Which video game character - or in some cases, which version of a video game character - has the best walk cycle animation(s)? Bonus points to non-fighting game examples since they're the most prominent as far as unique walking styles go.

Thinking about it some of the animations in those old mocap sprite games can be ridiculous. In particular, Batman Forever has some really ridiculous ones on the mains and their enemies. The crotch chainsaw is the one everyone knows but there's also a green bubble thing that temporarily bloats your character, the gliding move and roll looks dumb, the clown enemies can sometimes juggle you with their feet or stun you with a horn, and probably others. Timecop has plenty of that sort of dumb animation but not quite on that level. Also I guess Michael Jackson's Moonwalker has some nifty attack variety.

Rotoscoping is the process of filming life action visuals, then animating on top of them (old Disney movies like Snow White). Digitizing is the process of taking live action frames and representing them in the game (such as in old Mortal Kombat games).

The Guardian Legend's main character had some great animations for an NES game. She had walk cycles for all 8 directions, which was a rarity for primitive NES games. Other games like Zelda and Final Fantasy would let their main character walk/face in 4 directions, but not 8.
To my knowledge, The Guardian Legend and also StarTropics 2 were the only two NES games that did 8 directional walk cycles.

Actually, it's only "half" rotoscoped. The animators wanted every character to be as expressive as possible, so some of the animations they perform are either really hard to perform in real life if not dangerous or impossible. They added a ton of little things to make the characters believable while still cartoonish.

Oh? I thought it was all 3D in that video. The low fps is probably to match the 2D animation, or as an artifact of anime CGI made that way for the same purpose.

damn, looking at all the hard work that went into it, I really appreciate the 3D models more now. I also see the guy's decision making process, that if they just keep doing more hi rez 2D sprites, they'll end up in competition with themselves with what they're doing with BlazBlue.
Although I love hand drawn 2d sprites, I can see how there's are strengths to the 3D artstyle, you can play around with the camera for the cutscenes & supers for more dynamic impact

Are you asking why a Guilty Gear game doesn't have the characters animate like Tekken characters? Please tell me you're joking.
>>16678859
3D models also age way better than sprites, both in an artistic sense and a technical sense. Some of the older GG sprites like Sol and Ky have been reused for the better part of two decades (original GG, then some small changes to GGXX and its iterations), and others like Dizzy's idle animation are just wonky due to her neck attaching almost a foot past her spine. Due to their low base resolution relative to modern displays, they don't scale well, which isn't a problem with 3D models.
Skullgirls had a similar problem with its sprites, although they will likely scale better due to their higher resolution and detail. Every time the devs realized some move needed a hitbox/hurtbox adjustment or a change in functionality, they had to "make it work" with the animation they already had, even if it didn't make sense. There's this weird middle ground where many moves have almost 1:1 accurate hitboxes to the sprite animation, but then you have moves like Fillia's j.HP which is a tiny hitbox inside a much larger animation.
To draw a comparison in Xrd, Ky's 2S used to look like trash and it wasn't very obvious what the move's purpose was. Instead of redrawing new sprites, the devs were able to add a visual slashing effect to the move so it's much more noticeable in a match.

I wouldn't go that far. That sort of TECHNOLOGY has shown up in budget fanservice games, I've seen thighs at least. Also while unusual, it's not unheard of for real game developers to do fanservice details especially if Japanese. Think Ashley's subtle bouncing breasts and detailed panties in RE4.

Most of them are used for the various characters and NPCs in the game since they have a similar skeleton, probably a side-effect of having everyone fight in the same way with only their individual aggression and weapon moveset changing things up. Only a few of the sillier ones like zombie are for flavour. The upside is (You) can unlock every character and NPCs avatar to play as, as well as the different voice types and all the weapons clothes and underwear. Plus free DLC stuff that ties into the culture like a Nep dakimakura weapon and playable Dejiko. However one detail that was definitely just for fun is the different ways to strip enemies, video related. Best one is tickling them but there's also a great one with wrestling moves including a suplex, and one with moves from anime/vidya (Hokuto Zankai Ken!) unfortunately using them slows combat down a fair bit but they're nice for flavour now and again.
