I really want to like Yooka Laylee, but I just can't. There's something fundamentally missing from it. It doesn't only fail to evolve the formula at all compared to what we had in 1990s, but they actually took it backwards and simplified it some ways. A hat in time does a somewhat better job, but that's shit in different ways.
It really doesn't seem like such a difficult genre to make a decent game in, why does it seem so hard?

I knew it was gonna be the case the moment it was shown because of one simple reason - Unity. Could have been Unreal as well and it would have been the same exact deal. Kirkhope has gone on record talking about Project Dream having an elaborate, advanced 3D engine where you could freely manipulate terrain, being something highly advanced for the time. They had to scale that down because the N64 couldn't run it. It says a lot that they went from having that type of ambition to using Unity.

It shipped with a bug that let you throw a random object on top of your car and physgun it you can sequence break the entire game, crates that were locked behind barriers that were supposed to be completely impassible could be collected simply by flipping the cart on it's side and pulling the crate close enough to be in the tray of the cart and fast traveling. Music note pickups are physobjects UNLESS touched directly by the Banjo's hitbox (or the vehicle with the player in it)
You could crash the game by putting ~50% of the notes in a level in one of the container parts for the vehicles and then getting in it.
I think it's a safe bet it was an afterthought.
