That's partially the case. Adulthood is a terminal state for most insects, exceptions being some of the primitive insects that don't have a really strict line between their juvenile and adult stages and trilobite beetles which can go through reverse puberty.
Cicada actually have a relatively long adult lifespan. They can last for several months. Ine of the big reasons they die quickly is because of the fucking yellowjackets and hornets.

Infested Planet was a pretty good Starship Troopers (the movie) themed mass bug slaughter real time tactics game. I liked it but it wasn't very complex. The bugs mutate whenever you kill a hive, and some of the mutations are a real pain in the ass, but that's about it.
