Intel processors always had much better clock-per-clock performance for emulation (exception being maybe the P4 vs Athlon era) and I doubt that will change anytime soon. I wouldn't count on Ryzen's new gen.

Many emulators just use a single thread for emulation, for various reasons. With the exception of the Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 7 3700X, most AMD processors get trounced in single-thread benchmarks by even 4th gen i5's. The Ryzen 5 3600 is the new king of single thread performance though, so things could be changing.

RetroArch is ok. It brings a lot of really good things to the table, like unified shaders, unified save states, and simple controller configuration, but has a lot of retarded decisions like the RetroPad abstraction being insufficient for many controllers, a shitty labyrinthesque series of menus, and terrible handling of filesystem abstractions making simple things like selecting a hidden folder on a Unix/Linux system impossible.
It gets the job done most of the time, and it does most things better than most stand-alone emulators, and a few things a lot worse. It's worth using when it's the best choice, but don't try to make it your only emulator.

PS1 and a decent amount from the N64. Without a dedi, and with just an L2400 at 1.6GHz, you could try out the 5th generation, but I wouldn't expect smooth or glitch-free gameplay from the N64. As for PC games, try out
most games from the 90s might suit you well, you could definitely go and run dosbox and PC-98 games if those are your style.

Do you guys prefer having a separate emulation machine like a SBC, modded console or lower end PC connected to your TV or do you just do it all on your main rig? I want to emulate from 5th gen consoles and down, but every time Ive tried it on my rig I just lose interest even if the games are fun. Maybe tinkering with some machine used solely for emulation would motivate me to actually play my shit.
Maybe it also boils down to me just replaying stuff from my childhood to death because most old games I haven't played before just feel like clunky bullshit since I never got used to their mechanics due to being a lazyfag.

Zen 2 is going to have higher IPC than Zen 1/+ but even those architectures are actually pretty close to Intel in some tests. Intel mainly stays ahead via brute force clock speed advantage. Here's a relevant webm for you showing IPC comparison across a bunch of architectures, and if AMD is to be believed then you can toss in another 15% higher IPC on Zen 2 to these numbers.

I have an HP laptop from 2006 with identical specs. Probably same GMA 950 integrated gpu, too. Unfortunately your options are a bit limited.
>Emulation
Basically you're stuck with 4th gen and earlier, but even then you'll have to choose emulators carefully since nowadays most go for cycle accuracy and demand a lot more CPU power than 10 years ago.
For SNES for example, you'll have to use ZSNES or some very old build of Snes9x. PS1 might be doable if you use psX or some old version of ePSXe.
>PC games
I remember when I played the 6th gen GTA games on that thing. SA would run at around 20 fps with dips to 10s, with most graphic settings dialed down. VC and 3 are more playable, reaching up to 30 fps with dips in the 20s.
I tried Far Cry 1 on it, it was unplayable. Got single-digit fps even with all graphic settings on very low + AA disabled + texture filtering disabled.
GZDoom runs perfectly fine and can give 60 fps as long as you turn down / disable most of the fancy effects. I've also played Deus Ex, NOLF1, Daikatana, Max Payne 1 & 2, and a few Touhou games on it, these ran well.
This should give you an idea of what games it can run. Most PC games made until 2003 should be playable.

use the wiki and dont be a faggot: https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Super_Mario_Sunshine
now dont fucking touch anything in the fucking config. if you broke it, go to \Documents\Dolphin and go through and delete everything except the saves folder. if you didn't save any games yet, just delete the whole fucking Dolphin folder in Documents. now never touch anything ever except the resolution and everything should work. sunshine in particular appears to have a crashing issue, so right click the game in your game list and hit properties and enable Synchronize GPU. you're done.
oh and one more thing you piece of fucking trash, right click the game in your game list, go to the confirm tab, and calculate the md5. now check it here: http://redump.org/disc/1873/

Go in more detail on this. Where do I actually have to browse here? I hit properties when I'm in Dolphin I hit "File>Open>" I then select Properties when I right click and I'm fucking lost as there's no option for synchronize GPU. press the config button at the top, then go to the "Paths" tab, then hit the "add" button, then add the directory to where you keep your gamecube/wii isos. then go back to the main window and hit "refresh". all your games are now listed alphabetically in a nice list. then you right click the game in the list and hit "properties" on the dropdown to open the place for gpu sync. it's right in front of you on the main tab in properties. but like >>16683794 said that shouldnt be the issue because it's automatically set most likely.
your issue is probably an issue with having a bad dump like i said. this means that when the game was ripped from the original disc, it didnt copy properly. you check this by right clicking the game in the list again, hitting properties again, then look at the top of the window that pops up and go to the "verify" tab. then hit the big "verify integrity" button at the bottom. in the box for MD5, check that it's exactly "0c6d2edae9fdf40dfc410ff1623e4119" and report back. if it's not it's a bad dump.
if it matches that exactly, the next thing to try is updating your graphics drivers. dolphin uses every feature of your fucking graphics drivers because the developers snort mad meth, so you need to keep your drivers updated to use dolphin.

ive played nearly the entire library of gamecube games and all of them matched redump's md5s, and all of them were playable. so from personal experience i can say that redump's md5s are all trustworthy for gamecube games, and also all the sources i used on the internet give good dumps with a matching md5. so i can assure you that there are valid dumps floating around for every gamecube game, just change the site you use. if your md5 doesnt match (and you aren't using dolphin's compression which changes md5), dont play it.

Some of the playable list you cannot actually complete because they relied on a community report system where mouthbreather playing 10 minutes of a game and not seeing major issues thought it was playable.
See Stuntman for example.
There's actually not that many games that are straight up fucked relatively speaking though.

Not relevant
In PCSX2 the heaviest parts of the game is the opening, the first Ardjet fightb (mostly when you get close if she's firing her laser), cutscenes in general and the second Anubis fight, now scram also technically unleashing a flurry of homing attacks straight into walls especially rock / ice ones but that's not very gameplay relevant
For a frame of reference the large battle part runs at around 70-90fps on my build, whereas most of the other parts I named range closer to ~45-55fps, the second Anubis fight however dips all the way down to ~35fps or lower.
Also as for why that is it's because PCSX2 has a few bottlenecks in the renderer that makes it very CPU dependent for a few tasks even on HW rendering, one of those is handling many palettes, ZoE 2 uses a trick where there's a single megatexture for many objects but it applies different palettes to small parts of that megatexture so you have have several thousand palettes in a single scene, heavy scenes usually use more palette than others.

Are there any decent emulators out there yet for Xbox, Xbox 360, or PS3? There's some interesting system exclusive games I don't feel like shilling out $100+ for.
I typically emulate for SNES, PS1, and GameCube, I've been trying out PS2 emulation with Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. It's not perfect, but it's suitable for RPGs like that one. Haven't tried any action games yet, but I also own a fair bunch on the original hardware, so that's what I prefer. I only use emulation as a means for games I don't own, but I've also stopped buying video games unless I can find them for reasonably cheap.

XBOX emulation is making progress but it's really fucking spotty right now, you can play a few games if you don't mind more or less major issues
x360 is a bit farther along, and some games do work insanely well, provided you have a Win10 computer and some decent hardware to back it up as only the DX12 renderer is worth using right now.
PS3 has RPCS3, it's still work in progress but the requirements are really high for now and it's also really work in progress, but it's getting there, you can play quite a few games if you really want but most of the high profile exclusive aren't gonna work well.
>>16698543
PS2 is meh, most games work, but you have a ton of small issues (that aren't always fixable) that will shit all over your experience, if you can quell your tism about small graphical bugs it's usually fine enough, requirements are all over the place from 2007 toaster to 2019 top of the line
NGC works decently on first party titles minus a couple, when you go third party though is where shit gets really bad sometimes
XBOX is very very WIP in comparison, it'll get better once the XQEMU people get their thumbs out of their asses and actually finish implementing the performance fixes and sound emulation like they said they would because CXBXR is a nice effort but it's always gonna be a dead end.

Retroarch has its problems but it's as good as the core you use. It's memory card system is retarded, for one. Each disc has its own memory card, so you have to jump through a bunch of hoops for multi disc games, it's especially bad if you have to go back and forth between discs.

I mean, I realize they're emulating the underlying hardware, but upon getting the game to run (even at 2 fps) what's the biggest hurdle stopping people in optimizing the engine? Do console hardware devs make some purposefully intricate way of handling minor shit that results in a more complex architecture?

>sacrificing the ability to change some settings midgame
You've already been able to do that in practically every emulator's WIMP GUI for decades. Unless you mean pausing the game to bring up a menu that can be controlled using a controller, not to mention RetroArch's heavy reliance on opaque keyboard shortcuts that commonly recommended modern console gaypads don't have any spare buttons to map to.
>CLI / Skeletonkey
One of the primary reasons for LibRetro giving emulator authors free frontends was supposed to be eliminating the need to resort to CLI as well as editing/creating opaque undocumented .cfg files in opaque undocumented invisible directory trees, all of which must perfectly comply with opaque undocumented syntax.
>Skeletonkey
…and the need to rely on launchers that don't actually integrate tightly enough with frontend-less emulators to configure them properly.

Wii U has 2 main advantages for emulation:
>native interlaced NTSC/PAL/SECAM SDTV & analog EDTV/HDTV component for CRTfags
>runs GCN/Wii software flawlessly on hardware using hacked loaders, including homebrew and ROM injected VC
>reasonably powerful for running emulators
The downside is that no homebrew SDK ever gained features like hardware accelerated OpenGL, and the homebrew scene was overall pretty meager, so you're mostly going to be running Wii homebrew (though faster than on an actual Wii, since vWii can be run at 60% higher clockspeed than a real Wii).
>Does it do N64 well enough to be playable?
Yes, both injecting ROMs into the Wii U's VC, and a good Mupen64 port for the Wii. As for the rest of 5th-gen, there's a reasonably decent PCSX port (PlayStation emulator), but the Yabause port (Saturn emulator) isn't up to snuff.
>>16705193
>what's the biggest hurdle stopping people in optimizing the engine?
LLE vs. HLE, that is, actually attempting to recreate the original console in software for games to run on, instead of creating abstractions that trick games into running more like native PC ports. The former approach (LLE) is less buggy and easier to design but much slower, while the latter approach is much faster but harder to debug and design.
In particular, Citra is still mostly reliant on static interpretation rather than dynamic recompilation, and its graphics are done using an outdated OpenGL subsystem rather than a more elegant Vulkan one. Also, there is the issue of shaders, which Citra does not precompute, and provides no mechanism to share between versions.
>Do console hardware devs make some purposefully intricate way of handling minor shit that results in a more complex architecture?
Multiprocessor designs present in all modern consoles are much more demanding to emulate, yes, because of difficulties in synchronizing emulated components, and difficulty in synchronizing multithreaded access to physical hardware in modern host PCs. This is why the few older consoles that used complex multiprocessor designs (Saturn, PS2, PS3) are so much harder to emulate than their architecturally simpler competitors.

How are they opaque when they are all configurable right from the interface? and all have a description or explicit name?
And it doesn't rely on htem any more heavily than any tehr emulator for the same functions
And it's not like not having enough button s to map all commonly used hotkeys isn't a problem you're going to have on every single emulator for a console with many buttons anyways except for the part where RA has a modifier key system that allows you to just use one key and have 24 hotkey right on your standard x360/dualshock layout controller which as far as I know isn't a thing anywhere else
>One of the primary reasons for LibRetro giving emulator authors free frontends was supposed to be eliminating the need to resort to CLI
Wrong, the interface is the smallest part of what RA handles for you if you use it
>as well as editing/creating opaque undocumented .cfg files in opaque undocumented invisible directory trees, all of which must perfectly comply with opaque undocumented syntax
I'm not eve sure what you're referring to, most cores just use the base config file (retroarch.cfg) for generic setting and another for core specific option (retroarch-core-options.cfg), maybe you mean whatever happen when you use per game / core oveerrides but that does not make it obscure or invisible since those are just a copy of the above two config files
All of which is documented
>and the need to rely on launchers that don't actually integrate tightly enough with frontend-less emulators to configure them properly.
Skeletonkey literally has every single setting you can touch from the regular interface in the launcher and maybe even the few CLI only ones like video recording, what exactly are you talking about?

Pretty sure you can use other bluetooth controler on the WiiU now (think DS3/DS4 etc) and regardless a WiiU pro controller isn't that pricy
As for N64
https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/WiiU_VC_N64_inject_compatibility_list
Although that doesn't cover homebrew emulator which have slightly different compatibility.
Usually you can alsop refer to Wii homebrew, it the Wii has it the WiiU has it and I'm pretty sure the Wii has CPS3 running fairly well.
As for it being worth it, it's gonna come up to
>do you have a Wii
>do you care about WiiiU games
>do you care about DS VC game injection
>do you care about the small difference in emulation potential compared to a Wii
>do you care about HD output / playback (to use the WiiU as a local network media streaming box for example)
>is the price right considering the above (including a pad and a DS VC game for CBHC)

From what I've heard, you can't really go wrong with any of the Story of Seasons games (Reason why I say this is that Natsume took the Harvest Moon name and started developing their own games under the titles rather than continue localizing SoS. What this means is that all HM games since 2014 are, essentially, half-assed clones, while SoS is the original series.). For example, the two I have interest in playing are Friends of Mineral Town and Innocent Life.

I'll definitely give some of these a try. I recommend you try out Zoids Battle Legends even if you aren't a fan of the animated series. I had a buddy who introduced me to the game way back and it's a highly under rated title. You can completely customize your Zoid and fight other Zoids. It has a fuck load of content from what I rememeber and very smooth controls. I can't speak for the story, or how long it takes to progress because I only played 2 player battles with him, and he had almost everything unlocked with probably over 1k hours in the game. The main thing I am worried about emulating GB games is getting used to button queues. I use a 360 controller, and PS buttons are engraved in my mind, but the gamecube controller is it's own beast.

i remembered liking 64ds when i was a kid and bought a copy of it and now i despise it because of stylus analog or trying desperately to use the dpad. dunno how much worse it would be with an emulator trying to click for the stylus while jumping with the keyboard. maybe you can do some tricky mapping of buttons to the touchscreen, idk, but it seems pretty awful. i'd stick to n64 personally.

I've been dicking around with a randomizer for Wind Waker lately, since it's my favorite Zelda game and I keep getting the itch to play it off and on. The randomization's pretty fleshed out with plenty of options, and the sheer amount of autism that's gone into the cosmetic function with modelswaps is impressive. Sure, there's a few shitty meme options, but it's still pretty neat that people not only figured out how to swap existing models and import new ones, but also add custom voices and item models for some skins. Plus, it works as a modular system using folders, so you can easily just shitcan the crap ones via folder deletion and keep the others.
Download for the randomizer is on this autist's github: https://github.com/LagoLunatic/wwrando/releases
Models are here on a different autist's github: https://github.com/Sage-of-Mirrors/Custom-Wind-Waker-Player-Models
Mind you, I have no idea if either of these people/groups are massive drama queen faggots, nor am I willing to spend the minimal effort on uploading it myself on a service which requires an account/finding a non-account service because I'm a lazy fuck, so hopefully they're not.

use vulkan or d3d12. it's the only game in dolphin that needs those backends to run faster than 50% on nearly anything. the backend doesnt matter for any other game besides this one in particular. though, it's supposed to have gotten much better since all the video backends were merged this year, so if you're using the latest dev build ( >>16683540 ) and vulkan and it's not performing, try this.
right click the game in your list, and hit properties, then it'll have two sets of tabs at the top. on the lower set of tabs, change over from "general" to "editor", then add the following to the "<ID>.ini" that has more characters:
[Video_Hacks]
EFBAccessEnable = False
this does the same thing as checking "skip efb access from cpu" in settings but wont fuck up other games in case you forget to turn it off again. that should help the framerate.

F-Zero GX runs 60fps@1080p for me using the dx11 renderer, but it has lots of random, occasional stuttering that ruins the experience. Random stuttering is more often related to cpu or ram bottlenecks rather than gpu rendering, and changing the renderer really doesn't help in my case when I tried.
I remember it running better (with much less stuttering) on much older versions. If I was going to play it serious I'd try some version from 2017 or even 5.0.0.

have you tried enabling async ubershaders and enabling "compile shaders before starting"? "stuttering" is usually the shader cache, and ubershaders was designed to fix that. you can entirely rule out the shader cache if you run it with async skip drawing along with precompilation. it's right on the front page of graphics settings under backend on any version of the emulator released in the past two years or so.
if those dont work then it's a cpu issue. i'd even try running in single core too to see if that fixes the stuttering.

I made a script awhile ago that basically selected a random playlist in your playlist folder, then selected a random line from the playlist, then found the game filename on the line, and finally passed the game filename to Retroarch. It had some issues. Firstly, Retroarch expects you to specify a core when loading a ROM from the command line, which is fucking retarded, like, why the fuck couldn't they just have it load up the core selection screen if no core is specified? And secondly they changed the formatting for the playlist files since then. It's a fucking mess

Hoarding is a mental illness anon. A collection is supposed to be an amalgamation of things you like, not the quantity of things you've never touched. All those V1.0's are probably outdated before you ever played them.

Alright so I re-wrote the script so that it now works again with the newer playlist format (ie. I just lazily used string manipulation)
Now I'm stuck here
retroarch.exe -v -L "DETECT" %_randomrom:~8,-1%
The ROM file parses successfully, however, Retroarch is being retarded
[ERROR] RetroArch is built for dynamic libretro cores, but libretro_path is not set. Cannot continue.
There is currently NO WAY to pass no-core to the command line and just have it bring up the core select screen. This level of oversight is kind of shocking but I can't program worth shit so I guess I have no room to talk but it's unbelievably frustrating since the functionality does exist. the following is what a default playlist entry looks like;
{
"path": "D:\\Games\\ROMs\\No-Intro 2018\\Atari - 2600\\Zoo Keeper Sounds (USA) (Proto).zip#Zoo Keeper Sounds (USA) (Proto).a26",
"label": "Zoo Keeper Sounds (USA) (Proto)",
"core_path": "DETECT",
"core_name": "DETECT",
"crc32": "AE15C45D|crc",
"db_name": "Atari - 2600.lpl"
},
Notice the "core_path" entry. Why can't I pass that to the command line? Why is this shit so complicated?

Nice backpedal. Continue hoarding those romhacks though. Those die every year. I'm sure you're "preserving culture" by keeping things locked up.
But you expect everyone to just answer your questions you're clearly too stubborn to ask without going through the motions of forming a question. That's a mentally ill hoarder's mentality for ya. Continue attempting to insult those more intelligent than you. You're simply not preserving any culture and are only hoarding things you never touch because you're mentally ill.

These standards were made way before home consoles or even resoluton concerns were a thing.
Their specs are just a consequence of how they were built out of IRL concerns, their limitations and flaws like any tech, came around much later on.

IIRC 60Hz in North America was chosen because in the early days Westinghouse was marketing AC to industrial clients and most AC was generated from coal or hydroelectric which are slow to respond to increasing/decreasing load on the line and industrial clients typically used electrical power for motors in mills and factories to replace steam engines thus were more sensitive to changes in AC frequency. The target frequency was basically 50Hz plus a 10Hz overhead to account for frequency losses. Nikola Tesla also believed 60Hz at 120v was much more efficient and light bulb manufacturers liked it because it resulted in less flicker than 50Hz. It was a perfect storm that came together. Europe stuck with 50Hz likely because they had no real international grid back then and 50Hz was just easier to specify.

I was digging through my computer, and it appears I backed up a lot of my older SD cards back when Owned a Cyclo;
I have every DS game, Gameboy and Gameboy Color and NES games on the old /v/'s recommendation wiki prebundled if anybody wants them, it's about 15 to 16 gigs worth of stuff, not sure where to even upload em' aside from MEGA, Tempted to dig through some of my other memory cards to see what else I ended up backing up.

Simple answer:
You don't.
Either play it on an actual 3DS or emulate it on your computer. Buying a phone for anything beyond calling and texting people (And, possibly, listening to music and/or taking pictures) is a waste of money.

Playing the old Resident Evil Outbreak with a couple of friends, the game is really great and I'm surprised at how much it holds up. It was definitely a game ahead of its time though and I really hope that capcom gives it another try. Felt like the game just released at the wrong time and judging it solely on it's single players aspects makes it seem more mediocre than it actually is.

There's no buyfag thread up and I don't have an OP to make one, figured this would be the second best place to ask. Where's a good place online to buy older games, like PS2, where I won't get jewed? I saw this and about took a shit.

Not trying to be a cunt but if you don't want to get jewed just pirate that shit? You can spend hours upon hours to look for something slightly cheaper but is your freetime worth that money? If Google can't find you the cheapest price possible for any product given, what makes you think this place can? It's 200 bucks and none of it will go to the creation of anything you care for. So it's just a waste of money. Am I wrong?
