No.4689 [View All]
This thread is for discussing all things MAME and arcade allowed under the board rules. Also so I can share the romset I've been working on.
This is not intended to be a complete romset of every game dumped, but every game that actually works under MAME. Minus all the barcade, pinball, slot machine, pachinko, mahjong, porn, and other assorted crap titles most people would never touch. This also excludes arcadized console games(Nintendo VS system, etc), Tiger electronic handhelds and Game&Watch titles. This is a completely merged MAME romset, so all the clones(regional variants and revisions) and BIOS files are contained within the same .zip file as the parent game. If you wish to play a different region or variant of the game, just rename the zip to the version you want. The end result of this is a very clean rom list. No BIOS files littering the folder, and you don't have 18 variants of the same game to scroll through. You can also be certain that the game is playable, and is actually a videogame and not something else.
Keep in mind many games expect you to have a joystick, trackball, wheel, or other specific controls. A large number of racing games act funny if you don't have the hardware it's expecting. A decent amount of sports games react the same way. It's possible to map a lot of that to a controller with analog sticks, but not all games will control 100% properly unless you have the right sort of controller for them. Best of luck to keyboard users.
I'm trying to update the set every 10 mame revisions or so, but I'll update if something major pops up, like a major new game or emulation improvements. When an update comes out, I'll put up an update pack to update all needed roms to the latest standard. All you need to do is drag and drop or copy+paste the roms and overwrite the old ones. Then I'll take down the old fullset and upload the new fullset. I'm going to try to keep from too many update packs before updating the fullset, but shit happens.
As of 5/3/2019, the current fullset is 0.205, and the current update packs are 0.205 to 0.206 and 0.206 to 0.209.

Hey, I was wondering if any anons could help me with something. Does anyone know of a specific shooter released for arcade, it was a two player vs game where one player played as a "boss" and the other played as the little plane. It was released for arcade but I can't remember it's name.

I'm building my own MAME arcade machine running on retropie.
It's hit and miss. Not as effective as PC, but I can always change out the Pi unit for an old PC.

What do you mean by not as effective? Is your RPi too slow for the games you're trying to run? In theory the RPi3 can run tons of stuff. This dude has accelerated Amiga systems with 68040 chips and he said the RPi emulates a much faster Amiga.

For what emulator? If it's MAME, you have to download the right version of the rom, because their shit always changes.
Anyway I don't know, but I plan to build this:
https://docs.libretro.com/library/mame2003_plus/
And the matching roms would be in here:
https://archive.org/details/MAME_0.193_ROMs_merged
https://archive.org/details/MAME_0.193_ROMs_split
Those are like 60 GB total each, and I'm not even sure what the differences are. But apparently you can download individual game roms by going into SHOW ALL -> List Contents and then pick a game.

Yeah, you caught me in the middle of updating. Getting the entire set current to 0.205 standards since there's been some major changes to emulation quality, as well as some major additions to the game list. It's taken a while since I let it slide for so long. Sad to say, there won't be an update pack this time around. It would be too damn big. Too many games had redumps and additional clones added, at this point it's just easier to start clean with a fresh set. I will have a New for 0.205 pack available if people just wanna check out the new stuff from 0.186 onwards without downloading the entire set again, but that's it. I'm working on the final update today since I already had the set up to 0.204 to be ready for it, once they are uploaded I'll post the new links. No more passwords, they don't appear to be needed.
On the plus side, lots of new games and emulation improvements from 0.170 and 0.185. SF Rush the Rock and Tokyo Wars are two big names. Q-Sound emulation and System 22 emulation have improved, and M2 emulation finally functions. Evil Night/Hell Night, Total Vice, and Tobe! Polystars now work. Some obscure games like Magic Purple and Night Mare have gotten dumped and are playable too. There's nearly 5GBs worth of new CHD using games, and nearly a GB of new non-CHD games. Merry Christmas folks.

Nah, if I wanted to make money off of this, I would be selling HDDs full of roms on craigslist.
I did this because I got sick and tired of every MAME set out there being EVERYTHING in existence. Shitty barcade machines, Tiger Electronics shit, endless mahjong games, and a whole lot of games that can't even be emulated yet. I wanted a MAME set of just working arcade games and ONLY arcade games, not all the extra crap 99% of people don't even want to look at. After downloading everything and going through and testing games one by one, I figured it would be a waste to do all this work and not share when it was likely there were other people looking for the same thing.
If you want some way to help me, I'm on the lookout for additional places to host the romset. Most usual spots would probably bitch since it's not a "complete" romset with all the useless crap. Or some jackass would come along and add the "missing" files and bloat it out. Any place without a bandwidth limit like Mega would be great.

Everything is in .rar's under 5GBs. This way you can go ahead and start playing while waiting for the rest to download, and to make it easier to get a full file through Mega's 5GB limit. And I did fuck up the new games pack by letting World Adventure slip in, which is another shitty mahjong game. Feel free to delete that one. I made sure to wipe it from the full pack. As usual, CHD games doesn't include the laserdisc titles, since those are fucking 15GBs each.
And I missed 125 games and probably more. Here's the 125 I found.

And one last little bonus for now. This is a modified version of MAME 0.204 64 bit for Windows, made to recognize Sega Sonic Bros, with the ROM already in the roms folder. Also in the Sega Sonic Bros ROM zip is the segac2.cpp file needed to compile your own copy of MAME that will recognize Sega Sonic Bros. For those that don't know, the MAMEdev team won't touch the game since they consider the ROM to be "hot". It should have been in 0.204, but got taken out, and even the commit that added it to the git was removed from the history. So if you want to play Sega Sonic Bros, this is pretty much the only way.

Ok, so ShouTime had a copy. Somehow, Guru got his hands on it. He releases it to the public, and adds it into MAME sometime after 0.203 releases. Suddenly the MAMEdev team claims to have gotten a C&D letter from SEGA. The letter says that they do not authorize anyone to have the fucking ROM, and if MAMEdev lets it be recognized by their software and thus playable, they will take MAMEdev to court to get ALL SEGA games removed from MAME. Guru swears it's just ShouTime and other hoarders playing BS games to keep the game super rare 'n valuable. MAMEdev team says "fuck this trouble" and pulls the commit and wipes it, and states they will not add Sega Sonic Bros to the MAME database. One of the MAMEdevs claims they will eventually add it "when things quiet down", but no idea of when that will be. They also say SEGA is sending out DMCA orders around the internet to get download links taken down, but so far only Guru's website is down and it's not for certain if that was a result of a takedown.
TL;DR version: MAMEdev team says SEGA is threatening to sue to have every single SEGA game removed from MAME if they so much as let MAME run Sega Sonic Bros. Could be BS, but MAMEdev team seems to believe it, and they don wan no trouble.

God, the good stuff just keeps on coming. Big news in 0.206 folks. San Francisco Rush 2049 and San Francisco Rush 2049 Special Edition just got promoted to working status. A good man by the name of tedgreen99 made some improvements to the audio and video, and brought it up to functional. I was planning on waiting until at least 0.210 to do an update, but instead I'm doing one as soon as 0.206 drops.

Alright, with 0.206 out, I need the space to update the set. The "new games" packs are going down. If you didn't get them before now, you gotta download the entire set.
Updating from 0.205 to 0.206 is as easy as copy and pasting and completely overwriting the existing roms with the new ones here:
https://mega.nz/#!sdFGyIQK!iNbvzlmFcz22XW_LRB_mpCiz6eBXQ1HDZ54UIZqaDHY
And here is the new game in 0.206, San Francisco Rush 2049 Special Edition. Usually I use the base game, but in this case it made more sense to go with SE. Having 2049 and 2049SE as separate games didn't make sense since 2049SE is just 2049 with 2 new tracks and some more cars. Would add 700MB-1GB for nothing. So instead I'm just using 2049SE for the set.

With 0.209 having that new Atari game that just got dumped, I'm going ahead and updating the set to 0.209. Gonna post an update pack and a new game pack for 0.209 for those that want to update from 0.206 or don't care to update. I will eventually be pulling down the complete set packs to replace them with 0.209, but I'd like to hold off on that until I finish up the 4th gen of the definitive version project. I would wait longer, but I have reason to suspect a game in one of the packs got corrupted.(Bombjack Twin in 1991-1995 to be specific) As usual, updating is just copy+pasting the new .zip files over the old ones and replacing them entirely. The 0.206 to 0.209 update pack assumes you already got the 125 games I missed in the pack here: >>7629

EDIT3: Alright, figured out the problem. HDD was dying, files were being corrupted, so they were being kicked out as invalid. Moved everything over to new HDD, managed to save the CHD games, but some regular games got borked. I'm just going to put everything I'm missing plus the games I'm sure I've missed into the same zip.
EDIT8: Found Fire Fox in the 197X-1985 set. It shouldn't be there, since it's a Laserdisc (10+GB CHD) game. Also being removed for being LD games, Cobra Command from the 1986-1990 set, Cliffhanger from the 197X-1985 set, M.A.C.H. 3 from the 197X-1985 set, Us Vs Them from the 197X-1985 set, and Cube Quest from the 197X-1985 set. If anyone wants to host the LD CHD files, I'll be glad to make a ROM pack for the LD games.
EDIT11: Testing is underway, some titles have definitely been promoted to working since 0.170 and I failed to notice. Also more than a few titles I've never seen before. Some I'm dead certain just got borked when my HDD died. It's taking a while due to IRL shit. Stay tuned.

I have a comfy complete set (including all history files, cheats, etc.) from 2002 or so with all the classics and just about 5GB in size. Was the last version before they added more modern titles and runs to this day. 0.61 or some shit, newest Rom is from year 2000 and was Metal Slug 3. The next mame already featured 3D titles, mine was the last with only 2D games. Running it with the EmuLoader frontend, works fine. Here's a screen cap. 3352 working (partially emulated are hidden in the GUI but everything is 100% complete) Roms.
Took me forever back then to get them all and I didn't even bother to update ever since. It's all the retro shit I will ever need (or mostly all).
