Why is this so underrated, yet so good?

And why doesn't Square return to the charming fantasy setting instead of giving us pseudo-realistic settings with a boy-band enoutrage??

Am I the only person that found it fairly forgettable? Like, I remember it being fun, but not amazing like 6 or memorably bizarre like 7. I played through it at release and never particularly wanted to go back to it.

>underrated

It was fairly popular when it came out.

>And why doesn't Square return to the charming fantasy setting

Because the Square that used to make such games no longer has the people capable of doing them, the new Square cannot return to making things it never did and as such they just piggy ride on the biggest titles while seeking newer user bases in this case the fujos.

"Fun but fairly forgettable" is exactly how I'd describe it. I remember enjoying myself while playing it when it first came out but fuck if I remember anything specific about it. With all the other Final Fantasies there are always parts of them that stuck out to me and I remember clearly, but 9 is an enigma.

That being said, I do recall always feeling really cozy while playing it, which makes it worth coming back to I suppose, but there was nothing about the game that really stuck out. It wasn't a bad game but it wasn't terribly great, either. It just was.

>they just piggy ride on the biggest titles while seeking newer user bases in this case the fujos

I actually think there's some truth to that. Square just realized what cashcows "fandom" games are and, comparatively, there's not much of an audience for fantasy games with an unsexy cast. 9 seemed to be Square's last shot at a fantasy setting in line with games 1-6 before they realized that they had created an entirely new audience with 7 and 8. A new audience that wanted handsome husbandos and beautiful waifus.

I've never played FF before, only tried the classic NES/SNES entries recently and ended up losing interest in each one of them. After seeing this thread I thought of giving IX a try and I must say it's pretty fun… The story and characters are hilarious, the gameplay is fluid and the setting is comfy. What entry should I play finishing this?

>why does corporation xyz do a instead of b?

"because their marketing execs deem it more profitable" is the answer about 99% of the time.

If you enjoyed this you may want to work your way backwards and play ff8 and then ff7, after that you may jump into ff X and x-2.

>Why is this so underrated, yet so good?

The hype was deflated after FF8 and a lot of casual fans bailed. It's a captain obvious statement but it's true. Randoms had no expectations and would rather save the money for a PS2 while replaying FF7.

First game I ever pre-ordered, and among my favorites for PS1. Those were the golden years for Squaresoft, this game is very underrated. The blend of technology and fantasy was flawless, great richness of characters and locations, loads of side quest - the chocobo treasure hunting was great fun. FF9's soundtrack is still one I listen to (not like it's my only CD but is in the mix).

Honestly, I have forgotten the specifics, in the storyline and otherwise, but that will make it more enjoyable to replay someday when I have the time. Looking forward to it

>underrated

No, it's overrated. The game has 20 seconds long loading times before AND after EVERY battle. The reason this game has a cult following is because it was 'retro', you even said it:

>charming fantasy setting
