What are fullchan's favourite shmups?

What are the mechanics that make you shit blood?

Are you a scrub that's never 1cc'd a single fucking thing?

I've been playing Psikyo's catalogue relentlessly lately. Not much progress with anything but Sengoku Aces, but tonnes of fun has been had.

Also, that looks like a cropped picture of Robo Aleste? I've never beaten that one with any number of credits. The difference in difficulty is considerable.

I like the blue orbs because… anything to take extra hits for me. But the lighting is just so damn satisfying to use.

And yeah, it's Robo Aleste and its ramped-up difficulty.

Sengoku-period mechs are best mechs. More games need to give Nobunaga giant robots.

PC master race reporting in.

My favorite so far is Tyrian 2000. Crunchy sound effects and mega-spacey music by Alexander Brandon and Andreas Molnar, goofy sci-fi epic across four episodes told partly through collectable data cubes and some well-drawn cutscenes, and loads of upgrades, customization, and secret levels. All around great retro shit, it takes me back.

This is true. Once you beat the final stage you start over from the beginning. Great game.

tiger-heli loops infinitely like most toaplan games, but you've technically won after beating the first loop (4 stages)..
"you can't win" is a difficulty thing, not literal - try beating tatsujin ou (not truxton 2 which is easier) and i guarantee you won't make it past stage 3..

Not really, really retro but I want to talk about R-type final. It's so awesome and disappointing at the same time. It's addictive to get all the 101 ships, but the slowdown in most stages is so bad it becomes retarded and boring to go through. Is there a way to speed it up via emulation? I feel it could have been one of the greatest shmups of all time with some sensible coding.

Also my favorite shmup is mars matrix, it has the right rythm for me and is the only hard game I've ever managed to 1cc. I feel it hits all the right spots for shmup gameplay: fast, unforgiving but still gives you the tools to get better at it. The pre-rendered art style is kind of shitty but the gameplay is spotless.

I think this is really important.

There's many things I don't like about Strikers 1945 III but, for me, its curtains allow just enough wiggle room to make surviving them give me a sense of accomplishment; rather than feeling like I got through on dumb luck.

tl;dr: I like babby-mode curtain shooters.

>The game AI is the most interesting aspect of Zanac and will make every game experience different due to it's sophistication. The AI adapts to many aspects of the player, for example what weapons the player has and what level they are. Most importantly, if the player fires more, the AI reacts by sending more powerful enemies. The AI is designed to exploit any potential weakness in the player's current weapons and also how much of a threat the player presents due to the amount of shots fired and the power of the current weapons. This means that very few things are static in the game. The AI's difficulty can be lowered under several conditions, one being the destruction of a SART, a type of enemy that occasionally files along the sides of the screen then darts back up. On that note, the AI reacts very violently on the use of the Field Shutter and will send out many waves of enemies in an attempt to destroy the shield and the player.

How common was this kind of TECHNOLOGY in retro shumps?

I'm a little new to the genre, but so far I'm liking Dragon Blaze.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

Out of the dozens (probably 100+) of shmups I've played, the only ones that could hold my attention for more than 10 minutes were Super R-Type, Touhou (mostly PCB and IN), PowerManga and Chromium BSU. And the latter 2 only due to needing some diversion during long nights of writing Linux programs.

I'm kind of new to retro stuff, but I've run into a problem with a certain game and this is the best place to ask.

I got Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV) recently and I would like to play it, but every time I start a level (and when I start level select), it's as though the dpad was glued down right. Other games work fine and I tested the game in the store I bought it from, so I know it works good.

The only thing I can think it might be is my controller, but I only have one at the moment so I can't quite test that out very well. I have tried starting levels and unplugging the controller just before they begin, but the result was the same in that my ship would just fly straight to the edge of the screen.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it's your controller, bub. I haven't played LF IV in ages - are there any options screens where it can bug out? It'd be mighty strange if it was only doing it during levels.

It's on all the menus. The thing is I can hit left and it registers it.

I'll get another controller but I wonder why this is the only controller where I've encountered this problem

Is there an image compilation of Shoot'em Ups/shmups/shooting games/etc? I have been using them to cross off games I already own, like a kind of checklist.
