Why are turn based and ATB combat systems so damn hated? You can watch the footage and seem, when the player shoots as Barret he's gaining the ATB bonus meter gain and when the AI is when the player's controlling cloud Barret isn't getting it.

No because you couldn't, there's a finite resource of MP you have before you chug down ether for more, but having a move like a ranged strike in thunder or a spell fire to have something to do at a range with other characters, pace wise it is faster because you never have to just walk up to someone to fight you can use magic while closing the distance so even if it's considerably weaker it keeps the player with something to do with the combat and more then mash attack and guard until the ATB is filled so they can have the game do something else for them for a second.

Except even under powered they're a ranged attacks on characters who normally are majority close range, just taking from the MP meter means it's an option you always have on hand over wow I want to use fire, better mash attack 8 times so I can have 1ATB meter to cast a singular fire that automatically just hits the target.

This just makes it less engaging when it was turn based because then you had full control of attack/spend meter because ATB was a glorified turn order mechanic not an actual functioning meter that's used as a resource for moves.

My greatest problem with that game is that the movement its self is boring. Most of the game you find yourself airdashing around. Yet this thing in its self is very boring. No teleporting movement, no fast falling, no momentum based movement, no character that moves faster on the ground, no wall jumping, no attacks that double as movement options (Jump [the skill] would easily fit this), and no movement options upon waking up from knockdown. I would rather have the Trails in the Sky speed system than ATB. That combat is based around delaying enemy turns or managing how much delay your attacks do to line up attacks. Also, on certain turns, random things happen like HP regen, MP regen, automatic critical hit, etc. So not only does the turn order matter, but what turn you take matters too.

ATB would work better if there were actions that sped up or slowed down your or the enemy's ATB gauge besides slow, disable, haste, berserk and stop. You could even make it momentum based where chaining weaknesses, crits, and satisfying various other conditions makes your ATB and limit raise faster. The more I look into FF gameplay, the more lacking it comes off.
