It's my favorite genre. I really Gungrave Overdose, Max Payne, Vanquish, Ratchet & Clank and Advent Rising, so let's talk about this genre.

>Favorite game

Vanquish hands down. I love the way it handles cover more as a punishment or a cooldown rather than the entire game, and the movement of the game is just perfect for me. Overdose is very stylish and I like it too, but not as much as Vanquish and if Ratchet Gladiator/Deadlocked was slightly harder and more varied(and the PS2 was able to handle it) it would still be my favorite game

>Favorite weapon

Ratchet and Clank Deadlocked's twin raptors hands down

Are there any good indie TPS games? I don't think I've played an indie TPS unless Orcs Must Die counts. Did they give up entirely on R&C after the remake/movie? Do you think the Destroy All Humans remake will be any good? When's that new Gungrave game? When's Vanquish 2? Why did Max Payne 3 shove so many unskippable mini cutscenes during gameplay?

Talk about TPS vidya and why cover based shooters and their developers deserve an eternal lynching.

091eba  No.16669908

Also why do many anons on this board recommend binary domain? I admit to not having playing it but looking it up it just looks like a standard cover shooter+ locational damage because you're fighting bots. Is there more to it?

Supposedly it has decent story, characters and that stuff but i never got far into it because it was so damn clunky and shitty to play.

1fd515  No.16670196

His point stills stands, at least for me. TPS is a lazy genre to develop and gameplay mechanics are interchangeable between games except for very specific titles like Max payne or Vanquish.

Heck, half of the production values of a TPS are in it´s cinematics, you can watch them on youtube and you´d have experienced 75% of the title.

091eba  No.16670206

>>16670179

The Order and Uncharted could be fun if they were GOOD TPS games. The problem with these games is that cover is the entire game. It's not some pitstop to plan ahead your next move, it's not a vehicle for certain special moves(Think Vanquish's cig or the special vaulting moves that trigger slow motion), it's just the entire crux of the game.

Vanquish is clearly a TPS, just a better not lol cover XD shooter. Maybe if game devs would make TPS games but then add in some unique twist it'd be a better gameplay mechanic.

Cover Shooter TPS only really started being a mainstream AAA thing after Gears of Fags.

Before then there were tons of FPS games and all pretty unique, from MDK to 007 Everything or Nothing.

Even after it some pretty unique stuff still came up like Just Cause 2.

Gears ruined everything

>>16670506

The issue is that most are developed with the modern console audience in mind and so they're all run of the mill cover shooters or with have extremely streamlined mechanics.

Seriously, World War Z only stood out because it was essentially a Left4Dead clone, had no cover system and the tech they used for the waves of zombies is admittedly impressive.

But otherwise the game would be a generic TPS

I enjoyed The Suffering. It has a first person mode and a sequel which shits the bed on my machine™.

I replay one of the 2 Max Payne games every year or so, this year played it with an FPS mod which forced me to play it differently.

Red Faction Guerilla is a load of fun.

Just Cause 2 is similar in it's silliness, but I've only played through RFG once (26 hours, damn) and put over 40 hours into JC2.

Just Cause 3 is a fucking tragedy and there are no mods to fix it that I know of.

Saints Row 2 was a fun game to play while marathoning Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

InFamous was surprisingly decent. I did not expect a console shooter to have the balls to NOT include autoaim or aim assist in any capacity. Especially considering you have to deal with both hitscan and projectile weapons.

Yeah, brilliant game. Shame it's a ps3 maybe 4 exclusive. That game on the pc would be fucking amazing, but I don't think 3 got enough to warrant a sequel so the chances are unlikely.

Dead Rising is third person right? I shamefully must admit I've never played it, apparently it's good.

Gungrave is pure arcade action. The shooting doesn't even require aiming half the time if you know what you're doing. The camera is also a dead give away. Same thing with Tsukiyo no Saraba / 1000 Bullets.

>>16670506

Even then, it's not as much of a TPS as say, Resi4 and Evil Within, the two other Mikami games. It has some tells and design choices that at least makes it stand out. Then again I could be a giant retard and not simply recognising that Mikami pulled a God Hand on the TPS genre and I'm still processing it.

It's 30 FPS and fairly short, though it was $40 or so when it came out so that's the excuse for the length. The story is still pretty awful, more or less just a rehash of stuff in prior future games. Characters are still awful too, not funny and with multiple characters you're expected to care about but never will. The opening level is a god awful "cinematic" slog which sets up said story/characters, but the other planets are better. The nether platforming stages for Clank are a gimmick and more or less fine, but the controls are pretty awful since you have to use the analog stick for a 2D platformer. The weapons in the game are decent, at least. The raritanium upgrade system from Tools of Destruction is reintroduced. I don't care for it, but it's a lot better than how you would be lucky just to get an interesting L5 upgrade in Crack in Time since there's always at least one upgrade that changes how the weapon functions in some slightly meaningful way. The game has skill points, but around half of them are for the Clank Nether sections. I'd say that it's good enough that if you've played all of the other games then you may as well play this one too.

b36c9a  No.16672976

So why did Deadlocked and Up Your Arsenal feel different compared to going commando and the first game? It's like they used the same mission formats, the maps were very linear and just not fun to play around in compared to GC and the whole design felt like they made a multiplayer game and then later down the line decided it was a R&C game and made the singleplayer around those multiplayer maps.

I really want a modern R&C game, even if it's an indie furry title. I miss that sort of design and gameplay.
