Some years back, there was some video or article that mentioned FPSes are a bit limited in what is considered "safe" forces to mow down in numbers, since FPS games tend to need an army of baddies. Aliens were one, zombies, too. Faceless oppressive minions was another easy one. If Nazis were so bad, then why did the US import so many of them after the war? Why did the US leave so many Nazi leaders in place to continue their political positions? Why were US military and airmen working side by side with former Nazi soldiers they had just been fighting almost immediately after the war, rebuilding Germany.
There's good answers to all of those that being, Communists are worse than Nazis.
Maybe I'm just an oldfuck, but I remember growing up and Nazis only being the "bad guys" in a more nationalistic sense. Yeah, there was acknowledgement and condemnation of the atrocities, but there was more a sense that that's part of war. Shit, there were still a few Civil War veterans around in the 30's - so people knew damned well how Americans could treat other Americans at places like Andersonville and Elmira. That kind of shit wasn't so far out of the public consciousness that it shocks people in nearly the same way it does today. The thing that was shocking about it back then was the claimed scale - and that's probably more a reaction to the industrialization of cruelty, rather than the cruelty in and of itself.
It wasn't until the late 80's and 90's that Nazis started to really get pushed as fundamentally "Evil" by Hollywood that I remember - especially by Spielburg who stripped out all traces of nuance and humanization from them. Even the old war films made Nazis threatening as a contrast for the hero of the film to rise above, again playing more to nationalism and exceptionalism, and didn't just make them cartoonishly evil. Then once that road was paved by Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, and Saving Private Ryan - video games went apeshit using Nazis as the go-to generic badguy for an easy sell (especially around 1996~2001) that you were allowed to shoot without soccer moms getting their pearls in a twist.

It's actually gotten worse since the WW2 generation died off. If you watch old war films, there's generally an understanding that while the Germans were our enemies, they were still just men. These days, you'd think that everyone in Germany transformed into some kind of demon between the years of 1939 and 1945.
