are there any games you've used save states on and didn't feel bad? i'm playing through zelda 2 with save states and i don't feel a shred of shame. all it would have taken for this game to feel fairly difficult rather than artificially difficult is for you to start the game from the last town you visited. there's so much bullshit you have to travel through, and so many enemies where you're basically required to take some amount of mandatory damage.

Yeah, basically that. If the game is bullshit, or has a lot of punishing segments for no reason, I'll do it

When you're a kid grinding out a game with a friend is fun, and making it through that tricky level when you've used up all your continues is exhilarating. When you're an adult drinking alone in a darkened room, save states aren't that big of a sin.

Well put anon.
I would also add that time is a factor. When I was a kid it wasn't any big deal for me to start a game over, especially since I didn't have a backlog and games were expensive. Nowadays I COULD play through an entire segment again just to get to the part where I made a misstep, but I ain't got time for that.

I mostly use save states in games like saga frontier where learning a skill or getting a item is complete rng with a very low chance of success. Even with save states it takes forever but it just takes a little less time between each attempt since you dont have to constnatly fucking reset the game. Its a godsend especially for learning monster moves

Final SA-X chase in Metroid Fusion. Specifically since you can just plain land on it's head dropping into the room and eat an assload of damage before the chase even starts. And while you can hear it pacing beforehand, you don't exactly get to use it as an indication of which way it's moving (or so I recall). Die, and it's either another jaunt through wasp hell: reactor edition, or another trek back from your ship if you backtracked to save somewhere safer after Yakuza.
If it helps, I have beaten the game on an actual cartridge before, and thus without access to save states. I just don't like that slog on emulated replays.

I use savestates to save a game in the moment I finished before going to sleep or doing something else.
I use savestates to learn confusing game mechanics and check out things like falling into an obvious death hole to check wether or not there is a secret down there.
I also use savestates to skip unnecessary screens, like an unskipable cutscene before a boss, or put them at the beginning of the stage to use instead killing myself to continue the stage with full lives.
I think those are fair.

I once used save states to play through resident evil 3. I only used them in safe rooms because it served the exact same function as using ink ribbons, but was faster. I fucked up when I was in the clock tower and accidentally saved the state instead of loading, right after dying, and I'd only been using one save slot like a retard instead of cycling through several. It pissed me off so much that to this day I've still never completed the game.

Wait for it to be in the middle of the room, drop down, ice missile it, run past and hold your gun diagonally upwards as you go through the door, shoot like a motherfuck to hit the beacons to open the gates, don't suck at the small platforming, get into the next room, SA-X dealt with.

I really want to avoid using save states, but old games were hard because they had little content. If they were much easier or at least allowed saving, they would have been immensely shorter so people would feel ripped off.
At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter either way. No one gives a shit one way or the other.

Other way around. They didn't need a lot of content because many most of them followed arcade design philosophy. Unfortunately, that arcade philosophy was based entirely on how hard you could bullshit kids out of their quarters without them fucking off and never touching your machine again. In that way they were proto-p2w microtransaction vehicles. Of course, you can't put quarters into your console, so much like a P2W game with the microtransactions ripped out, you're probably going to be left with a pretty rough game, and that's exactly what many of those gen 3-4 platformers were.
Some anons get really upset when this comparison is brought up.

THIS. I did the same sort of thing. Almost every PS1 or PS2 game I emulated, have a save state just on the title screen so I can start the game up and play the actual game without having to sit through two minutes of logos.
In terms of actually save scumming a game: Unlimited SaGa. I actually have finished it twice legitimately on a real PS2. The game is an underrated gem and a lot of fun once you understand the poorly-explained mechanics. But fuck playing the entire thing through SEVEN TIMES without a fast forward button and a quicksave option, especially with how much of the game is random.

I use them in Metroid games to avoid having to reset a room via leaving and reentering if I fuck up some of the harder jumps. Don't really care at all about this since it just saves me like 10 seconds of reset and reposition. Sometimes before bosses but that's rarely. I should stop this though. Otherwise I don't use them, though if I ever need to quit suddenly and am not near a save point I'd be willing to do it then, just hasn't been a problem for me.
