Is there any movement to bring back the golden era of arcade in game design?

I mean, I want to play games like arcades that I can plug and play for five minutes and then move to something else, and then play again for other five minutes.

Where are such games for PC?

Sure, there's the hyper casual phone game market, but I don't want to play on my phone.

Rogue

Lite

Probably not, everyone these days despises experimentation in things like control scheme. You'll never see another missile command with a roller ball controller because a mousr would be "better" when it would be a lot less fun. There's too much pretense about what certain input methods should do or be used for that people are unwittingly homogenizing everything. The golden age left long ago.

sure, but I meant arcade games that still has the spirit of the golden era but adapted for modern sensibilities.

I've seen some fun attempts like that jrpg that was about 30 seconds gameplay (Half minute hero).

Not real reason why you couldn't mix such concepts of arcade with a JRPG mechanics.

I like rogues and roguelites, they still hold some of the aesthetics of such era.

Plenty of shmups and danmaku still being made

Many simple indie games like Downwell

Many level-based indies like Hotline Miami, etc

But in my eye, the pinnacle of arcade design was a static stage or arena with a simple objective, with extra mechanics you can use to style and show off. Crazy Taxi, Monkey Ball, THPS, and Marble Blast come to mind. That approach to mechanics was merged with a singleplayer structure with DMC, and it was all downhill from there.

There are revivals of old games, but few original games with original mechanics that capture the feel of my favorite period of arcade (or arcade-like) games. P* is the closest, and even then I have to suffer through walky-talky sections in Bayo 2 and Revengeance and I want to die.

I think necrodancer captures the arcade game feel really well. I could see an arcade cabinet being made of it.

I am big fan of megaman zero series. I really miss them. There are some really good fan made games like megaman x corrupted.

Since megaman 11 is a success, we might see x9 and even zx3

Are you serious? There are more arcade like games coming out every year, than there are old arcade games worth playing. Did you even try to find arcade like games before making this shit thread? Monolith and Joymasher

It's like real time chess, and i just find it really fun. It has a surprising amount of depth too.

>I want to play games like arcades that I can plug and play for five minutes and then move to something else

You basically just described the entire design philosophy and function of mobile games. Why would you think you're special in wanting this? Ninety percent of normies do this exact thing, just as timewasters for a few minutes at a time when they're on the bus or on break at work or whatever.

ebea00  No.16702090

No one buys five-minute games anymore, grandpa.

well there's that intellivision thing coming out, probably bomb but i'm sort of intrigued

no, people only focus on pixelshit platformers, RPGmaker shit or ripoffs of old games but done poorly like all those metroidvainias

55f102  No.16702129

Will reiterate roguelites. Very different in design, but they carry that feeling of having one shot at something, with harsh consequences if you fail.

f492d5  No.16702276

As a trend, maybe. As part of a game design philosophy, not really. It's like how 3D animation took off and you rarely see 2D animation or claymation. They'd rather work with the new stuff than try to work with what they consider outdated, even if the fundamentals would actual make them a new medium to work with within the same category. We could be working with many different options but I think the modern game makers of the world are a generation out of what made the old games work and want to do their own thing. Which is fine if it leads to something new but it's based on emulating or deconstructing the past, rather than moving forward with past design philosophies. They also don't respect the past that would be a spiritual successor or loving tribute to what came before. I doubt they've even played 1,000 games minimum to understand game design choices and are just copying each other and winging it.
