What's the deal with this game and why does it get so much hate?

I havent played it yet, but from ehat I heard the "leveling system" is broken. You gain skill points instead of actual levels and it broken by just attack select then cancel in combat. I think. I dont knoe how story wise it holds up or if there is anything else.

I suppose the grinding system, it sort of worked grinding levels in FF1 as it was a first time experience, at least for me, but when you happen to not only have to grind your stats but also your magics and weapons skill individually with no other reward than not dying later in the game, well you just start feeling it's more like a tedious chore

I found the story to be mildly interesting but the final chain of events is just too hammered together.

thank god for turbo mode in emulators otherwise i'd never had finished it.

The leveling system kills the whole thing. It's a shame, since II probably had one of the best Final Fantasy villains.

It would be great if there was a hack or something that fixed the leveling.

It's the only FF game I've played and I thought it was fun.

The leveling system is tedious but it's not the major offender. The major offender in my opinion is the way stats worked. Defense for instance:

Defense gets leveled up as you take hits, along with HP and helps you reduce damage. However it has nothing to do with evading hits.

Agility gets leveled up as you dodge hits and starts so low it's near impossible to get to a decent level without actively grinding for it while using agility buffing spells. Even then you'll wonder if you're doing something wrong because the stat doesn't want to level up.

Evading hits doesn't sound like a big deal but in later parts of the games there are many enemies who start hitting for a percentage of your maximum health. Even if your defense is as high as it can be and you have 9999 hit points, your shit agility will make you get hit for 87.5% of those hitpoints in worst case scenarios. If enemies focus one character he's done for. That was the most frustrating aspect of the game for me.

Other aspects that I found frustrating to a lesser extent are the 'ultimate weapons' quest. Unless you're using a guide there's little chances of ever going so far with the characters that you have to use in soul of rebirth, leaving them in a near useless state by the time you have to use them. As for the main cast, you're better off making them all dual wield masamunes and fully equip them with genji armor. (Which, by the way, won't even get hinted at).

On a very lesser extent, the magic system felt useless. Cure is the only spell you'll get to 16 while retaining your sanity. Attack spells do worthless damage and take forever to level up and Minwu dies for nothing since the magic he unseals is horrible in every aspect. That magic, known as the ultimate non-elemental attack magic, actually draws its power from how leveled up your OTHER spells are. So if you want to hit like a truck with it, your whole magic menu has to be filled with lv16 spells which is a grind that would make anyone quit the game.

It's a FF game, there's a lot of reasons to hate them.

A big one being that below the story; they're extremely shallow and repetitive.

I disagree. Yes there are those in the series that come of as shallow in some says, especially most of the titles in the series after X.

Shit is so cash. Just got into World 3 for the first time, rolling with a:

-Gladiator Bartz, previously mastered Knight & Mystic Knight

-Black Mage Lenna, previously mastered White Mage

-Samurai Krile, previously mastered Chemist, Monk and Berserker

-Dragoon Feris, previously mastered Thief & Ninja

And everyone's mastered Blue Mage, because that makes learning Blue Magic far less of a headache.

First off, consider getting the Mod Of Balance Hack. Makes magic leveling more balanced.

Here's some other strats:

-Have Minwu cast Shell+Wall+Protect+Barrier in pretty much every battle in the Unknown Palace. The first two increase your Mag Def, the third ups your Phys Def, the last ups your Spec Def. Enemies there LOVE to cast Lv8 spells like Death and Curse against the whole party. And for anyone who might be confused, levels of spells aren't like FFV, where any character whose level is a multiple will be affected. Here, spell level just means how powerful it is/likely it is to connect. A Level VIII Death spell can mean a instant Game Over if you've not cast Shell+Wall, and even then, a character might die.

-In battles with 'easier' enemies, constantly use spells; the aforementioned Shell+Wall+Barrier+Protect, and also Cure, Life and Esuna. In Soul Of Rebirth, you simply can't afford for Minwu to spend four turns removing status ailments through single-target casts of Esuna. The monsters will just cast those ailments again, faster than you can clear them, and you can quickly find yourself in an unwinnable situation. You need to train up Esuna so it can reliably clear all four characters of ailments in one cast.

-Wherever possible, whether in the regular game or SoR, cast spells in battle, rather than outside of it. Yes, it's more dangerous, but by casting magics in battle, you also slowly train up the magic stats relevant to that spell's affinity, which can be just as important as leveling up the spell itself.

-Training up your max MP can be an arduous task, but during the main game, there's a good way to do it. You're going to need a ton of Ethers, and you need to be far enough in the story to have access to the Palamecian Arena. In the cells below the arena, where you rescued Princess Hilda, you'll sometimes find an enemy called Parasite. It's a red worm with a huge mouth. Whenever you come across Parasites, kill any enemies that aren't Parasites, and then let the Parasites attack you. Parasites leech MP with their phys attack, sometimes in very large amounts. This makes for a very quick way of training up max MP, because you increase your map MP by depleting it. Once a character's MP is depleted, toss them an Ether. This is also a good time to train spells, since FFII doesn't allow you to do nothing on a turn, not even guard.

Leveling system, see the game revolves so badly arround it being an RPG, the bad leveling system naturally manages to kill the fun of whole game.
