get killed by his squad

the mall scenes were pretty good overall but the obvious social commentary got old relatively quickly

the zombies looked pretty low budget when they weren't eating someone, they looked like the special ed class got blue paint all over them, but i may only have a problem with this because i watched Zombi 2 the day before so my expectations were probably a bit too high.

Overall, a good movie. but it's influence exceeds it's quality.

i would, however, HIGHLY recommend that everyone watch Zombi 2 because that movie is fucking awesome

Saw the new It in the theater. I thought it was pretty well done; the kids could all act, Pennywise was genuinely creepy and disturbing (but I think Tim Curry made him feel more actively malevolent; the new Pennywise just feels like a predator hunting for food, not something that actively enjoys tormenting children before eating them).

Probably the most disturbing part of the movie was the dozen niggers sitting behind us who reeked of weed. They were shrieking and cussing throughout the entire movie. Then right in the middle I heard one holler, "hey nigga, don't pee in here!" I turned around and saw one nigger, stoned out of his mind, pissing all over another nigger in the row in front of him.

Last night I watched Thale, a horror movie made in Norway. I had high expectations because the movie is Norwegian and is based on nordic mythology, just like Troll Hunter, which in my humble opinion is one of the best horror movies of the last 20 years.

Unfortunately it was a disappointment. Everything from the acting to the writing to the photography felt like the work of a beginner, very generic and uninspired. There was no suspence whatsoever. The whole movie takes place in one location, and it's not even a beautiful place. The only part that left a good impression on me were the special effects, which were surprisingly well done, especially when you consider that this is a low budget movie.

This could have been a nice little movie in the hands of a better director/writer/producer. The story had potential, and it could have been developed in a number of different ways, but for lack of talent and resources, it wasn't. It's like instead of the finished movie, we were shown a prototype. Don't waste your time on this.

The last horror movie I watched was The Babadook. That one spooked me pretty good. It's about a young boy that has a book with a monster in it (kinda like that Grover "The Monster at the End of this Book" thing but actually with a scary monster in it) and then it makes the kid go a bit mental and the mum goes a bit mental and it's pretty good at building the suspense without wasting it all on jump-scares and violin shrieks.

Are there any good movies similar to Signs and Close Encounters of the Third Kind? I feel like watching something more on the mysterious side. Early X-Files was great but I wasn't a fan on their take of grays with the whole popping into toxic green goo. I can't think of anything close to these. Thinking about watching Cargo, Dark Skies, Hunter Prey, Fire in the Sky, or The Omega Code. I didn't care for Signs when I first watched it but I should rewatch it since I haven't seen it since it released.

the whole movie had the worst sound design I have ever heard.

>turn volume down to avoid physical pain from loud sound effects

>can't hear anyone

>turn up volume to hear what they say

>SHALALALALAALALALALLALALALA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! witch music makes my ears bleed

the whole movie depended on scary chanting music, and there was nothing that scary in the whole movie. it was gross and sad but not scary. the people were great actors though, but the movie was shit.

>they look like people

>some dude goes to his friends house

It seems like we could be getting an expanded Lovecraft universe. Good news or bad? (Who am I kidding? It will be shit.)

https://nerdist.com/lovecraft-universe-barbara-crampton-castle-freak-remake/

>We live in an age where every movie studio with a known genre property wants to create their own shared cinematic universe to rival the juggernaut (ha!) of Marvel Studios. It doesn’t always work, but the allure is strong, especially for comics and novel properties that already have a huge shared roster of characters. One writer who was on the cutting edge of this was early 20th Century horror and weird fiction author H.P. Lovecraft, who created his own mythos of gods, aliens, and creatures simply because he wanted to, never expecting they’d be read by anyone.

>Evidently, the wheels are in motion for an “Expanded Lovecraft Universe,” though not on the scale we might have hoped. Actress Barbara Crampton, who starred in Re-Animator and From Beyond, which kicked off the Lovecraft movie mini-boom of the ’80s, tweeted that a remake of the 1995 shot-on-video chiller Castle Freak is happening, and that it will see the beginning of a shared universe of Lovecraft characters.

Ended up watching 'A Quiet Place' recently. A family has to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity and most life on earth has been wiped out by a race of monsters/aliens that hunt and kill everything they hear - and they have an incredibly sensitive sense of hearing. The few people left alive have to try their hardest to be very silent, and can only communicate through sign language.

So, did I like it? Yes. The creatures' design is not too original, but they're deadly and they look terrifying and that's what matters most. The special effects are pretty good. There are quite a few 'oh shit' moments, and enough horror to make most /x/philes happy. As a bonus, the movie is also free of leftist propaganda. The family is white and old-fashioned; the father is smart, brave, kind and competent; the wife is also brave, loving and supportive; the kids love their parents and support each other.

By modern standards, this is about as good as a horror movie can be. Recommended.

I find it interesting that movies that portray Christians always portray them as nicey nice people who are powerless, weak and vulnerable.

The Christians I hang with, all the witches are afraid of them and avoid them, or come to them for salvation through Jesus Christ.

But, what can you expect from an industry run by people who sodomize infants?

True Christianity fears nothing, and is vulnerable to very little, ESPECIALLY a witch, and is, by far, the most powerful way to live.

But, the movie industry, run by Satan as it is, will, very very rarely, ever potraty the true power that we have. Why do you think Trump won this election? Because the pagans and heathens sacrificed enough children to ensure his victory?

Because the same bunch of atheist losers that run the show just randomly changed their minds?

We, the Christians, have been praying to the only living God, in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, the only means by which any man can see God, and the efforts paid off.

Most churches are led by people who are very well paid to mislead the flock, ensure the flow of children proceeds into the mouth of molech, and to keep the church powerless.

But, to assume that true Christianity is reflected by the Pope, or the average fornication plaza that is the neighborhood church is erroneous. These people are lukewarm or cold, they are not living according to the Bible. One way to tell is to ask if they show any evidence of "All who live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."

No persecution? No resistance? Not living godly in Christ Jesus.

The average movie is as accurate in depicting Christianity as the average newscast is in depicting the criminal demographic.

I love the witch I got a poster of it in my room. Last horror movie I watched though was Hereditary. It was my 3rd watch but I still get creeped the fuck out by it. I remember going to the theater with my friends to see it when it was released and it was really the first movie to make my jaw drop and just put me in a state of awe. Me and 3 of my bros all go in the theater ready for a good movie and scare after we watched all the trailers and read a few articles on it, but it was nothing like we expected. I remember before we went we planned on getting drunk and just playing vidya until we passed out but after it was over we all just turned to each other and we’re like “alright well I’m just gonna go home.” It truly was one of the most fucked up things I’ve watched on screen.

Small plot synopses: a family experiences the death of their grandmother who was pretty strange in life, setting off a downward spiral leaving many family members dead in order to bring a powerful demon to the mortal world.

No spoilers but the one scene where the one person dies after the party really fucked me up. I’m personally really looking forward to the remake of nosferatu and the movie “the lighthouse”, it’s gonna be shot in black and white 35mm and stars thomasin from the witch.

Finally got around to see the 2018 Mark Gatiss/BBC Ghost Story for Christmas entitled The Dead Room today, which >>43682 alerted me of a while back. I have no doubt Gatiss is a great admirer of M. R. James, but this was without a doubt the worst Ghost Story for Christmas ‘entry’ I have seen -- ever. The only good bit of dialogue is lifted directly from an essay M. R. James wrote on how to write ghost-stories. The worst thing about it is that the story is plagiarising Martin’s Close by James!

Aubrey is obviously Squire Martin, his gay lover is the mentally retarded(?) Anne, both of whom end up in a body of water. The recording studio is the court room of the original, and, in the context of the story, Tara & Joan might be considered a poor man’s Judge Jeffreys. The folk song whistled by Judge Jeffreys in the court room in the original story is even mirrored here as Tara’s mobile ringtone! As the story progresses Aubrey gradually becomes tormented by his past in the recording studio, just as Squire Martin is in the court room when he stands trial for murder.

So, not only does it fall completely flat, but it is a flaccid uncredited retelling of M. R. James story. Very disrespectful!

Got around to watching the ITV 1979 adaptation of M. R. James’ Casting the Runes, directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark yesterday, and that was a very pleasant viewing experience. I had heard some people say it wasn’t any good, and since it isn’t counted as one of the ‘entries’ in A Ghost Story for Christmas, it is isn’t given much attention. That is really sad, because this turned out to be one of my all-time favourite TV adaptations of James’ stories. The changes done to the story didn’t bother me at all -- setting it in the present day (1979), and changing the location from London to Yorkshire worked really well. Changing the sex of the main character also worked for me, as I always find women more easily upset, nervous and scared, and a male character might more easily fight back instead of fleeing, or daring to confront the unknown than a woman.

The scene where Prudence Dunning comes home to her apartment at night, and goes to bed, only to get a terrible shock, is quite similar to the original story, and again the changes made works perfectly. We also get a brilliant set up to this, where Karswell is setting this scare up. Perhaps a nod to James’ arachnophobia?

The opening shots of the wintery Yorkshire countryside are really atmospheric and sets the mood perfectly. The death of John Harrington was very well done, and we get just a eerie glimpse of whatever has come for him.

My only gripes with it was that when we see the writing on the slip of paper it is obviously written in the Greek Alphabet, not runes, and the characters still call it ‘runic’. That change seems strange and unnecessary IMHO.

The scene where Karswell’s head is superimposed over the celestial globe was a bit awkward, but not worse than the scene in Twin Peaks, where Josie’s face appears on the wooden drawer knob/handle.

Criminally underrated ghost story that deserves a watch IMHO.

The 1998 movie was pretty good, for what it was - a story about a giant mutated lizard having the time of its life in New York. It just wasn't Godzilla.

The 2014 movie was terrible. Godzilla barely had any screen time, and the story focused too much on the human side of the plot. The other monsters were underwhelming. The fights were disappointing.

Shin Godzilla (2016) was a breath of fresh air. It actually made Godzilla seem scary.

I had to watch it after someone called it 'horrifying' but despite being only 15 minutes long, I couldn't even bring myself to finish it. It begins with a man looking at the moon and using a razor to slice a woman's eyeball - as a thin cloud passes in front of the moon: genius! Then it cuts to a different scene with some faggot riding his bike around the town, falling off and dying. He gets rescued by a woman who takes him to her apartment. For some reason he tries to rape her and destroys the apartment in the process. All the while, a music fit for a carnival plays in the background. This doesn't even qualify as horror, let alone as horrifying.

>the reflecting skin

This is actually a pretty decent film in my opinion, I was pleasantly surprised. Except, it's not a horror movie at all - it's a drama, extremely sad and at times hard to watch. The main character is a boy who lives with his parents in a house in the middle of nowhere. His mother verbally and physically abuses him, and his father is a gasoline-drinking homosexual. The boy has a couple of friends and they spend their time capturing frogs, and blowing them up after having inflated them like baloons. The boy becomes convinced that one of their female neighbors is a vampire, because he hears about vampires from his idiot father and the woman does and says some strange things.

I won't spoil anything, but there's never any scary moment or anything that would suggest the director was trying to make a horror movie. Like I said, it's just a very tragic and serious story. Quite beautiful from an aesthetic point of view and it reminded me of my own childhood. I watched it on Youtube.

I'll try some of their other recommendations in the next few days, but judging from what I've seen so far, I don't think /film/ even likes horror movies per se, they just like 'horror' movies that in their opinion are well made from a technical perspective, or obscure and original enough to appeal to their hipster instincts.
