Do you prefer to only play games on original hardware or do you like to collect games and then emulate them when possible so you don't risk damaging them? Personally I've been thinking about doing the latter since I modded my Wii.

I would prefer playing them on the regular system. It makes saving them a lot more easier. However, without emulation I wouldn't be able to not only enjoy other games, but I wouldn't be able to get the other games due to high prices. Great example, Earthbound.

I prefer to play on original hardware on a CRT, but damn. ZSNES has been around for so long that the main menu triggers nostalgia.

I use my Wii hooked up to a CRT and it's pretty nice. It has some nice convenience in that I can just save state if I'm not able to reach a save before needing to quit and I can fast forward through grinding in RPGs. Although, after playing like that for a while I sometimes try to move the right stick to fast forward through menu transitions and things in other games for a while.

It is really hard to damage a Super Nintendo or Super Nintendo Cart. You'd have either spill something that can damage a circuit board into the cart slot, or let them rust outside or something.

There is also the glorious middle ground: get an SNES and a flashcart. In fact, I would recommend that course of action because it is a terrible time to actually buy 16bit era games right now. They are in the middle of a bubble because everyone who wants them for muh nostalgia is in their 30s and has loads of disposable income to waste.

I prefer to emulate. Got my pc hooked up to a CRT TV and i play in the original resolution/refresh rate. I used to collect games, got boxes and boxes full of CIB games, but it's a waste of money.

I emulate a lot of stuff, but I still like to have physical old games. There are also a lot of games I like that I wouldn't be able to play without emulation, such as the SNES Fire Emblem games.

You can also emulate games on a homebrewed Wii and use a CRT.

I emulate whenever I can. The only reason I still have most of my collection is because I'm too lazy to sell it off and my nephew likes playing them when he comes over.

I just don't like having lots of stuff sitting around.

You know what I say whenever a friend tells me they liked a game, and they didn't play it on the original console and cartridge?

I say "how do you know you like it? You haven't played it."

And they haven't. They've played a bit of code trying to replicate what the game is.

That's silly. If you play Checkers online or something then you've still played Checkers despite it not being a physical game of Checkers.

Because the Everdrives and other flash drives and optical drive replacements exist, I prefer actual hardware. I used to emulate before all of this was practical, of course. I have nothing against emulation, either.

Obviously the regular system just has that amazing nostalgic feel.

I play mostly on emulators just for the sake of convenience, not much is lost, I still get much of the same experience. But, when I do have the chance, I'll go with the hardware, but I won't spend ridiculous money just to get the hardware experience when I can emulate (unless it's a game series I really love like Shining Force.)

I prefer hardware, but emulation can be pretty good for trying out old games without investing money.

If I really enjoy a game I've only emulated and want to replay it (I've done this with Mother 3), I'll buy the original cartridge or a reproduction if it isn't too pricey.

Emulators.

Back in the day I even played some of my PS1 games on ePSXe when my original HW was still working, due to 2xSAI, unlimited memory card capacity, no hassle witch changing discs, and save states enabling me to stop and resume the game whenever I want.

Also, playing Bomberman, Shin Megami Tensei or Der Langrisser on my phone while riding the bus to work is pretty cool.

I prefer playing with the original cartridges, consoles, and CRTs from that era. The games were all designed around having those exact set ups. Just feels like part of the experience to me.

I do emulate for NES stuff that uses save codes though. That is my biggest gripe with older games. I hate not being able to actually save.

I hardly ever managed to beat a game all the way through when I was a kid, the main reason being that I was too lazy to write down, archive and input the passwords all the time.

Playing on a CRT on a modded Wii is pretty close to an actual SNES (SNES 9X GX for the Wii is one of the best SNES emulators, with great compatibility and accuracy, and the classic controller pro is pretty good), so I would recommend you to do it, it's a great low budget choice (the same is true for Genplus-GX emulator for Wii, which is fucking based).

If you have lots of money, you could set up an actual SNES with an everdrive/SNES2SD flashcart and play it with an original SNES controller, so you don't degrade your carts.

I just emulate whenever possible.

this

I collect my games and play them on the original console

Even if it's just nostalgia, playing them on an emulator just doesn't feel the same

I still have a part of my collection of original retro games, and generally prefer playing those games on the original console the way it was intended.

That being said, the recent price bubble on retro games is beyond retarded taking away all appeal from collecting them and making emulation the better choice. Retro games should be worth 10 bucks at most.

I hope your right anon. I remember buying N64 games for $10 in early mid 2000s and now all my n64 just because I was poor and couldn't afford new games. Now idiots are willing to pay $35 for a copy of starfox.

I like having hard copies. I've been told more than once to just get games on the PS store or play them on my PC via emulator. I like playing them more pure and I like owning and collecting games. I just need to dig my old Toshiba out. I think the red started bleeding around 03 though. Fuck.

thanks superbus

Tried playing legend of mana for the first time on an emulator and it feels like I'm really ruining the experience that way.

LSD dream emulator is just a crazy expensive game. I tend to not buy those because one of these days the retro hipsters are going to get bored of games and move on to the next big thing sending prices down the toilet, but this really isn't the type of game they'd care about and still sells for big bucks in japan where they have no influence.

Plus its the limited edition version.

I retro game store I (sometimes) go to sells some games for stupid money. They go off the ebay listings and the guy is very hard to haggle with. I'm not paying god damn 20-40 bucks for a game that came out before I was born or a game I could have paid the same price for 15 years ago. Bullshit.

As much as I love to use the original games, the prices on them are out of control. Looking at Snatcher's listings on Ebay, it looks like some people just get a thrill out of buying up every available copy of a game so they can drive the price up. It's not fair to everyone else who is treating computer games as something other than just a commodity.

I strongly prefer original hardware. You need to be smart about how you play, however. I never tell anyone to spend hundreds on Saturn or SNES games, I tell them to look into flash carts. It's a bit of an expense at first, but you be much happier with dropping the cash once and having that library from then on.

As long as I have the console and something that'll let me play games from a single cartridge/SD card/HDD, like Everdrive or the Network Adapter for the PS2, I play it on the hardware. If said console is too expensive or it is an arcade game, I emulate. I'm not much of a collectorfag, but I do sometimes buy retro stuff whenever I have money to splurge.
