I wanna get into Metroid and Zelda series. However, some of the early games of the both series have remakes for GBA. Should I play originals or remakes?

 No.3813

If you don't start with Metroid Fusion or Super Metroid you're doing it wrong.

 No.3814

>>3812

If memory serves right, Zero Mission has the original Metroid game on it as a bonus game or unlockable, or something; might be a good idea to give both versions a go (and don't forget about Super Metroid on the SNES). As for the Legend of Zelda games, the GBA games aren't exactly remakes but more of ports (barring Minish Cap, which was an original game, and one made by Capcom). I haven't heard a lot of complaints about the ports of the two NES games. The A Link to the Past one includes a bonus game in the form of Four Swords, but a lot of people tend to be a bit iffy on the quality of SNES-to-GBA ports in general, namely the changes to the color palettes and the GBA having lower quality audio (and the ALTTP port also changed Link's voice to that of Toon Link for some reason, which some people do see as a negative). Might want to consider emulating the SNES version instead, or buy it on the VC for the Wii or whatever.

 No.3819

Play the originals, those are the games that people fell in love with and built these franchises.

 No.3822

You should skip LTTP altogether, it's massively overrated by people who want the series to be nothing but generic hack and slash. If you truly do want to get into the Zelda series, start with the first good game in it, Link's Awakening. (or OOT if you prefer 3d)

 No.3830

>>3822

>LTTP is generic hack'n slash

>Link's Awakening isn't

You're going to want to go into a little more detail than that, m8.

 No.3833

>>3830

Link's Awakening isn't a hack and slash because it has puzzles and items that are useful for more than combat, one time, in the dungeon you found them.

It isn't generic because unlike LTTP it has a story and characters and distinctive dungeons.

 No.3834

>LTTP

>generic hack and slash

I'd offer a rebuttal, but your stupidity deserves none of it, not that you offered any substance to back that claim up in the first place.

>>3833

I'm assuming you never played LTTP, as every item you gain is used all over the map of that game to find secret after secret. There's practically a secret on every screen and simply more to do than there is in Link's Awakening. Your criticism is outright invalid and comes from a place of very obvious dishonesty to anybody who has actually played the games.

 No.3835

>>3834

And I'm assuming your tard wrangler typed that for you, because everything about that post suggests someone too stupid to do it himself.

>Two amazing fucking Zelda games

>People shitting on each other about which one is better

Iwata would be disappointed in you.

If you have a 3DS, OP, I would recommend *not* playing the remakes of OoT and MM first. Play the originals. Why? Because the atmosphere was watered down to make them more kid friendly. In N64 days they were trying to make the games as dramatic, shocking, heart-wrenching as possible. Right now, Nintendo wants to make things bubbly, curvy, jumpy, colorful, etc. Which is not how those games were designed.

I would say OoT and then MM would be a safe bet. Many people make the argument that OoT is just a 3D LTTP anyway, and they have valid points. I think it'd be good to sit down at a proper console (emulate the N64, use a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller w/pc) and do things that way, which is how the original Zeldas were played.

Do play those two games the other anons are bickering about, though. They are both fantastic. I don't mind LTTP on GBA. It's still fun. They didn't change anything critical about the atmosphere or pacing.

 No.3841

>>3835

That's all well and good, but as usual you offer no substance for blanket claims of "generic hack and slash" or the lies that "LTTP doesn't have distinctive dungeons," or that "items are used only for combat, one time, in the dungeon they were found in."

These are just simply lies, so keep spamming how everyone else sounds stupid but you, a, person, screaming about a game it seems he's never played (or, even worse, a person lying about a game he did play.)

>>3839

I always find it comical when somebody comes out of the woodwork to scream about how great LA is, yet, how awful LTTP is when they are both so similar to one another that they offer about as close a gaming experience to each other as exists in the entire video game industry.

>Because the atmosphere was watered down to make them more kid friendly.

Can you give us a concrete example of this? I don't think I'd ever bother playing the remakes as I put a lot of time into the originals, but I am curious. Especially with regards to MM - not much can cover up how dark that fucker is.

They are pretty goddamned close gameplay wise, but I feel like the dungeouns are better and I vastly prefer the story line in LA. but anyway…

>>3842

>Can you give us a concrete example of this?

Oh, absolutely. Pic related is a small example, but you should immediately recognize the difference in tone.

Well, I can't say it amounts to a whole lot of much, but Gannondorf does look less intimidating in the revised edition. Is everything that light?

>but Gannondorf does look less intimidating in the revised edition. Is everything that light?

It's not an isolated instance. Everything is less intimidating and awe-striking as it was back when the graphics were obviously more impressive than they are currently. Yes, everything is that light.

Zero Mission is an entirely different game from Metroid I, it just covers the same plot (plus retcons)

 No.4071

Aren't Zelda I and II on GBA just from that classics series or something? Aren't they straight ports?

Link to the Past is the best game in the series, and the GBA version has an extra dungeon and Four Swords, which I recently managed to play with some bros on an emulator. There are minor changes, which have been mentioned, but if you think you can get some Four Swords going and enjoy that extra dungeon, then why wouldn't you?

Link's Awakening is also remade on GBC as Link's Awakening DX. Might as well play DX. It's the same thing with an extra dungeon. I just want more content.

I never got into Metroid before but have been playing the first one today. I would have tried Zero Mission but everything I read about it seems to show it is actually a very different game that does the same plot. I expect it is easier than the original game, too, because for some reason I find Metroid 1 to be the hardest game ever. I can beat Zelda II, I can beat Ninja Gaiden, but I can't even come close to feeling like I'm even getting passably good at Metroid. I can't advance at all. I don't know what the hell my problem is, because people don't act like Metroid is the hardest game ever, but it clearly is. I even got pretty far in Metroid II before deciding I might as well play the original first, I didn't find Metroid II hard, but people act like it's almost as hard as the original. It's totally not.

What the hell is the matter with me? Why can't I get good at Metroid I?

And no, the lack of map isn't my problem. I can memorize all that shit, I just can't make it past enemies without getting hit and losing the one hit that you begin with every time you die.

 No.4078

>>4071

Metroid I becomes much easier as you progress. You're just very weak at the beginning. Also, refilling your lifebar if you die is boring.

Story line is such a minor part of any pre 3D Zelda game. Most of us played these games as kids not even knowing what was going on beyond "I need to save the princess, I need to collect stuff to do that." Very little of these games is dedicated to story in the first place, gameplay takes up almost the entire experience.

I personally played zero mission first. I think it's probably the best way to get introduced to the series, it isn't very hard but i think thats the best thing about it for a new player. It familiarizes you with the formula and as long as you dont mind going backwards gameplay wise then i think it'll help make the earlier games more manageable to get through. Plus it comes with the original metroid so there isn't a good reason to not get it.
