I loved playing in the arcades and I'm happy they're sort of coming back.
My favorite arcade games tend to be fighting games and racing games. I love Waku Waku 7 and Daytona USA. But I also really like Puzzle Bobble and 80s arcade games like Burgertime.

When I was in high school, there was a small arcade beside my school and I used to skip class to go play there. It was the smallest arcade I've ever been to but they had an all-star lineup of games and I miss it every day.

Cause around my town there's a shopping mall which recently decided to boot up MAME machines disguised as cabinets allowing freeplay and people (even the goddamn fornite dancing kids) fucking loved Metal Slug, Puzzle Bobble, 1941 and Street Fighter 2, it was insane seeing boomers and kids having the time of their lives playing fucking 1941

The idea is that arcades are "retro" now, and that never goes out of style to normalfags. As the years go on they'll probably only be in greater demand.

I don't know if this is a universal thing but all the barcades I've been to are pretty shit. If it isn't generic arcade stock you'd normally expect from a place that doesn't give too many fucks about arcade machines but still wants a quick buck, or fucking phone game machines, it's incredibly safe shit like Pacman and Space Invaders. Also they do that thing where you pay with digital casino chips so that it's harder to quantify exactly how much you're spending on the games, which is really gay.

Those are usually chain restaurant arcades or movie theater arcades. And some of them aren't that bad I mean the ones here still have Tekken and Street Fighter. But all the barcades here take coins like they did in the 90s so there's still hope.

All the ones I've been to have specified their arcade in their advertising, and they have sport bars. They're barcades. The most unique arcade game I've seen in one of those things is a SHMUP where you play as a dragon, but that's on a compilation machine from a charity organization, also the stick is pretty shitty. I think you just lucked out wherever you live.

Heck you just reminded me of one of my fondest arcade memories. It was at some bowling alley at a kid's party, bowling is tedious as fuck when there's like thirty or so people taking their time to play, so me and a couple of close buds went to the allotted Arcade area, used to be full of cool shit but now it's just a couple remnants and druggies/niggers, anyhow we went to one of those Duck Races Derby machines (you know, the scammy ones where you're supposed to lose all the time) which could let up to 4 people place their own bets, so we had this brilliant idea after watching a couple of kids lose all their tokens to fully exploit the system: we shared a pool of very limited tokens, then we had one "head" better that would place the highest, riskiest payoff the game could offer on the first placed duck, while the other three kids had Placed Bets (basically calling which two out of the five competing ducks would reach first and second place, without an order) on the top three most likely combinations, essentially we created a system where losing was almost impossible, 80% of the time we would gain anywhere from 0.8 to 1.2 times our initial betting, but 10% of the time we'd go home with times 20 that amount, so w essentially started bankrupting the machine and the staff, without being able to figure out how to stop it, just went ahead and slapped an Out Of Order sticker on it.
Shit was fucking awesome, we ended up with so many tokens that even after all this time I think I still have 20-30 laying around my room in hidden places. Good times.

It's universal. A barcade can never be anything more than a theme bar. The arcade portion of it can never survive and is never taken seriously, and the cost of maintaining a bunch of old donkey kong cabinets probably cuts into it's quality as a bar too.

Played the shit out of Bosconian, my friends had a Plug-N-Play of it and it was all I would play when I visited them. Sucked at it but I had fun. Dig Dug was also my personal favorite, Xevious was also great.

Penetrator for TRS-80 had a final mission where you had to drop a bomb on the base or else you would continue flying right into a wall. That's probably not what you were thinking of, but one game might have inspired the other.

Your betting machine story reminds me of the month that Parent magazine (free publish distributed usually at the library or grocery store) put a "double tokens up to $10" coupon in the back. Me and some friends grabbed as many copies as we could. The coupons required an arcade attendant to witness your $10 regular tokens (gold color) purchase to redeem your $10 bonus tokens (black color). So we just had 1 person buy $10 in golds at the machine, redeem the coupon for $10 in blacks with the attendant, and then pass the $10 in golds to the next friend. Rinse and repeat.

The problem is that "a few generations" catches up pretty damn quick if everyone's doing it. At the time Street Fighter 2 was brand new, and we were freshman in high school. So for us the arcade was a bigger return on the investment than buying/renting a console game (which we obviously did also). A few of us, including myself, eventually had part-time jobs at that arcade. It was a popular enough spot to have local, regional, and IIRC one national tournament for fighting games and pinball. The most popular games were SF2, SF2:Turbo, SSF2, MK, MK2, MK3, Virtua Fighter 2, VF3, VF4, Samurai Shodown 1-4, Tekkens, etc etc etc… $.50 per play went a long ways based on the following motto:
