Jade Cocoon 2 is interesting. It's still turn based and at first it seems pretty basic (fire is for attacking skills, earth is for defensive skills, water is for healing, wind is for status) and it takes a bit to get familiar with it. That said, I strongly suggest you play JC1 before going too far in JC2. The story is in fact a sequel.

It's very high quality. The story is solid enough but the characters are wonderful and the gameplay is very entertaining. The main complaint is that people would bitch "hurr, the battle is RNG!", but the battles actually have an air to them like the regular monster hunter games.
