Every Amiga platforming game. They have the added benefit of not being vaporware being crushed to death by feature creep.

Old computer platformers were frequently built around this kind of design, but a lot of those games don't hold up great.

Mega Turrican is more or less a port of Turrican 3. As far as I'm aware the only true console original Turrican, aside from ports that are so different they might as well be new games, is Super 2. Super 1 is more like a Frankenstein mix of Turrican 2 and 3 with maybe 1 or 2 original levels so maybe it counts too.

These same guys I think actually did a remake of Simon's Quest that's nice enough but when you kill the mansion bosses they let out this ear rapingly loud yell that, even on like 50% volume nearly blew out my fucking speakers. It was awful.

I think you can switch between them fairly freely without restarting a file, but not sure if that is just a debug feature. Least the feature is there so the dev might just let players do it.

The problem with Zero as a different character with special move sets is that they had to dumb down the level design substantially in order to make sure the stages could be handled by both characters. One of the consequences of this was that the Playstation levels are full of awful spectacle instead of interesting platforming. Zero is cancer, he should have stayed an unplayable narrative helper.
