V on DS also has an English script slapped with completely unnecessary editing in the form of culturization, which someone at Square doesn't seem to realize that accents work best with actual voicing, instead of just being liable to cause legibility issues with text only games.

I prefer the PS2 version of 5. There's nothing wrong with starting at DQ1, by the way. The game is solid and a good starting point. 6 is alright. Avoid 7.

All the DS games have fucking awful official translations, especially 4 and 5. 4's being near unplayably bad and 5 just being liquid ass. One extra character and a small dungeon are not worth that, play the PS2 version of 5 unless you have no other choice.

Dragon Quest tends to separate into trilogies:

1 + 2 on SNES (do NOT stay at the cursed inn a second time in 2 or you will softlock)

3 on SNES or GBC (very slight split on content. Prefer SNES)

4 DS or NES original (DS version adds a post game where you can redeem the villain but the localization suffers from some faggot localization director thinking that the only reason 8 sold was the funny accents)

5 on PS2 (the DS version's extra romance is a rich bitch thot)

6 on SNES or DS (DS has a good localization, though I disagree with the localized names)

7 on PS1 (DS version added monsters on the map but killed the aesthetic and gave you combat encounters on the first island, ruining the strongest message of the game (until you start your adventure proper, you are safe))

Aside from a lower resolution (not so bad if you're playing on real hardware), there's the issue with Jessica's outfits being altered to fit into CERO A's rating and not changed back for ESRB Teen. These alterations range from minimal to lateral to drastic/bad coverups. The Dangerous Bustier and Magic Bikini long sarong are the worst off. There are hacks where people place back in the older models from the PS2 original, though.

I have Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 on NES and Gameboy. Also Monsters 1. I didn't get 8 until we got a PS2 second hand. I wanted to get 9 but then college life hit hard until I droped out due to mother's failing health. Got lucky finding Swords for Wii. Start with the super famicom remakes of DQ1-3, you get a great experience seeing the mechanical evolution of the JRPG genre.

DQVI unfortunately the official english release is your best bet, there is no clean up patch for it and the fan patch for the SFC version of VI never got fully finished.
