The BELMONTS make a return as the "revenant" in Bloodstained: RotN. On his character page, the "brave demon" is said to hold the power of the whip and his image is surrounded by a circular (energy?) wheel which says dracula and has a bat made on it. Could anyone else please confirm what else is written there?

Also, this game is the best Metroidvania by far. Castlevania SotN cannot compare. Easily a 9.5/10. It has about 20 hours worth of content on the first playthrough.

b93cbb  No.16621917

Since 2007 people have developed a bad habit of shitting all over older franchises. Unless it's Mario, Zelda or some other oddity, you are pretty much guaranteed bad reviews for any franchise older than 2007

This is because of a literally unholy alliance of Xbots, Sony Ponies, companies that pay shills, CoD fanboys and similar gamers who want to berate and demean every franchise that came before CoD 4: MW.

In fact, most reviewers of today have their roots in the mid-late 2000s when the console wars were at their peak and people were bullied into supporting Xbox 360 or PS3 over the Wii. The mildest form of abuse was ridicule, and the more harsher forms included verbal abuse, emotional abuse and social isolation.

There is literally a social apartheid against classic gamers, niche gamers, Nintendo fans, SEGA fans so much so that Jim Sterling deliberately gave BOTW a low score to bring it down from 98 on metacritic, all the while calling Nintendo a shit distributor and fuckhead toymaker. Metacritic's boss (a slave of the Xbot/Pony site called Gamespot) soon praised Jim Sterling for his abuse.

While the ultimate goal of most may only be to show the superiority of FPS, realistic racers etc., deliberately damaging the review scores of other franchises will cause their eventual death. In fact many franchises have already been killed by these ponies. And many of them want to see all who threaten their dominance destroyed.

>3D is creatively used for one of the exploration powers though

No its not. Hard to guess which power you are even thinking of since none of them use 3d at all, but I guess I'll just go through all of them:

>Handicraft

Pick up an object and move it. Only works on a couple very specific objects, otherwise it can be used as a low damage attack (not the object, just the giant hand). Has nothing to do with 3d envirnments and would work perfectly in 2d.

>Double Jump

It's a fucking double jump. You can also bounce off enemy heads and breakable torches

>Reflector Ray

My first guess of what you were talking about. Laser beam reflects off the environment and teleports you to the endpoint. Uses strictly 2d hitboxes for reflections.

>Aqua Stream

Propel yourself in water. Fully 2d

>Deep Sinker

Walk under water

>Invert

Flip gravity for yourself alone, we're playing VVVVV now (also a 2d game).

>High Jump

Exactly what it sounds like, except you can use it an unlimited number of times consecutively.

>Zangetsuo

Not really an ability, just a plot item to attack something specific

>Accelerator

Go fast. Notable for being the only traversal item you keep in NG+. Not actually necessary at the point you get it

>Dimension Shift

Teleport about 10 feet past walls. The most 2d of them all.

I'd assume he's talking about games like Shadow Complex, Environmental Station Alpha, or Hollow Knight which are classified as "Metroidvania" despite only taking inspiration from Super Metroid, I don't think any Igavania could reasonably be accused of being a Metroid copy. If you really enjoy SotN's stats or AoS's grinding and farming, I could see how Bloodstained might edge to the top of that subgenre, although that's taking the genre name too seriously in my opinion.

>a bigger castle

>>16624217

>The castle is pretty big

Is it, though? Disregarding the ship on the left and the train area / Den of Behemoths on the right, I'm not sure the castle itself is significantly bigger than those of previous games. If those side areas do count towards the overall map size, I'm fairly confident that the sum of all of Order of Ecclesia's maps is way larger.

While true, there are some points I feel need to be made. I'll sage since I'm late to the thread and the post is already off topic.

Like this anon >>16621993 said, they're starting to move from outright hating old shit to "embracing" it for a quick buck to get you to buy the rom (in some cases obtained from the internet they wish to scrub them from), remaster, remake with soulless updated graphics and changes to the original content (like shoehorning in diversity where there was none or removing jokes because current year), or complete reboots/"long awaited sequels" that just rape the corpse of the dead franchise with all of the above changes and then some.

BOTW was actually pretty shitty as a Zelda game even if it had a great engine. Hopefully BOTW2 will be everything every anon who hoped for "BOTW engine in a real Zelda game" wants, but we'll see. I also think it's worth saying that while Nintendo may not hate old games, they are still not accepting of vidya preservation with their more aggressive defense of their copyrights (taking down roms constantly, and the whole jewtube thing). They still shit out games that are worse than their predecessors like every other company too.

Finally, your entire copypasta reads like it was written by a faggot redditor or someone who's been gone a really long time. Your console war terms for drones seem outdated, in particular ponies. I've not seen that one here in a long while. And for that autist that asked the previous fag for proof, calling it pasta is not necessarily accusing it of having been literal copypasta, it's an adequate descriptor for any giant post like this that is inviting enough to feasibly become copypasta.

>metroidvania game is a metroid copy with metroidvania genre slapped on it.

SotN made it's own genre, that´s the main difference. Metroid doesn´t have stats and different weapons. The difference seems small, but it does make a huge change in gameplay.

>>16624593

>although that's taking the genre name too seriously in my opinion.

But then how the fuck are you supposed to find similar games? Yes, I could play several other games like Shantae, Guacamelee and Hollow Knight, and they are nice games, but they are NOT what I´m looking for. I want to play something like SOTN, not something like super metroid, even if I do like the later as well.

>I don't think guardedly describing something "serviceable" and then going on to call it "the best Metroidvania by far" really jives

It does, because the game is basically the previous games but better. It does have all the good qualities of the later and considering more content MIGHT be added later for free, then it's a pretty nice game on top of the content already in.

>I'm fairly confident that the sum of all of Order of Ecclesia's maps is way larger.

You have a point here, but the thing is the design of the overall map. The center of Bloodstained map is a bit bigger than SOTN and Aria map. Also, now that I calculate, not quite, OoE is pretty big even with the small areas, because Dracula's castle is pretty small.

>Mighty Number 9

You can argue that conman tried to improve Megaman gameplay by adding a completely new thing that have nothing to do with megaman. The game ended up being mediocre and an actual copy of Gunvolt, and Gunvolt plays better.

>Bloodstained

Bloodstained is pretty much all previous Igavanias tried to be pushed into a single massive game, because they knew that worked and tried to do little to none new things.

The key difference between those two is that the people that gave a shit about them actually wanted the same, regardless of that being good or bad. Iga did a good job in that sense, while Inafune not only fail in delivering a megaman game, but failed at delivering a good game at all. Look at Megaman 11, it´s ugly 2.5D, but people liked it, because people like Megaman.

The reason people liked this game is because people liked SotN.

I did not say anything about the game at all, no idea what you're on about. I have no issue with games that stick to a particular accepted formula nor games that try to innovate. I like both types of games as long as they are fun (to me), have some passion put into them, and don't try to fuck with me politically or philosophically. This tends to not be true of kikestarter games, but there are exceptions. I've not tried this game yet, so I thought I'd skim the thread for some information first instead of wasting my time downloading the whole thing with my shit internet or watching some faggot play it on jewtube and having to skip around while jewtube throttles me down to 10Kbps for using youtube-dl and ViewTube. I quite enjoyed CotM so I imagine this game will be fun as well even if it is a bit lacking in the graphics department. A lot of 3d doujin games aren't great graphically, and still manage to be very fun solid games. So I'm willing to overlook that if the game is actually as good as CotM.

it has energy tanks, back-up energy tanks, missile capacity expansions, super missile capacity expansions, power bomb expansions, different beams and sometimes secret techniques. Sure, you can't switch between different different pieces of armor, unless you count turning various suits on and off, and it doesn't have a Luck stat, but the differences are minimal.

I'm not saying they play the same way, but SotN didn't bring much new to the table.

Look, anon, I love both series with Metroid inching out the lead, they went in slightly different directions, but the core gameplay mechanics remain the same:

>find items

>fight boss

>get mobility item / specific type of door opening item

>backtrack to newly accessible locations for upgrades and new areas

Rotating the screen is absolutely something a 2d game can do. It might be a little difficult for something on an old console, they'd probably be unable to render the spinning so they'd just instantly flip everything. The reason something like VVVVVV doesn't do that is becuase you have to flip so often and so quickly it would be more disorienting and probably a little nauseating.

It's not even pretty good, "mediocre" to "it's garbage" is the only genuinely reasonable range of definitions one can assign to it. In a testament to Igarashi's hack-ness, it's incredibly telling that he had zero involvement in the best of Konami's Metroidvanias. Why in the world was anyone hyped for more of his lazy excrement?

Also really gotta laugh at this claim. Something a lot of Metroidvania fans have desired for a very long time is well-balanced action pacing. Judging from all the complaints about how easy the game is in this thread, it's pretty clear he failed abysmally at that once again. No.

What you do in Metroid is constantly WASTE your time shooting at walls or setting bombs because they are constantly forcing you to look for secret passages. As a result, Samus becomes more like an inspector doing mundane, boring tasks.

Metroid has also been always very forgettable in terms of enemies, environments, bosses, weapons… And Samus has a much more limited range of range of abilities. She isn't just that fun to play with.

I've had fun with Bloodstained so far. Been playing the gog pc-version.

I just reached the fire cavern area. I've been using the flying edge -sword and the arrow & axe throw spells and the Bloodbringer sword familiar. The familiar's been pretty useless, but I'm leveling it for the shits and giggles.

I've been playing the game mostly blind, only time I had to consult a walkthrough was when I didn't know where to go after the twin dragons tower and acquiring the item for the camera.

I like how the flying edge lets me keep my distance from enemies and deal damage while moving around. The sword has good area of attack, sometimes hitting large enemies three times per attack. I've upgraded both True Arrow and Chaser Arrow to lvl9 and both of those deal a nice amount of damage when used from point blank range. Throwing Axe skill has a huge area of attack after upgrading it a couple of times and it deals a decent amount of damage.

The cooking aspect of the game has been ok. I thought that it would have been annoying busy work but so far it doesn't feel like it and the stat bonuses are really useful, but the damn food icons make hungry. I've also tried to do all the quests given by the npcs, some of the early rewards were ok and the quests help progress each other, ex. earlier quest reward could be turned in to progress another line of quests to get better equipment earlier.

I've tried to max my luck since the beginning and most of the game I've had plenty of items, rarely I've lacked anything essential, and now that I acquired a ring that increases item drop rates looks live I'll be overflowing with items and I'll have to start selling them to Dominique and I'll see if the 'Money is Power' passive is any good.

Is there any point to mastering the usable input skills? Does it give any bonus to using the skills or other stats?

>>16636863

My friend has a pirated switch version of the game and it crashes occasionally and the characters looked a bit crude on it. The game looks much better on pc. The two problems I'e had were:

1. Getting the game to run on the correct monitor, it always starts up on my 2nd monitor, but there's a simple trick to do that.

2. Once I went afk for 15+ minutes and my controller disconnected, and once I reconnected my controller, the game didn't recognize it and I was stuck in a menu with a prompt telling me to 'reconnect the controller'. I lost like 10 minutes of progress because of it. I'm using the ps4 controller with DS4Windows.

>>16636909

I dunno. There's a version 1.05 on gog, it's the once I've been playing. Someone ought to upload it.

I have never beaten a Castlevania game. If this is my penance for being a newfag to the series then I guess it's my own damn fault. If I knew what you referred to as a Dracula staircase then I guess I'd have known what's up. I guess it's similar to seeing a dragon bridge in a Souls game. But I don't really recall any other characters speaking to Gebel's innocence other than Miriam. Zangetsu has just been gruff and edgy, the nun has been acting sketchy and the alchemist has been 'muh alfred'. I even figured that that wasn't the real Gebel fight as it was so easy, but I figured after I won I'd get a 'YOU DIDN'T WIN' and Gebel would teleport out.

92a180  No.16638227

>>16638029

Good point I forgot that.

>>16638126

No, that's all fair. There's little indication that would happen. The devs know this isn't something to do lightly since they put a save point right next to his chambers.

It's just not much of a modern "subversion of expectations" since, as other anon said, this has been in other Castlevania games. I haven't played many, but Portrait of Ruin had this as well. I'd argue that similar failure states has been used often enough in vidya for it to be a niche trope.

However I don't consider it a worse design flaw than what made you run into his chamber without caution: The bosses are way too easy. Let's say you did realize you were walking right up to Gebel after fighting tooth and nail just to get that deep into the castle. You'd turn your ass right around and go save after getting that cute ribbon.

I'd also argue a worse design flaw is the castle design is pretty shit. Some parts make sense, but the rest is like squishing a bunch of different pieces of play-doh together. All the areas just bleed into one another forming a hideous mass. The excuse is "lol it's a castle from hell risen from the remains of the alchemy lab, of course its layout makes no sense!" Which I think is a poor excuse on the game's part. I think it's the same case as Dark Souls 2 where they had a bunch of areas with no idea how to fit them together cohesively. So it's not surprising to miss context clues that you're going to fight Gebel since the only real clue is the staircase, where you are on the map (that's probably half full), and the gold trimmings everywhere. Which isn't much to me considering how early you actually reach this part of the castle.

So, even with a Dracula staircase I wasn't planning on fighting Gebel right there. However I also wasn't terribly surprised. I was more annoyed when I did finally "beat" him, left his boss chamber, and quickly darted back in because I forgot to hump the walls only to get my shit kicked in by an optional boss. So I had to go refight him, which was mildly inconvenient.

Until I completed the best Great Sword weapon there was very little any boss could do about getting Heretical Grinder shoved down their throat. Best part is the constant damage frames actually slow them down too. Like when Edgy Snake goes to apply pine resin to his sword, if I get to him when it starts, I can almost double how long the animation takes. Or at least that's what it feels like.

That's because the devs know jackshit about how to develop games on UE4. They should have used sprites since in that case they wouldn't have to put a lot of efforts into optimization of the game and it seems like they barely put any. If the game was developed by a competent dev it would run completely fine even on Switch or other toasters, the graphics looks really nothing special and there are better old looking games that works well even on crappy laptops. Besides it looks like it's a norm for games to run like shit on consoles, looks like no talented programmer wants to work in this shitty industry.

If you played the game, on 1.00 you could not complete all the ultimate weapons, nor complete the enemy list. Completely locking you out of the 100%.

The Rotating area bullshit actually effects more than the clock tower. Hellhound , one of the most powerful attack summons in the game gets fucked hilariously if the camera moves just slightly. For example, The hidden desert, The camera moves there and you end up unable to shoot, use hellhound, 8-bit ghost and you can't teleport in some sections because of the camera.

The current gun nerf is stupid. The Scattershot bullets already did multiple hits and if you used the Victory Gun, you could kill anything in a couple of shots. Now that they nerfed firearms, scattershot, which was already weak is now even weaker.

There were some updates for the switch.

The switch could have run this at 60fps, the issue is that they just used the basic UE4 build tools and did no fine tuning to it. They half assed all versions its just the hardware on other version can overcome the use of the UE4 lego blocks system of building a game. IGA and his Art Play team are having issues cause the did not OPTIMIZE any version and relied on the hardware to make up for their shortcomings.

Now as for the switch updates, that list of things is all things that should have been known about and should have been done BEFORE launch.

They only now are bringing wayforward in to actually work on the CODE. When they brought them in before it was just the ART TEAM to help with art direction.

Is it just me or are katanas slightly overpowered? I think they're supposed to be the jack of all trades but master of none, but their damage/speed ratio is great compared to most of the weapons i tried. And not to mention the rekka move gives you total invincibilty during the whole thing. I basically cheated through my endgame starting from Zangetsu 2 and even Baal by spamming one simple flowchart:

jump>attack>attack>backdash>attack>rekka>backdash>jump>attack>attack repeat until mana is out but they're dead by that point and use rekka after backdashing to get out of some sticky situations.

The game was fun. Finished at %99.40 map coverage because i didn't bother with carpenter and revenant. Maybe i'll do those next. It's a bit short though, and as other anons mentioned most of the progression related shards are required 3 or 4 times during the entire game.

I think the idea was that katanas never get any magic damage, so you always have to overcome a single resistance type. While every other weapon type has multiple damage types, or ways to get it. I am not sure what type of damage the storm move does.

I think another part of why is because the katana moveset is going to be used for Zangetsu. So it has more techniques than the others, and generally better ones.

While I wouldn't go as far as to say it's better then SotN, That game is unbeatable due to Alcard's walk cycle alone.

The ability to play as delicious brown still gets the game a thumbs up.

>criminally unchecked quints

i like the game, so far i find it just a tinny little bit better than SOTN

the reason is becos this game seems to have more movement avilities than SOTN

Alucard could turn into a Wolf but there is only 1 place in the whole castle where that skill is necesary to traverse a hallway

he can turn into a Bat as well, but it's only usefull for cheesing plataforming and reaching the final boss

the Bat can use ecolocation, but it's only used one time

Mist form is just a means to pass though specific road blocks and also becomes another way to cheese the game, especially after the Poison Mist upgrade

same with the rocket jump, i can think of only 1 or 2 places where it's necesary and both of them are optional

ROTN seems to have polished the exploration mechanics i still have to finish the game but so far it looks better than SOTN as far as exploration goes

my only other problem is the music, it's not that it's bad, it's pretty good actually, but while in SOTN the drums and electric guitar where front and center with orchestral instrument suporting from the background, in ROTN the electric guitar and drums take a back seat and let clasical instruments on the front line and it doesn't sound as good

here's how the clock tower or twin dragons tower in this case where you plataform on moving gears while avoiding not-medusa-heads stage sound like in ROTN

both are fast paced goth power metal but ROTN definetly lacks metal

sage for double posting

Anyone else get random freezes on PC? I've had a few happen as soon as my attack lands on a monster/boss; completely random as well, it's forced me to logout of windows since it's near impossible to navigate task manager blindly. Otherwise it's been great so far other than being somewhat buggy (like sliding into water locks your controls so you can't jump out).

The enemy recolors are a bit too obvious and lazy, which bothers me because people have been doing that better for decades now. There are plenty of ways to break the game, and I think most of them require a bit more work than SotN.

b38b60  No.16654200

>>16652715

Yeah I had freezing issues but they stopped (mostly) when I switched to the second save slot or any other than the one you're using.

Overall I liked the game and I'd say it's about on par with Iga's older titles. SOTN is still the best for me, just for the music and consistent environmental design that all comes together to give it an excellent Gothic atmosphere. I replay it every year and I'm always impressed by the background details when I stop and check them out. ROTN starts out with some nice areas and then it gets lazy with cave areas and obvious reused levels. The Den of Behemoths is literally just the garden area but twice as big with larger versions of beginning game enemies, and the final area is just a lame ice cave. For one of the most successful kikestarters of all time you would expect more.

43bf29  No.16654249

>>16654200

I'm not sure if the ending areas are worse than the inverted castle. They definitely don't last as long, and the ice area has a nice backdrop of the all the demons frozen. However, the giant versions of the early enemies are just boring to fight.

IMHO RotN felt a bit underwhelming after CotM, might be a trifle but I feel the later has much more personality - the music is catchier, the bosses have much more interesting attack patterns, it feels more consistent in terms of visuals (admittedly thanks to the self-imposed limitations) and there's no backer bullshit shitting it.

I wish the rest of RotN was of the same quality as Miriam's model.

It's not hard to improve on SOTN seeing how literally all games after SOTN improved SOTN formula. The only thing SOTN have on itself is having more items and looking prettier, but that's because of the hardware. SOTN is far from polished.
