i haven't played twilight princess in forever and i remember almost nothing about it's plot, but wasn't she the ruler in that game? i don't recall the king being alive. the king suicides himself at the end of wind waker, making zelda/tetra the queen (if there technically isn't anything to rule over anymore). he certainly was dead in breath of the wild, but the game still internally neglected to acknowledge that she was the queen at that point. this isn't even a female empowerment thing, i really don't care about that, it's mostly an autistic nitpick. the game is being technically inaccurate when it has no reason, almost like they go out of their way to do it just because fuck you.

Progression between a princess and a queen isn't always clear, and often depends on a lot of specific rules from the kingdom in question. Kingdoms have been run by princes before, and the current Queen of England's husband is Prince Phillip, who will never be considered a King due to common law specifics.
It's not "inaccurate" if you have the slightest bit of knowledge in kingdom politics and titles. I'm not saying they make sense, but the kingdom being run by princess Zelda could be totally accurate, especially if the king had recently died; she wouldn't be queen until she had a formal coronation, which might not have happened due to a present conflict, or if the king wasn't actually dead yet, but ill or held captive. Perhaps she has an older brother that is never mentioned because he is in another region, so even though she is the acting ruler, she can't be queened.
A king dying doesn't automatically make the next of kin a king or queen. There's more bureaucracy involved than that, especially if you have a church involved (and almost every kingdom did and does).

I think Hyrulean queens have less power than the princess. The princess is the literal incarnation of the Godess Hylia. A title of queen can be reserved for a non-Hylia marrying into the family. It could be the same with prince being a Hylia descendent. As a king could be a descendent or not depending on his blood lineage. It also wouldn't surprise me if the king is commander-in-chief of the Hylian Knights given that pleanty of games end implying Link gets the girl. It's also often implied that Link is always either related to or descending from the Hylian Knight bloodline, which are descendents of the Skyloft knights. Pretty sure a descendent of Groose counts as a Hylian knight. He deserves a knighting after becoming a key protector to the Temple of Time.

Why would Nintendo care when almost every Zelda game shows the kingdom failing at it's one god damn job: to protect the citizens of Hyrule from the ancient evil that curse it relying on Link ex Machina to succeed. Breath of the Wild is an excellent example of life without the kingdom. Everyone in villages adapts to their lives outside of the kingdom's authoritative rule.
