"Fun but fairly forgettable" is exactly how I'd describe it. I remember enjoying myself while playing it when it first came out but fuck if I remember anything specific about it. With all the other Final Fantasies there are always parts of them that stuck out to me and I remember clearly, but 9 is an enigma.
That being said, I do recall always feeling really cozy while playing it, which makes it worth coming back to I suppose, but there was nothing about the game that really stuck out. It wasn't a bad game but it wasn't terribly great, either. It just was.

I actually think there's some truth to that. Square just realized what cashcows "fandom" games are and, comparatively, there's not much of an audience for fantasy games with an unsexy cast. 9 seemed to be Square's last shot at a fantasy setting in line with games 1-6 before they realized that they had created an entirely new audience with 7 and 8. A new audience that wanted handsome husbandos and beautiful waifus.
