Coolrom got plundered by the Big N of Nintendo console Roms. Vnes as far as I know is gone.

To my knowledge, www.Vnes.com is still down. It might have indeed been nintendo that forced them to shut down, or it was bankruptcy. Care to name others that got shut down, or at least substantially plundered of roms?

Coolrom since Nintendo fuckery, then Square, then had to use its own downloader to grab shit. All in all, it fucked up entirely.
Probably wasn't a good idea to have a twitter account showcasing downloaded ROMs in hindsight.

Well i used to know a lot but it turns out i forgot their names, most where instead abandoned due to low traffic.
Also all these cool emulation forums of around Y2K, along with websites full of hentai pics, all gone, i think the internet is suffering its own centralization, those who can't keep traffic to pay the rent are slowly being pushed out of the internet

Oh, and there is a rom that VNES won't run, no matter how many times I attach it to the emulator program. that rom is the Chinese bootleg port of FFVII. Some Sachen roms might also fall into this category.

Also i want to name The IsoZone because ever since they started owning that shitty filesharing website , they have pretty much made all downloads have a low speed and constant disconnections, unless you pay
I don't know if Snesorama had any changes but i used to get some rare PS2 isos there and the last time i used it i couldnt find anything
Another one was Romulation, who offered a great service but then started to give in to requests for taking roms and isos down

I used iNES and MasterGear for a long time, because there wasn't much else for Linux.
What game is that picture from btw?

Fuck I used rom-world.com in the 90s, and it's still around. Same Netscape Navigator era left-hand nav bar and everything. Zophar.net's still around, too. I think that's badass. And even though we give it flak, the fact that if you posted a faq to gamefaqs in the late 90s and it's still there (IN SOME CASES UNDER THE SAME URL) is pretty amazing. DMG Ice (devoted to handhelds) is still around. I panicked when I saw their 1000s of reviews were missing, but it turns out they put it into a zip file.
Some of the larger sites like Gamespot (=CNet but formerly part of Ziff Davis media iirc which also published EGM magazine) and IGN have older reviews and previews available, but a lot of the articles and cultural snapshots such as Q&As with their 90s writers, have been scrubbed. I'm pretty sure that IGN's Lexicon originated as an actually very informative pre-Wikipedia reference source that the IGN64 authors Matt and Peer put together just because they felt like it. Dan Gerst or whatever his name was who got pressured to leave Gamespot for giving bad reviews to big-money games, used to have a reader mailbag section iirc.
