How's about a Quake I thread? What went wrong? What went right? I just started playing it and I'm really enjoying it.

Not as good as Doom but still a great game. A lot of people say it was their first bad game, I think it was their last good one. Not a fan of the sequels though.

I'm of the opinion that Quake was already the most boiled-down shooter you could possibly make. They kept going down that path until they hit Quake 3. With that game you got the most boiled-down competitive shooter you could possibly make. After all that, there was nowhere for it to go but sit in stagnation, and as far as I can tell the shooter fanbase as a whole are all too happy to oblige.

just got back into quake (and darkplaces) after being away from it for 15 years. damn that rocket launcher and heavy nailgun are so satisfying. and the sound of grenades clanging about took me back.

managed to get into a coop game too. so cool that people are still playing it.

I used to make mods back in the day. all terrible shit, nothing good.

right: superb art design, the best sound effects of any game before or since, cool guns (if a bit generic, and no pump animation for the shotty), QuakeC. Multiplayer is fucking fun

wrong: pretty weak enemy design – try any user mod and it's pretty much vore/shambler town all the time as those are the only really challenging bad dudes. Too many upgraded versions of things (weapons, knights). Not much difference between level themes.

it was nearly a great game

my best one was an arena thing where doors would open, monsters would flood in and you'd have to just survive. you'd start with an axe and earn xp to get more weapons, and as you did harder monsters would come out.

couple of team based multiplayer ones that i only playtested with bots.

and the usual gore and overpowered weapons mods. you know, triple rocket launcher and enemy skins changing to show damage ala quake 2.

I don't know what this feel is, but it comes from a TC eventually being released as a commercial product and having that kind of advertising.

I like this feel.

This guy describes it better than I could:

http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-talk/single-player/481-just-tried-malice.html

Differences from Quake:

- higher moving speed (352?), insane bunnyhopping

- real falling damage

- weapons need reloading (impulse 12)

- destroyable environment (often necessary to proceed)

- no armor or powerups

- so-called toyz (hoverboard, minisubs, etc.)

- completely new sounds

- higher difficulty

Pros:

very good models (monsters and weapons) and good sounds

destroyable environment

many funny ideas (squishable rats, Damage talking…)

vehicles (mini submarines) !

a story

cutscenes (funny ones)

probably very enjoyable deathmatch

But OMG, that leveldesign! Why did they design levels in THAT way? Even the first level is so hard to navigate. Hardly could find all the rooms with submarine, parachute, and hoverboard. Man, I thought the rest of levels would be more playable, but after those secret level, where you should shoot at the invisible spot on the monitor, I've dropped the game. The developers definitely have their own SPECIFIC view on the leveldesign.

any guides on how to install Quake? I fucking hate dosbox and can't find any other way of playing it. Doom at least had zDoom + the ability to literally just drag and drop wad files.

Nevermind, found a good engine.

Must say, I'm actually very impressed. I played DOOM and didn't like it because the enemy variety was low and the pacing felt kinda slow and repetitive, but holy shit I'm loving this one.

The atmosphere is amazing and the level design is great. The enemies take some thought to kill and the weapons are pretty good.

Can someone please explain why most people praise DOOM over Quake?

DOOM came out in 1993, established the FPS Shooter Genre and kick started today's Video Gaming Culture.

Quake came out 1996 and was just a really good FPS Shooter, that made good use of true 3D graphics.

No it's pretty easy, it gets more complicated when you're trying to make Quake do things it shouldn't. I've been a modder since day 1 for Quake and still am to this day.

Installed Quake on a retro PC (Pentium II) under Win98SE and the music can't be heard (even though the game reads the music tracks from the CD, which can be seen from the CD drive activity). The music works fine under DOS 6.22 on the same PC. Anyone knows what might be wrong? Graphics performance seems faster under Win98 than under DOS so it would be great to get the music working too.

Ok nevermind, problem solved. It turns out I had to use a DOS mixer program to set volume levels for Quake (the CD audio output channel was all the way down from the DOS mixer's perspective) even though the game was running under Windows. Then again Quake is a 16-bit DOS program, so the solution is plausible (even if confusing).

Oh and fastvid helps immensely, with activated LFB combined writes the game runs as fast under DOS as does under Windows (with the latter probably activating an equivalent performance improvement on graphics driver level).

I noticed that Quake 2/3 engine games somehow insist on using display modes with very high refresh rates like 150 Hz. I don't want to overwork the old CRT monitor with stupidly high refresh rates which are of no use anyway (the computer reaches nowhere near the framerates), just 85 Hz (which is set in dxdiag, and which other games follow except for Q2/3 games like Q2/Hexen2/Half-Life/Q3 etc.) or even 60 Hz will be enough. I don't remember them doing this back in the day btw (or I just didn't pay attention to it), have they always been that way?

It's very average. Drags on a bit.

It's also bizarre in that you spend the entire game shooting the X-Men.
