Biggest reason I'd say is just that platformers, which tend to have animal mascots more than other games, are no where near as popular as they once were.
I guess my favorite would be Spyro. I need to get around to really playing the og crash games.

If Crash 1 aggravates you (especially if you choose to go for 100%), don't let that turn you off of Crash 2 and 3. Crash 2 made a lot of improvements and 3 uses it as a base, making for a solid foundation even if some of the other gameplay styles (like the bike and plane) aren't exactly up to par in comparison.

What I liked about Spyro is that everything you did "made sense" in terms of character abilities - you were a dragon, so you could breath fire, use your wings (if only for a glide, for the most part), and charge with your horns. Turning wasn't "immediate" because you were quadrupedal, and so you had to be aware of this while running. This is way that every animal mascot should be, rather than "HEY GUIZE HES A DRAGON LOOK LOL" and then he just controls like another Mario with a gimmick.
Pic related's another example of "actual animal mechanics" rather than "Mario with a gimmick". Are there any others?

Actually this is mostly because the animal protag thing blows a massive nigh unignorable fucking hole in the "muh representation" argument which is why you don't really see it as much
