Works for me.

I'm a fan of Gauntlet but disliked how it became meaningless once you were on free play or emulating and could just give yourself health whenever you wanted.

I'd like more a game like it but changed slightly. Perhaps a slower pace and some slightly deeper RPG elements.

Have you played Gauntlet IV for the Genesis/Mega Drive? It has slight RPG elements (you can use points to level up various attributes) and was designed for home play so doesn't have the issue of infinite health. It's a bit too easy, but fun while it lasts.

Barely makes it into retro, but Loaded is a hell of a lot of fun. The soundtrack is by PWEI (Pop Will Eat Itself). Level design sucks sometimes though.
