Because they're really monotonous. And because it's usually people who have somehow triggered the copy protection which doubled the encounter rates.

Because there's so damn many of them. The way the game calculates random encounters is super shitty and primitive. You can literally take one step and end up in a battle, win, take another step and immediately end up in another battle.

To put it into reference, the first final fantasy game has a ~25 step minimum before the next encounter. Mother has none

It doesn't help that you have very limited combat abilities for the first few hours of the game, especially before Magicant. Ninten has no offensive PSI, making most battles before you get Lloyd unnecessarily frustrating and/or long

It's because the game is designed that way. Very intentionally, it's an uphill battle against all odds. Seriously, have you even played the game?

Mother 3 is pretty fucking good at hammering that point home. Some people die, but it is for the "good of all" bullshit, but it is supposed to be unfair and hard. You personally grinding for levels or gear does not matter. Play the game as it is. Maybe the grind was supposed to be horrible part of the story?

I disagree. I think that games should be fun even if they're an uphill struggle. Honestly Mother 1 and 2 were much might lighthearted and heartfelt experiences. I didn't have a problem with the encounter rate in Mother 1; hell it's one of the several games I consider to be a masterpiece. It's definitely not to just make the game seem like a struggle because I doubt that was the intention for Mother 1 at all; it's just the game being an NESRPG.
