I tried Gears of War a long time ago, but was bored to death by it. Run to cover, shoot, run to cover, shoot. Vanquish, despite being hyped to hell and back, had the same problem. You could do fun things out of cover, but had to repeatedly and constantly rush back into cover to recover your energy. Cover shooters just bore the fucking shit out of me. In Asscreed Black Flag the pirate shit was fun, but the stealth shit was boring trailing missions. A game can have fun things in it, but if the primary thing you're doing is cover shooting or trailing missions it gets boring as fuck.

The fun things for me in Gears 1 and 2 was always getting the good weapons and being able to annihilate fags in cover, I guess being shitty at dealing with cover most of the time makes that sweeter. Obviously co-op helps because you can have a non retarded teammate to help you flank. Multiplayer was always a shitshow filled with terrible netcode and host advantage though.

It was always shit. I recently played through Gears 1 Ultimate edition, and even on insane difficulty it was a piss easy walk in the park. I remember playing it with a friend on the 360 and having to struggle a bit to get through it on the harder difficulties. Turns out, it only seemed that way because controllers are shit inputs and the entire game was built around being one giant concession to garbage inputs. Replace them with something functional, and it breaks the game.
You always hear aiming being brought up as the main advantage of using mouse & keyboard, and while that's largely true, not enough credit is given to enhanced mobility. Being able to snap the camera 90-180 degrees and rolling/running away from danger is a huge advantage in a game where it expects you to just hunker down into cover and play whack a mole. Whereas a game like Vanquish only gets better with mouse and keyboard to take advantage of the enhanced mobility - Gears just falls apart. The one enemy in the game which was designed specifically to harass the player by pressing the attack and getting behind your cover are reduced to a joke. I remember them seeming to come from every direction and being a pain in the ass, especially the exploding ones… but in Ultimate Edition, I'd have them cleared out almost as soon as they'd spawn even while already engaged in other firefights, and there was only ever a handful of them at a time. Boomers were another joke enemy that used to be a threat, being able to soak up damage while they flank your position - expecting you to waste a ton of time fighting other Locust so they could get into position. Almost as soon as they'd spawn, they'd be down since it only takes a few longshot rounds to the head which you can pop off in fairly rapid succession if you're on it with the active reloads.
And the Beserker… holy shit, I didn't even know I'd killed it during the final encounter on the train. I was trying to lure it to the back so I could stun it with a explosion then detach the rail car. But as I come looping around the cargo on the ass end, it follows me and apparently charged right over the side and I didn't notice until the objective updated.
