Its only weak point is the too much symmetry in town development paths, hero progression and unit tiers. And even then those are all well thought-out and, while not perfectly balanced, easy to learn and very hard to master. The game is overall a step up from the predecessor, which is already an amazing game.
Not sure which fan-made expansion you are referring to, but I would recommend installing WoG after beating an official campaign or several and getting to know the game better in general.
Just try to approach it with a different mindset: you are a general overseeing the battlefield from afar, being only able to relay orders and support your troops with spells. I'm sure they wouldn't show heroes so close to troops on battlefields if the technology could allow that back then. You don't even see your hero in KB, after all, and that is the progenitor of the series. The heroes were added purely for convenience in HMM1, I am certain of it.
