I have played the matchmaking servers for a while. Most complaints are about "it's unbalanced" or "random crits aaaaa" which community servers fixed decades ago or even improved upon them by enabling fixed spread so weapons actually take more skill to use and aren't just rabdom damage past a certain range, but nobody ever joins them because it's much faster to just queue into a random game with random people who'll just leave after the first match is over for some reason.
Stock weapons are great, specially for Scout and Demo, but i often see myself at a disadvantage as a Stock Soldier against any Banner/Equalizer/Paintrain/Mgarden/Boats soldier because they have ways to mitigate whatever advantage my Shotgun has with either speed, survivability, minicrits or passive regeneration. Engineer really suffers as the only ranged building healing he has is an unlockable shotgun variant, many of his other wrenches are just objetively better than Stock for most situations, specially Offense with either Eureka or Gunslinger. Medics without Crossbows are told to uninstall the game asap and Spies without Icicle, DR or Kunai are just gimped in general over what they can get away with. Sniper Razorback and Dshield are just too useful compared to the SMG and the piss bottle removes damage falloff for teammates at range in a huge radius with its minicrits, and there's never any reason to use the stock Melee unless you're a Pyro without a Homewrecker or Neon Annihilator.

TF2 is not a regular FPS. It's a team-based shooter where class composition is supposed to be a core mechanic that distinguishes it from other games. Every class having it's strengths and weaknesses, covering different aspects, areas and mechanics in the game means that the team who can best synergism and combine them would win more often.
Instead, what did we got? 2 "jack of all trades" classes that turn out to be the biggest damage dealers, with the best mobility and being respectively the 2nd and 3rd highest HP class in the game, with first being a fucking joke due to how slow he is.
Boiling frogs like you that simply got used to this and can't ever fathom why it could possibly be bad or how the game could have otherwise will always dismiss this criticism despite how crucial it is to how fucked TF2 really is. Soldier and Demo easily outshine just about any other class in several areas of the game to the point that you'll only play something else if there's a very, very, very good reason to do so or you enjoy losing that much.
Best way to understand it is to look at Classes as if they were Weapons and suddendly it all clicks in. Soldier and Demo are stock, the best in most circumstances. But there are a few specific situations where a sidegrade to another class would be more usefull, even if it doesn't happen that much.
Now you're going to call me a nigger, because that's what niggers do, and try to refute all of this, maybe even you already started typing before you've read this far.
Go watch Competitive, what do you see. Soldiers and Demos are almost half the team. Scouts are there to cap points and replace Spy\Sniper with a speedier version of him and even then they only exist to hunt down Medics, the class that is only played because it's mandatory if you don't want to lose. Try any other combination at all, no matter what, and you're gimping your odds of winning the game.
Do you understand what I'm getting at here? Of course not, let me spell it out for you…
In a game where it's most distinguishable characteristic is building a team with different classes to suit the current situation, there's a single composition that's better than anything else and no reason to ever try anything else if you actually want to win. The balance in the game actively shits on it's own premise on a competitive level. In fact, Competitive TF2 is the most anti-TF2 you can possibly ever be!

That part is even fucking worse. You already start with the problem that you can play any class and do reasonably well or you can pick Soldier\Demo and do fantastically well. It's not a very good choice to force on players, do you want to go on a killing spree or build sentries?
But that's the least of the problems on pub servers. The fact that teamwork and on that note, team composition as well, do not matter at all means you once again hit the same problem where the game actively shits on it's most well defying characteristic. There's enough players in a team that whatever class you're thinking off already has someone else there and no matter what you pick you will always find a counter or someone you can counter on the other team. In Pub TF2, you pick the class you feel like playing, not what the team needs. This is fine in principle, but you might as well be playing Overwatch at that point.

And since that's often the best identifier of skill, that's what you should focus on even if you just want to win the round anyway!
Pub games don't only shit on team composition, they also shit on teamwork as well and eventually turn every game into a Team Deatchmatch. And when you're playing TDM, what classes are you going to bring to the table? Which ones are more apt to get you kills in most circunstances and situations? That's right. We're back at those 2 again.
Because TF2 was always a badly balanced game that was only fun to play when it's players cared more about winning a round as a team and having fun than their personal score or being competitive. The second you try to make it look competitive, you get the stale meta of 6's as a live example to how fucked up the class composition is and when you try to force some balance on team skill, you ruin what was left of teamwork in the first place.
But I ain't a cunt so I'll actually tell you how this could easily be fixed: Half of the damage for double the radius on explosives. That fucking simple. Maybe even make it 1/3 for 3 times instead.
If explosions were intended for actual "area denial", having a weapon that deals a moderate amount of damage over a large area would make it far better than the goddamn projectile shotguns that rocket\grenade launchers tend to be.
The more players there are in an area, the more damage you'd be doing with each shot, meaning that both "jack of all trades" classes have their own specialized role now that no other class has: punish players stacking together. Even better, with a larger radius but less damage, they can more easily start punishing anyone taking cover but giving them enough of a warning that they can do something about it.
You could effectively have the Sniper\Spy being useful since they become the actual "single target damage dealers", with Heavy having a very strong presence that can't easily be demolished by peaking around a corner to shoot rockets at someone walking at the speed of a building.
With proper number tweaking, you could easily have Heavy causing a very large amount of DPS that surpasses any explosive weapon, but when hitting 3 or more players with explosive weapons, the combined damage actually exceeds the minigun, making it quite worthwhile too. In the right situations, as all other classes.
What's best is that you still get to keep all the movement tricks that those 2 classes have, but now possibly with less self-damage so you can do them even more and it's easier for new players to practice and learn them. It puts those 2 classes in a position where they get movement, survivability but not damage, making them excelent for newcomers and as actual "jack of all trades". And if the situation requires more damage, instead of picking another of these, you switch to Heavy or Spy or Sniper based on terrain and the other team composition.
Basically, by turning explosive weapons into something that has a rule not covered by anyone else (attack large groups of players), you make these 2 classes distinct enough without outshining all others to the point that you can actually have a flowing meta and changes in team composition during a match.

What is fascinating about this whole ordeal, is that valve can use this data to determine if it is or is not more profitable to have fewer unusual sales at higher prices then more unusual sales at lower prices.
There is clearly an assumption ITT and on other sites that Valve makes more money on the higher ticket sales, but it may not really be the case.
