73e1fe  No.16714180

After all these years there doesn't seem to be a simple solution to using controllers on PC. I use and have multiple controllers depending on what type of games I'm playing and configuration of them is a PITA. I have multiple fight sticks, and original Xbox, a DS4, a DS3, Wii/classic controllers, a Logitech PS clone, and a bunch of others. I'm running Windows 7 on my gaming PC.

No matter what I use or what types of applications I use to manage them I always seem to end up in config hell. It gets even worse when I want to play local co-opt on games with friends. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm using legal games I was gifted through (((steam))) or stuff I've pirated.

Is there a /comfy/ application that will manage this cluster fuck? Is there anything out there that will let me hot swap controllers in-game? If there something that will allow me to have multiple controllers hooked up and configure them to be P1, P2, P3 etc without resorting to restarting games and plugging them up in the order I want them in?

Steam seems to be one of the main offenders in this because since they introduced big picture mode it just added another layer of config hell. I'm probably out of date but I'm using XBCD to manage 360/original Xbox controllers and DS4Windows to handle the Playstation stuff. Sometimes everything seems to play nice with each other but other times it takes 15+ minutes to preform the correct voodoo to get everything working correctly. Sometimes I'm playing /fightan/ with friends and they bring their own sticks and it just becomes horrible having to restart games to get them to pick up the controllers.

Is there anything out there that solves all these issues?

there's no way around it other than a subset of controllers not all controllers. on ganoo+loonix it's a bit easier but not by much

I don't get what you're bitching about, op. I have a Xbox 360 wired, Xbox 360 wireless, DS4 and a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.

The Xbox 360 controllers just work in whatever game I use them, unless they don't have proper controller support in the first place, in which case it's the devs fault. Same for the DS4 as long as I'm using DS4Windows. Most flight sims also promptly recognize and load presets for my Logitech stick and I don't even need to have the Logitech software running.

I'm running Windows 8.1 but in this regard I don't think 7 is any different.

I've got a DS4 and a fightstick.

DS4windows is pretty much the all-in-one solution for modern games that want a controller.

Xpadder is the best solution for older games, arcade games, or indie games where D-pad input is generally preferred.

The stick works out-of-box in most games but in certain cases where it's an indie game or something where the stick's not recognized, Xpadder does exactly what I'd want it to because Sticks are mostly just a bigger, more precise dpad.

My big complaint is that many modern games only display the Xbox button prompts despite using a DS4 controller. This is manageable sometimes except in cases where the games have QTE sequences, specifically fast ones. No doubt a proper set-up with multiple hotas or a wheel with pedals and a shifter is more fun to use, but its also stupidly expensive if you dont want cheap chink shit.

wouldn't be an issue if the microsoft niggers kept supporting directinput. instead they pushed xinput to lure in more devs (same reason we had to deal with the gfwl shit) which has all kinds of limitations and ofc it's not supported by their direct competitors like sony. this also means the feature set is limited to what xbox pads support (or devs including that functionality via directinput, but why bother when xbox pads need to be able to use it anyway) like gyro. except now we have a fucking mess of inputs even on current hardware thanks to that.

>>16714527

>disable xbox emulation

>game that supports ds4 via directinput suddely has ps prompts

unless the developer went the extra mile letting you choose which prompts you want (wildlands for example), you're either stuck with xbox prompts which also give you wireless + rumble or ps prompts which only works wired and rumble if the devs specifically implemented it (almost never).

However only if you want to play only digital AKA no analog stick games/controllers.

I don't have your problem however you can use a program like

Xpadder where you create a profile to it to intercept the controller and send key presses.

For example you can configure the pad to send keyboard keys so you map the controller to the keyboard setup you have.

I control a lot of application this way notably my play/stop audio up/down skip frame forward/back in my laptop so I can watch it while doing other things.

Can confirm on windows 7 its no problem I think its more game dependent.

Xbox 360 and Logitech only for me.

It just works however you need to install the CD drivers to have Xbox 360 support in windows 7.

OP you need to check out Mortal Kombat 9 i remember it having a

>Press your device now

function when you start a game where player 1 will be whatever device is pressed now etc.

I think its more a game specific issue.

Did you know? Ms decided to fuck everyone in the ass by inventing their special X control protocol instead of the standard direct controller thing that was a PC standard from the 90s.

Fun fact MS is not including X drivers in windows 7 however is providing D drivers by default (MS logic).

This is why my logitech stuff has a magic switch to switch from X to D if some game/emulator is not recognizing it I flip this switch 9/10 it fixes the problem.

Keyboards are great for classic platforms.

If you once play on a keyboard you never go back to playing classic console games on a controller.

Arrow kays = D Pad

QWEASD = buttons ABXY or 6 button controllers etc.

SPACE = right bumper

SHIFT or control = left bumper.

C = select

Z = Start

play wit both hands on the keyboard and give it a try. Every NES/SNES era game is better to play this way.

You need to be used to use arrows for movement also arrows are on a separate USB channel(or what is the name of this crap) meaning they don't conflict with the 6 keys pressed at the same time limit also physically further away preventing ghosting and other issues.

i mean i remember AVGN bitching about if A or B is to be used for jump. Seriously who gives a shit A and B are mapped to A and D for me you never know the comfort of holding down a button so easily and having my index finger to use for jump. having 1 thumb to fondle 2 buttons is a terrible idea.

Game pads are seriously the least optimal way to play a game. They are designed to be held in hands and sacrifice a lot of interactivity for this. If a gaming device is stationary you can have all of your fingers interact with it. And paddles on pro controllers prove this. Put the damn thing on the table for crying out loud don't sacrifice most of your hands to hold the damn thing in air if you have tables.

>turns into KB+M vs controller and Windows vs. Linux

Every time. I just wanted to know if a solution to this problem finally existed and a bunch of fags that don't play local co-op show up to gloat about how they don't have an issue using their own or two controllers. This retarded shit goes on and people wonder why they still use consoles for /fightan/ tournaments.

From what I'm seeing in the thread a solution doesn't exist. I guess I'm forced to put together something to solve it then. There is really no excuse why hot swapping devices isn't solved after all these years except for pure laziness. Anyone that isn't bothered by it obviously isn't using various input devices for different games. I just want my KB+M for FPS, my Sanwa stick for /fightan/, my Seimitsu LS-56 stick for shumps, and the various controllers I have for old consoles for emulators. I also want to be able to quickly set-up/plug-in multiple sticks/controllers for friends and guests that want to play. Going through 10+ minutes of config every time the controllers change is retarded. I was just hoping something existed to handle hot swapping and mapping controllers to various player inputs before I was forced to make something myself. I'm sick of having to maintain old consoles like the 360 to host /fightan/ tournaments locally when it'd be so much easier to run everything on a PC if the controller issues could be worked out.

I have a lot of GNU/Linux (prefer Gentoo) and *BSDs boxes but some of my gaming PCs don't have the proper CPUs in them to support hardware passthru and WINE isn't acceptable for a lot of modern /fightan/ games. My next gaming PC will support this and my current one will be repurposed for a CandyCab I have laying around. Since most of the arcade games I pirate only support Windows natively I'm not going to be able to run GNU/Linux on it. It'll be less of an issue in the CandyCab because I'll have have built-in controllers but I plan on adding USB passthru so people can hook up their own controller/stick so I'm going to have to figure something out. I'll probably just do it all in hardware to avoid the headache.

Thanks anyway to the few who replied seriously and understand the nature of the problem. Once I figure something out I'll release it for free instead of charging for it like a greedy kike.

Forgot to mention I understand the xinput vs dinput problem that Microsoft manufactured. I have a couple of games that really shit the bed on supporting both types of devices. BB:CF on PC will not work with 2 of the same type of controllers. To play 2 player on PC you must have one xinput and one dinput device. If you plug up two of the same input type it maps them both as the same player.

>Every time. I just wanted to know if a solution to this problem finally existed and a bunch of fags that don't play local co-op show up to gloat about how they don't have an issue using their own or two controllers.

except I did. the problem is there is no clear-cut solution or "fix", because it depends how you want to use it (directinput not working wireless, ds3 needing a bt adapter exclusively etc). if you use everything wired it should be less of an issue how windows enumerates through input devices.

another issue is that it highly depends on games, so unless you want help with a specific game you can't just say "do X". if it supports directinput it usually gets confused by xinput emulation seeing 2 controllers, which means getting a mixture of both to run is another headache (some game lets you disable one or both). also better mothball dat ds3 if you still own a ps3, because replacing that will be a pain in the ass once it inevitably wears out/breaks, turning your ps3 in a fancy paperweight.

another fun part is windows itself, for example until 1903 a dualshock required re-pairing every time with ds4windows it went to sleep.

in general if stuff supports directinput (iirc fight sticks, no idea how much they support xinput) and the game does as well it shouldn't be much an issue. might be easier if you just remove everything and only use what you need for specific cases.

>BB:CF on PC will not work with 2 of the same type of controllers.

sounds kinda stupid, so you couldn't use 2 sticks? otoh it's a nip port so wouldn't surprise me…

>Forgot to mention I understand the xinput vs dinput problem that Microsoft manufactured.

Most people assign buttons from the gamepad to keys on the keyboard. What ruins this is how a lot of games don't have the option to ignore button inputs from the controller (mostly old Dinput games but also some newer games). Those old games only give you very limited options to configure the controls as they expect you to use this. Not to mention console ports and games designed for consoles (Bioshock) have very poor PC configuration options.

>I heard that product was actually shit.

Possibly, however I'm talking about the concept itself. of having a analog thing on the side. I think the concept is not explored and no company did really try to perfect it.

Personally I was thinking of using the nub technology like in think pads for analog input.

I think the idea needs to be experimented with.

And I see immediate benefits in current games. If the analog stick is used for movement the WASD can be used for actual interaction buttons.

The idea at least deserved experimentation for some time.

My condolences.

>There is really no excuse why hot swapping devices isn't solved after all these years except for pure laziness

I never did have this problem.

Mainly because I only use KB+M and Xbox style controllers only.

Try answering this >>16715083 tell me how PC MK9 is reacting and how the detection works in it.

I'm actually interested in this info.

What exactly is the problem? The Xbox 360 dongle for PC will support all 4 players like in the Xbox specification. So I don't know what your local problem is.

I also played MK9 and MKX locally with friends and mixed Logitech and Xbox controllers (Xbox/dual shock style controllers) what games do have this problem for you? And with what hardware. Try interacting with me and answer me these questions.

>I have for old consoles for emulators

See >>16715069

If you have pure digital consoles emulated (no analog sticks) you can map the whatever the fuck you are using to the keyboard buttons and only start your translation program when you want to game. There are multiple ways of doing this having one layout for all games on the console or even different layouts for different games.

I'm saying this because I play old DOS games on the controllers for fun and not to fuck around with the keyboard only configuration I leave the keyboard in game settings alone and have a different profile to play this game in my translation software. This way I can swap between keyboard or controller and the game has no idea I'm doing this.

>GNU/Linux

Nice to see a linux bro.

>prefer Gentoo

The meme distro, I remember laughing when some Gentoo user needed to switch kernel flags and compile his kernel to run something while in my Mint it was configured from the start to be a out of the box experience.

I hear Xubuntu is perfect for gaming, not that I know.

Yea here is the problem. You are running the games in windows only with more steps and overhead and possibility of fuck ups.

Why not simply have windows on the damn thing and boot into windows? To play games?

I'm saying this because I run a 2 PC setup my linux PC is for my personal stuff and internet.

My win PC is basically a gaming console where I only game with no personal info and it runs on the native hardware.

I'm not against the idea but people have the tendency to do what they are used to. I think devs should make an option to disable controller inputs to future proof the game. Also, maybe acknowledge hybrid controls.

>Why is controller config on PC so retarded?

Because there has been no true standard for so long (relatively speaking), and then suddenly Microsoft decided it was time to standardize devices with Xinput. Xinput conveniently supports the exact configuration and number of buttons and axes as the 360 controller. That's why everyone's 360 controllers always work immediately without setup, and why everything else feels like it needs a guide. DS4 still uses Directinput. Generic controllers are all over the place with whatever they use. Flight sticks can't really use Xinput, since they have throttles and additional axes and analog features. Steam tries to handle all of the settings for you, which, in reality, just adds another layer of settings you have to mess with. The good part with Steam, as you pointed out, is that Big Picture can usually get the controllers to work properly together.

To answer your thread title more simply - controllers suck ass because Microsoft sells both controllers and software.

I fail to understand how this relates to my post.

Did you replay to the right person?

You see I was thinking the analog feature can send one of the more obscure signals of the mouse. From what I remember I think the specification says that the mouse can scroll vertically and horizontally.

So the analog stick can simply say its a scroll wheel with X and Y direction. I don't remember if there are more obscure parts of the specification having the capability to send more analog inputs.
