There was sort of a sandnigger trade center town in the Vanguard MMO that almost touched on the whole "famed empire is actually just a shadow of its former self after a degenerate theocracy came in and fucked everything up" part but was too busy being more about trans-dimensional furry skinwalkers.

That's about all there is to it. There's three furry races, dog people, little fox dudes and lion/tiger people. The dogs are standard native american standins but if you read the quest text they have all kinds of fucked up backstory involving necromancy and kindnapping people in the night to do experiments on them. The fox dudes are just little fox dudes but nobody really trusts them and they get called "alien" a lot. It doesn't really start to make sense until you play the lion people where their introduction sequence is you inside of pretty much the final level of Contra fighting twitchy blob monsters and losing so you have to abandon your space Aztec temple by going through a portal that takes you to notCarthage. It's then sort of heavily implied, or maybe even outright stated later on, that all three furry races have the same sort of origin, with the dog people just being around the longest. Kind of neat lore wasted on a complete mess of a game I'm afraid.
