I only have experience with 11 in Japanese, which so far hasn't been that hard. A lot of the dialog and menus are pretty simple, with the occasional difficult sentence or two and obscure term. Compared to other games I've played it's certainly easier. I'm guessing the other games would be similar in difficulty since the series tends to be pretty consistent based on the other games I've played from it. The game is quite good in general if you like JRPGs.

Anyone happen to have any recommendations for some stuff to read or watch on some basic Japanese mythology, history, and the like? In Japanese, naturally. Want to brush up a little so I can pick up on influences and references better.

It's a pretty top-tier English resource. I've recommended it a few times in the thread whenever appropriate. I've not made much use of the intermediate or advanced books myself as basic alone does a pretty good job setting you up for most things, including making the change to full-on Japanese resources, but I've still wanted to glance through them a bit just in case I'm missing out on some good nuance explanations like you brought up with the sometimes less in-depth stuff I often turn to now. So when does it get easier? Flash cards ain't enough. I'll give them credit by saying that I have a pretty sizable vocabulary because of them, but I can't really fucking USE any of it, and my ability to parse sentences sucks balls. The only good thing about all of this is that I don't have to spend so much time with a dictionary, but even so there's still a fuckton of words I don't know yet, so that ain't saying much. I'm not gonna quit the cards until the deck is done, because I've put so much of my time and energy into doing it, but I need something else to do now. Do grammar exercises. Try working through Genki's exercises (remember to do the ones from the reading section too), and try doing them with writing and audio, and if you need more you can try other textbooks in the sticky and the notes on MIT's website. Drilling flashcards won't help your spontaneous production and comprehension abilities beyond giving you more lexical items to use.

Try "Learning with Manga." Should be in the Starter Pack provided in the OP. It doesn't cover absolutely everything but it covers the most common of the grammar you'll be seeing. Have you only been doing like 3 or 4 new cards a day? You absolutely should have been doing much more than flashcards for the entirety of that time if you haven't been. Particularly getting in tons of exposure to the language, reading and listening which should have given you plenty of experience parsing sentences to where you should be at least half-decent at it, among other things. Passive learning through reading and such will even help your own ability to form sentences, although you will want to put some proper practice in on that front. So yes, do all of those things because you already should have been doing them.

If you like Nintendo and Zelda, Twilight princess has both kanji and furigana, on top of having easy grammar (since Nintendo games are aimed mostly at children). I practised with it some time ago but stopped due to a lack of time, but will commence again soon.

Look for games that target kids and have kanji+furigana.

After finishing Kana go read up on the grammar and then start reading up basic stuff like mangas, short stories or VNs.

Write down any Kanji you encounter and look it up on Jisho to get a hang of how to search and write it. Then practice those Kanjis everyday either using flashcards or just writing them.

After all that is done, go do a read through of whatever you picked again and see how fluidly you can finish it. Once you're confident with that piece of media, move on to a new one.

You need vocabulary along with grammar, and anki is one of the main tools people use for drilling vocab. You could use a pre-made deck like the Core2/6/10K ones, or make your own. The pre-made shit has the advantage of having all the work done for you, but you will likely be seeing tons of words in the deck that you don't actually see in real native material for some time, since there are way more words than those decks have and different material tends to use certain vocabulary more often. There is a "core" vocabulary of sorts, but it's likely much smaller than the typical Core deck. If you make your own deck you can fill it with words you come across often, making the words you study in the deck potentially more meaningful to your current progress and material. Of course that is more work upfront. Maybe you can even not use flashcards at all. I'm sure some people do, I've been using anki since I started though so I don't know what the best alternatives are. As for isolated kanji study, it can be helpful, but not at the expense of learning grammar and vocab too, so I wouldn't focus solely on just that.

When I first started I just read a few grammar guides, watched grammar videos, and started on a core deck. After a few months of that I started seriously trying to read with easier manga, and started studying kanji more in depth at some point too.

Except Kanjidamage trims the amount of kanji it teaches you to around the minimum amount that you need to live comfortably in Japan and still barely pass JLPT N1. Heisig teaches you kanji to the equivalent level of a Japanese university graduate.

Kanjidamage has around 1700 while Heisig is 2100 or 3000 with the 3rd book.

Learning radicals and using mnemonics are good methods. Kind of like the idea of generally learning them in an intuitive order that builds upon what radicals and such you already know, for learning more common characters, anyway. Otherwise I prefer a learn as necessity dictates approach. Learning kanji without also learning any vocabulary that use them, however, is a terrible idea and I think where most people using his method (I don't know if he actually endorses doing that or not) go wrong. When you're just starting out you can't really use the language to do much yet, or not very well, and so that beginner-level is where I think mnemonics can really shine but you should be prepping yourself to move on from that too. I'm not into Japanese learning, but I am very familiar with language learning in general, and I have to say Duolingo is only shit as a singular resource. It is a useful tool while learning a language, if only for light practice and vocabulary study. It's shit for grammar, and the philosophy is shit (like Rosetta Stone), but it doesn't matter, because you should be doing other things to practice and learn as well, particularly reading, writing, grammar study, and if you can, speaking regularly in the language.

Let me tell you, your learning is going to be shit unless you can find somebody to talk to regularly in the language. It's so much easier with regular discussion, preferably with a native.

They're all fundamentally really similar since they all descend from Latin. I learned French in school until eighth grade when I switched it to German and they're all so similar - and English so derivative of it - that learning one makes learning the rest extremely easy - similarities in syntax, and in German/French's case several words or terms completely interchangeable with one another. It's hard to say whether there's been an effect or not over just the course of a couple days, but either way in time you should slowly see less reviews as your present young cards begin to mature and require less frequent review. Hopefully your seemingly awful relearn rate will decrease with less on your platter. What are you currently doing in an attempt to learn them? Anyhow, you could try learning radicals if you haven't already. Being able to better recognize the smaller details of characters rather than just seeing the big picture might help. You don't have to be a kanji master right off the bat anyway so give yourself some time. The first few hundred tend to be the worst, after which it gets easier as you get used to them. Or so I found.

I find even writing the word alone (while just thinking or saying the reading/meaning) usually makes for a good enough boost to memory, though I don't even do that so much. The dashes are held sounds. Whether they actually indicate a different word or they are simply sound effects or verbal tics varies. Most of the time if the dashes are used with Hiragana it's just a drawn out word and the correct word would simply delete the dash. When it's done with Katakana it's usually part of the actual word, such as ゲーム. Some texts will also do the same effect with either additonal vowels or small vowels or both, you might see なあぁ at the end of sentences where all they mean is な.

And then there's the characters that randomly substitute ね or ねぇ. Hagel in Atelier Arland does that a lot, and I still haven't figured it out yet. I'm pretty sure he's substituting it for ない and な, but not always.

Atelier series. It's basically slice of life with light fantasy, so the subject matter is pretty easy to understand, and the main characters are usually pretty young so they tend to use simpler words and kanji. There are currently 8 games on PC alone (including the spinoff Nelke), and if you want to keep going after that there are at least a dozen you can emulate easily as well.

Does anyone else find it striking how much English makes it into Japanese media? Of course there's the English words that are officially adopted into the language, then there are the English words and phrases they like to say just to sound cool, but the most striking is how many menus and interfaces are just done in straight English across all versions of games. It shows that virtually every single Japanese person understands more English than nearly all native-English speakers understand of any other language. Give a random non-Hispanic American who took Spanish in high school a game interface in Spanish and they wouldn't understand a thing.

Sometimes I wonder if the Japanese language itself will survive another hundred years. Between how much they seem to like English and how bad their own literacy tends to be, and the demographic problems they have, I can see it just naturally fading away. I got to a point where I could usually split a sentence into words correctly even if I didn't understand them and then I started to really appreciate kanji.

The mixed script gives Japanese this really unique aesthetic where there are ebs and flows of visual content, and what's really cool is that the more visually complex a part of a sentence is, the more semantically meaningful it tends to be. A Japanese sentence is almost composed like a piece of art, where your eyes are drawn to important parts, with clean, curved symbols connecting them, but no breaks with nothing but space, because it isn't necessary.

What Japanese games have you guys been playing since we died?

I finished World of Final Fantasy (highly recommended), Dragon Quest Builders 2, FFX and X-2, Zelda Kamigami no Triforce, Bokujou Monogatari: Saikai no Mineral Town, and some other random games.

Finished Meruru, finished Lulua, now I'm stuck as far as a new game. There have been a few other things I worked on since, but nothing has satisfied my full criteria:

I keep running into partially voiced games mainly. Ryza has less than half of the dialog scenes voiceacted, Nelke turned out to be the same issue. I've also tried playing Octopath Traveler and a little bit of Demon Gaze on vita (an attempt to ween off of kanjitomo, main reason for the PC requirement other than not owning consoles). I had planned to play Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth on PC, but turns out they didn't include the Japanese text at all in the PC release. All three of those also run into the same limited voiceacting issue.

Translating pure text is just way more frustrating and I want to be able to hear how shit sounds, translating voice only is one of my longer term goals. I'd much rather use voices as a "crutch" over kanjitomo or furigana.

For me it worked like that for a short time. Now it's whatever I try to do, I just realize my vocab sucks. At least if it's written, I can easily look them up in a dictionary, unlike spoken text.

Yeah, here's how it usually goes. I see an unknown word, look it up, then instantly forget it. Repeat it a few times until I get tired of this shit and I add it to Anki. Now I just have to wait a month before I'll have a chance to recognize that word, if it ever pops up again.

Combine it with the fact that 5 new cards/day is the absolute maximum I can have without review times skyrocketing in a few days. (And even if I have less than 5 new cards, I have to stop them every now and then to get rid of the piled up cards). So yeah, I can only add a few important words to Anki, but you need to know thousands to read anything meaningful.
