Why does everyone say this game is great? It's average at best.
>outside of the intro at Wolfenstein, the levels are nowhere as near intricate or secret filled
>Piss poor enemy variety, you can dispatch unique ones like the Flamethrowers and Elite Femoids with the Kar-98 quite easily and once you get into the last part of the rocket base and beyond it the game crutches its difficulty on Snipers and guys with the FG-42
>Shoot at it until it dies final boss that has no ranged attack and is a walk in the park to beat
>Grenades have such a short range to the point of uselessness
>Ubersoldats who only use the Venom Gun in the mines
Most of the time when I died, I felt that it was due to bullshit like a one/two hit kill from a sniper or enemy positioned around a blind corner or in a shadowed area that their black/gray uniforms combined with the low poly models makes them hard to see. I'd probably put this game equal with The New Order solely because at least TNO had good visuals, a semi-interesting (albeit cucked) story, and more interesting if more linear levels on average.

and I'm not talking "good visuals" as "duhh duh gwafix is better", RTCW's graphics look nice but TNO had a lot more color to it as well as enemy designs that stood out more from the environment

I like this one because of nostalgia, I played it on my dad's computer. It does feel pretty weak after the intro, but I still beat it and wouldn't mind playing again. I can't say the same about nuWolfenstein. I'd say it's a valuable experience, like Doom 3, Prey, Quake and the rest of that kind.

Mission 3 is really good as well, but of course you need to slog through the dogshit crypts to get there, and everything after that is shades of mediocre. RTCW shares the same core issue as Far Cry, which is that the non-human enemies feel like shit to fight.

What are you smoking OP? All of the maps were good because they were open ended in comparison to modern games. It didn't have shitty post processing effects and annoying filters that made the game an complete eyesore to look at all.
In contrast, the Nu Collosus is a garbage game because it removed all of the things that made Wolfenstein good for shitty cinematics that will be outdated within a few years.

>open ended in comparison to modern games
fuck do you mean open ended? they were corridors with at most maybe 1-3 secrets per map with 1-2 retardedly easy ones and 1 fucking autistically difficult one. The only open-endedness I encountered was being able to open doors that were locked from the side you first found them to go back to areas you already cleared, which there's no fucking point to do. The 1st castle level, sure, but the rest of them were linear slogs and when they did open up, like the Chateau before the last castle level, you still pretty much did everything in order only this time there was a greater chance of you missing an objective

>u didn't play the game duhhh
I did. Like I said, almost every example of "open endedness" there was is either the occasional stealth option, or opening a door that leads back to an area of the map you already cleared. Even if the missions were "open ended" the gameplay was still on par with Wolf3D in terms of limited options, but with even worse enemy variety. No enemies outside of the Ubersoldat, Paratroopers, and Sniper forced you to change your playstyle and the latter two only did because they had fucking powerful weapons which forced you to try and get the first hit in. The Ubersoldats were just bullet sponges that you just had to either dodge rockets and Kar-98 to death or exploit their AI in the tighter maps because their venom gun could shred your health in an instant. Outside of that, the Undead were a cancer to fight unless you had a flamethrower and every other enemy in the game was not only forgettable but laughably easy to dispatch hard difficulty.

It commonly comes with a copy of WOLF3D.exe.
Otherwise, it seems like a nice techdemo for idtech. There's a few problems with the game; the stealth sections are far too precise to the point of annoyance sometimes. Difficulty settings barely matter, the only difference that is notable are the healing items. I feel like the ps2 version of the game is the best version because it has RPG mechanics and extra secrets that work with that. (seriously it's lame that gold is useless in the PC version), also the silenced sten sounds amazing on ps2 compression.
41ca8f No.16617450
the lab levels are really dogshit admittedly, and the tesla gun leaves a lot to be desired. The Soyfenstein nowadays really make it seem much better than it once was though, mostly because it has a story and cutscenes that can be skipped without missing out on that much; as in, you can mostly infer from the intro screen what's going down without paying much attention

One thing I find mindblowing these days is that this game came out less than a decade after Wolf3d. Gaming progress has certainly stopped, we're a decade from Wolfenstein 2009 and while graphics are expected to slow down due to diminishing returns, gameplay has regressed.

there isn't really much to progress for fps games tho
you only need a 3d environment, a gun and a crosshair and that's pretty much it
idtech3 engine was peak physics, there is literally nothing you can do to improve upon, the only thing that fps have progressed on (while simultaneously regressed in gameplay) is graphics and animations that do nothing than lag gameplay, introduce noise and bloat game size

We've kind of seen it all. You have enemies that have hitscan weapons, ones that have projectiles and ones that require them to get close. You put all three of these types in a room, depending on the positioning, the hitscan one is top priority as they deal guaranteed damage. What more can be done with level design that DOOM didn't already do? Or Serious Sam? Lots of secrets, lots of verticality, platforming, cover etc. Weapons are another tough one. We have a bunch of hitscan guns, usually based or inspired by real life guns and then some of the more gimmicky guns, usually alien or demon ones. Again, what more can really be done with them?

Define ages, and then I'll post a bunch of decent FPS from that period, and then you'll act like a woman and roll out the most trivial and subjective of nitpicks so you can virtue signal how pure your taste is, and then we'll both walk away with nothing having been accomplished. Because shit has to be "narrative" now. Old games could have twisty mazes that make no sense in real life, as long as it was fun to play we'd accept that. But now locations have to be real-ish, and that can restrict a designer's imagination horribly.
