I'm buying myself a NES for Xmas this year after losing mine years and years ago.

What are some of your favorite lesser known games that aren't going to cost an arm and a leg?

Sunsoft's Batman and Fester's Quest are some of my favorite Nintendo games. Fuck AVGN for convincing a legion of new-age hipsters that Fester's Quest sucks. Shit's top tier

If you're alright with RF you can swing a Famicom for 15-30 dollars. Most games on the thing are cheap as all hell.

And PROTIP: If you're gonna splurge money on an NES get yourself a top-loader. The OGs are defective pieces of shit like you wouldn't believe. Worst piece of hardware Nintendo has ever made.

Anyway looking at some other Nintendo games we got

Mighty Bomb Jack

Robocop

Blaster Master

Kung Fu Heroes

Captain Skyhawk (one of my favorite NES games)

Star Soldier (haven't played personally but watching Arino play it makes me want to. That and it's 3 dollars on ebay)

Rygar

Ultima Exodus

TMNT (isn't that bad I had fun with it outside of it's glaring problems)

And as >>4735 said get Lolo

They're fine if you stick to flash carts. Other than that, the pins are really prone to getting bent out of shape.

Scott Pilgrimfags aside, Clash at Demonhead is one of my favorite single-player games on the system. A lot of it does admittedly come from nostalgia and fondness for its presentation over the actual gameplay. Some of my favorites as far as gameplay goes are Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, and Kung Fu, but those are pretty obvious.

I don't really know what counts as a lesser-known game anymore with freely available ROMs and boards like this one, but StarTropics, Faxanadu, and Golgo 13 are worth checking out.

If you're looking for fun multiplayer games, there's Yoshi's Cookie, Trog!, and Baseball Stars. North & South is really good for that purpose but way too expensive.

I'm not sure what the prices are for these games nowadays, either.

All platformers. First one has a fucking fun multiplayer mode where you have to collect more bones in a level than your opponent - and you have 60 seconds to do it. There is five levels and who has more bones together wins. There is also SP mode which is nothing out of ordinary.

Kamen - Here is a unique one; no swords or guns - you throw a bird to damage enemies. There is a card game after every few levels, where you have to kill the boss by using higher-numbered cards than him. During the levels you can find cards that will double or triple your damage output (some are hidden). High variety of levels and enemies. Great soundtrack too. Highly recommended.

Kabuki - this time you fight with your HAIR. There are power-ups like bombs that you can use too. This one is more straightforward, but I still like it.

IMO, get Kamen if you would choose one of these. There is also an American remake - Yo Noid - which is just much worse. Though the levels are the same, the whole concept has been fucked. Graphics and soundtrack are much shittier.

Milon's Secret Castle - hard platform game but I liked it enough to finish it

I'm seconding Kabuki. It's a great action platformer for people who like stuff like Ninja Gaiden but want to play something else.

I think the cost might have jumped up a bit since the Cinemassacre video came out a while ago, but it shouldn't be too bad.
