I just got around to playing this. I've been putting it off because my video card was too loud, but now it's on water so I can actually enjoy the game without obnoxious fan noise.

What are your thoughts on it, /v/? Will give mine in following post.

Shiet, that's cool.

I've only played through the first open area in the game, I like it so far but I've dropped in favor of other games.

So far it's pretty nice to look at aside from some muddy textures here and there. RTX seems to make lighting more accurate with proper darkness/shadows where it's supposed to be, but you still see lights that shine through objects and specular on plenty of surfaces which should be occluded so if they actually wanted more accurate lighting they've only achieved that to an extent. With settings maxed the framerate is fine at 1440p running mostly well over 60fps on an RTX2080 Ti

Seems kinda dumb to have your wife in danger all the time, but also dumb to leave her on a train with a bunch of men. It's a no-win there. I may have fucked up the Church bit because I started knifing people after I was told to avoid killing. Some of the cultists don't attack me though, they just get bitchy if I turn on a flashlight. It's weird that they supposedly shun technology yet I saw three of them standing under a canopy with wires across it intended to conduct electricity away from the occupants as one of those ball lightening demons circled around them the electricity arched around them now how is that not technology? I find that they're feeding people to a giant fish so I killed it. In a locked room I found a corpse with wires running into it. I didn't read or listen enough to know wtf that was about, but I could flip a switch and watch it spasm from the current. Afterward I could take a battery out of the corpse and upgrade my flashlight with it.

[WEBM-Related] My current mission is to steal a boat and I wanted to do a non-lethal stealth run, but there's a faggot (supposedly on my team) who stands atop a crane and keeps shooting enemies that are far away from me and as far as I know haven't spotted me. He alerts them and fucks my stealth run. I also noticed that right after I hit a checkpoint he opens fire on them too, but I don't know how he's being triggered otherwise.

>raytracing meme

The tech has existed for fucking ages, yet when Nvidia started pushing it suddenly it's "just a meme". Raytracing objectively provides a more accurate rendition of lighting, shadows, reflections, even audio can be raytraced. The tech was obviously not ready since you need a ridiculously expensive card to run it well, but it doesn't make it does have genuine merit. Once it is more widely available people will concede that merit. It's popular to hate it now because when it is done properly the performance hit is big and the power required to run it is expensive. You cannot cull as many objects to save performance because even off-screen shit has to be sampled for raytracing so obviously that's going to cause a performance hit.

The current implementations in modern games are raytraced shadows (Tomb Raider), raytraced global illumination (Metro), and raytraced reflections (Battlefield), but never all at the same time. To do them all at the same time they had to take a 22 year old game, Quake II, and give it an RTX makeover. Image 1 is an example of a raytraced shadow. Notice that it is sharper the closer the object is to a surface and more blurred the farther the object is from a surface. Image 2 is an example of raytraced global illumination and reflections. The rough metal provides a reflection of the nearby wall and sky. The blue of the sky is being bounced around so you wind up with blueish shadows. The geometry and textures of the game are not immensely taxing so the ratracing performance hit doesn't matter as much.

If you hit guards they realize it due to the many interaction scripts they have.

You can stealth all of it quite easily. Same with the church.

The Karma system is just as weird as in the previous ones. In my first run I didn't shot anyone, but punched fisherman and merchants and it yielded a bad karma.

In my second I slaughtered every bandit on the map but went full stealth (not seen, no interaction) with the fishermen/guards/merchants and got good karma.

It's really a "don't harm good people" game rather than "killing = bad", non-lethal takedown seem to count as a bad thing (as yeah, ok punching people that didn't do anything to you isn't exactly a good thing).

Even if no one saw me do it they all just immediately know? Video game logic.

The game has an issue wherein the color black doesn't exist. Any area that should be black is gray. It's like they turned contrast down after play testers said they didn't see an enemy to make sure you could see anything in the dark even at night. ReShade doesn't work on DX12 so the only way I can fix this is to go into my display settings and turn down gamma since the in-game gamma setting doesn't get rid of the "black is gray" effect.

One of the more obvious effects of global illumination in this game, aside from generally making areas that should be in shadows rendered as such, is light bounces from snow. When you're in a snowy area the underside of objects gets illuminated from light bounces off the snow.

I played it recently and I'd say I liked it

The atmosphere and exploration are top notch but in general the game feels somewhat held back a by the narrative, it helps that said narrative is enjoyable if a bit melodramatic.

The game is a its best when you're exploring, scavenging and scrambling for resources, the Volga chapter reminded me of Stalker and the Caspian Desert of Far Cry 2, incidentally these are the best chapters in the game because everything else afterwards doesn't reach those heights. If you blink you might miss the bit in Yamantau, the Taiga has its moments but its held back by the narrative creating a false sense of urgency and the Dead City feels overwhelming because its trying to wrap everything fast.

One the subject of the dead city, I was mad about the game not using supernatural elements like in the previous games, apparently ghosts only exist in the metro for some reason, so when you get to the final chapter the devs got reminded about the supernatural and front load you with everything, it lacks subtlety.

Lastly, with radiation being fairy dust like in Stalker and with supernatural elements at hand they could've been a bit more creative with the mutants. Most of them are reskins of previous enemies and the "new" ones are fucking zombies that exist only to hit your resources.

The biggest issue the game had for me was the lack of metro's. I love the metro games because of the spooky atmosphere and the creepy creatures. Going outside and knowing that you're fucked if you linger for too long depending on your difficulty was also very nice. But then exodus comes in and everything gets blown out of the water, no supernatural shit just demons, people and creatures. The dead city was a really nice aspect but like you said, it lacked subtlety and honestly was too short. Give me more metros for fuck sake. There should be more games that have you underground for the majority of the game.

Ansel can take "super resolution" screenshots (higher res than what you are playing at) and fix the contrast with some filters, but some screen effects like electricity don't get captured correctly for super resolution screenshots so I stopped using them.

I didn't capture any on/off RTX comparisons until recently. I made it to the desert just now and did shots of this interior and the difference is significant. The desert seems like a weird place for a Metro game as I'm getting Mad Max vibes here.

Without RTX the room appears reddish for some reason. With RTX light bounces off the sand and makes the room less reddish and more yellowish like the color of the sand which is bouncing the light.

>>16608138

You can see extra depth added to the shadows in the room via raytraced global illumination, even the train outside is getting better lighting. Through the window there's a barrel on the side of the train that looks almost completely flat without RTGI.

4ee4f5  No.16610353

It has raytraced global illumination, which illuminates areas that otherwise wouldn't receive proper lighting, by bouncing light off of surfaces. It has raytraced ambient occlusion which creates more depth within shadows, again by using bounced lighting, but there doesn't seem to be any global illumination or ambient occlusion with RTX off thus the comparison isn't fair because it shows the effects on/off rather than the effects (as performed through traditional trickery) versus the RTX version of those same effects. Realtime raytracing is objectively more accurate than the old methods, but you're not seeing that from just turning an effect on or off entirely as you're comparing it to nothing at all.
