What's the consensus on motion controls in racing games?

its a gimmick.

The problem with all motion controls is the lack of feedback. Thus the only thing they're really good for is aiming, as with a gun.

They solved the feedback issue in the mid 90s and then immediately forgot how to do it right by the time the PS2 rolled around.

Comming from someone that owns a Wii and played with both the wiimote and a GC controller, motion controls are hot garbage. Either get an actual steering wheel and pedals or just use a joystick like everyone else. Motion controls are inaccurate and more often than not they distract you because the thing can't detect very tiny movements and it feels weird, you are trying to make some tiny change in direction but it doesn't actually detect it so you lose focus of what's going on screen.

Since I have played MKWii 10 years ago I cannot get used to normal controls in any racing game no matter how hard I try, something feels a little bit off for me. Even though it was a gimmick, I really liked it, and I like it to this day.

Fine for party type games with friends/family. Horrible for everything else.

If done right then HD rumble can work for haptic feedback. That said I'm down with peripherals built around the game rather than a one-device-to-play-them-all. I keep thinking of next gen controllers having built in touch screens or phone holders, gyro, and haptic rumble. That controller isn't a substitute for holding a toy rifle, pointing, and shooting it.

The Wii was hot garbage but the Switch joycons are some next level shit. They're very accurate and never need to be re-calibrated. The beef-frying minigame in Super Mario Party provides 1:1 motion control where the joycon is the handle of the frying pan, and it works so goddamn well they could make an entire cooking game like that and I'd buy it no question.

Motion control works best went it supplements normal control schemes, not when it replaces a button, or analogue stick.

>supplements normal control schemes, not when it replaces a button, or analogue stick

what is your opinion of splatoon not giving you control of vertical aiming, but still letting you aim horizontally, with the right stick?

A shitty thing to do but it was alright when I remember playing that game. The strength of gyro controls over analogue is their ability to make snappy movements, like a mouse can, or the wiimote pointer. This is one of the things nintendo was trying to show with star fox zero. Which could of worked if they didn't do that tablet view shit. That and if made the r-stick control the camera.

Oh my god I know why they called it star fox zero, and it's not because it's a reboot/prequel it's because 'zeroing' is another way of saying calibration. God damn what a fucking dad joke.

Imprecise and garbage. Gyro sensors aren't precise enough for steering and they have to incorporate a lot of slop into it to compensate for people moving the controllers around a lot.
